WASHINGTON (AP) -- The president got what you might call a grassroots display of support at the White House, welcoming an 11-year-old Virginia boy who offered to help cut the lawn.President Donald Trump high-fived Frank Giaccio, who lives in the Washington suburb of Falls Church. The White House says Frank wrote Trump to say he admires the president's business acumen and runs his own neighborhood lawn-care business.Frank was so focused on pushing the lawn mower, he didn't notice Trump had emerged to greet him until the president was next to him in the Rose Garden.Trump says Frank is "the future of the country" and will soon be "very famous."Frank said he wants to be a Navy SEAL, to which Trump exclaimed, "He'll make it." 738

WASHINGTON D.C. — A 17-year-old boy was killed and 20 people were shot, including an off-duty police officer, in Washington D.C. early Sunday morning at a large gathering. The victim was identified as 17-year-old Christopher Brown and police say the off-duty 1st District police officer was shot and is in the hospital fighting for her life.Officers said another 17-year-old was shot and the other victims were all adults and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The police chief said there were multiple shooters and at least 11 of the 20 people shot were women. “There was some kind of a dispute,” said Police Chief Peter Newsham, with the Metropolitan Police Department. “Multiple weapons were produced,” he told reporters. He said a motive for the shooting wasn’t clear. The chief also said they would be talking to building management about the gathering and officers will be looking at whether more could be done to break up the group. At this time, officers believe the gathering started late Saturday night and shots were fired just after midnight. "Sadly, some people who have no regard for human life, opened fire," said Mayor Muriel Bowser, reiterating that drinking and using marijuana in the street is illegal in D.C., as is having a gathering of this size. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is rejecting an appeal from environmental groups trying to stop President Donald Trump from building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, even as other legal action against the wall is ongoing. The justices on Monday left in place a ruling by a federal judge in San Diego who rejected challenges claiming that the Trump administration improperly waived laws requiring environmental and other reviews before construction can begin. The judge in the San Diego case was Gonzalo Curiel. Trump criticized Curiel during the presidential campaign for his handling of fraud allegations against now-defunct Trump University. Trump had already proposed a border wall and suggested the Indiana-born judge's Mexican heritage meant he wouldn't be fair to Trump in the fraud lawsuit. 808

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy rebounded at a record pace of 33.1% in the July-September quarter, unchanged from the first estimate a month ago.But a resurgence in the coronavirus is expected to slow growth sharply in the current quarter, with some analysts even raising the specter of a double-dip recession.Last week, the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose to 778,000. That’s up from 748,000 the week before, according to the Department of Labor. The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that the overall increase in the gross domestic product, the country’s total output of goods and services, remained the same as its first estimate although some components were revised.Bigger gains in business investment, housing and exports were offset by downward revisions to state and local government spending, business inventories and consumer spending. The Associated Press found that the 33.1% gain was the largest quarterly gain on record, surpassing the old mark of a 16.7% increase in 1950. 1028
