SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – James Prince, the owner of a recycling center in Point Loma, went to the Peninsula Community Planning Board Thursday night to try and save his business.Prince Recycling is being evicted from his location on the property of the Stump’s Family Market Place.Prince Recycling has become a controversial business in the past one or two years.  It is the only recycling center in the area, but many neighbors have started complaining that it is bringing homeless problems to the area.Dirk Stump, the owner of the grocery store, confirmed he is evicting the recycling center, ending their agreement for the past five years. The area is required to have a recycling center, and Dirk says the state could fine him more than ,000 a year for cutting ties with recycling, but at this point, he is willing to pay, because he says the center is attracting homeless and chasing away customers.  He said Mr. Prince is a good person and it was purely a business decision.“I recycle thousands of tons of material, and it’s not just from homeless,” Prince said.  “Not only that, they’re people too. What am I supposed to do? You’re homeless you can’t come in?” The planning board did not take any action on the issue. Prince says he’s not making any plans to vacate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local, independently owned grocery stores are keeping an eye on a potential grocery worker strike in Southern California. On Monday, UFCW Local 135 will vote to authorize strikes at Albertsons, Vons and Ralphs. Union representatives say employees have been working without a contract since March. Union president, Todd Walters, says they've met 17 times with the companies asking for better wages, health benefits and pensions. In South Park, the owner of a small grocery store says he hopes the bigger retailers don't enter a strike. David Halabo owns Food Bowl Market with his wife. During the last strike in 2003, Halabo says his business saw an increase in customers for specific items like bread, milk and eggs. Halabo says he's keeping an eye on the negotiations, but says he'll only stock up on extra items if the workers do go on strike. The small business owner says, although is business would benefit, he doesn't want to see a strike happen.Ralphs spokesperson John Votava sent 10News a statement from the company, saying:"We are negotiating in good faith with the union for a fair and balanced contract that is good for our associates, as well as our company. As you know, negotiations are about finding compromise, and this can take time. Throughout the negotiations, it's business as usual in our stores and Ralphs is extremely proud of our associates who remain focused on serving our customers, communities and each other."Vons/Albertson's spokesperson Melissa Hill sent this statement as well, saying:"We are committed to working collaboratively with the unions to ensure that we reach an agreement that is fair to our employees, good for our customers and allows Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions to remain competitive in the Southern California market. We feel the strike authorization vote is premature and will cause our employees and customers undue concern; nevertheless, we will be back at the bargaining table on July 10 and hope to reach an agreement soon."The vote doesn't mean employees will go on strike immediately, but it does give the union the ability to call for one at any time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside the 3D Innovations Lab at Rady Children's Hospital, the hearts, bones, skulls, and spines of patients are brought to life in a new way.Justin Ryan, Ph.D. is director of the lab. Using 3D printers, they can replicate a patient's anatomy down to every precise detail, giving doctors critical information before surgery.“The concept is by giving our doctors more information they can perform a better procedure; they can even perform it with less time. So that means less time under bypass, less time under anesthesia, which is great for the patients themselves," said Ryan.For example, if a patient is a candidate for a stent or valve, doctors could use the 3D model to try different sizes before entering the operating room. “We give them more information to plan a better procedure," said Ryan. While some of the models take several hours, many can be created within the day. “There isn’t an average day, I might have a cardiac case in the morning, an ortho case in the evening, I'll have a doctor have an idea for a medical device that they wanted to design or develop, and that all happens here," said Ryan. Ryan says the 3D models are also useful when explaining the procedure to families. The technology is currently being funded by grants and donations, at no extra cost to families. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - IKEA is recalling a type of candy sold at certain stores in California, including the San Diego location in Mission Valley.The Godis P?skkyckling marshmallow candy may be contaminated. The chain did not immediately release the source of the possible contamination but said the health risk is low.IKEA said the candy is a seasonal product and only 400 bags have been sold since it became available in February.If you bought the candy, you may return it to the nearest IKEA store for a full refund. 523

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In a school year where parents and teachers have had to adjust over and over again, teachers are sharing their stories of hope and gratitude with ABC 10News.Dawn Harrison teachers her first grade students virtually from her classroom in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. She hopes one day, she won’t be alone in her class.“I would much prefer to be face to face with my kids and be able to get the hugs… be able to pat their little back or hold their hands,” Harrison said.She knows that is not a reality right now, but thinks about what she is grateful for. She looks forward to monthly distribution days, where she will see colleagues and students for a brief moment when they pick up materials. She is thankful for parents, as she knows this has been difficult for everyone.“They take into consideration my thoughts and feelings, too,” Harrison said. “The parents that have shared with me, they’ve been very thoughtful of taking everybody’s perspective and situations at home.”Harrison has also found an even greater love for another teacher— her husband.“The way he engages [his students], the experiences he’s able to provide for them, it gives me a new appreciation for him,” she said of her husband Rick Meads, a teacher at Eastlake High School.Meads sang his wife’s praises as well. “I’m telling you, the amount of energy that she has to expend for first graders is a whole lot different than what I have to do,” he said. “I don’t know how she does it, but she’s amazing.”Meads is grateful that he is still able to teach, although it is in a format that is new for many educators.“I’m really thankful that we are able to have this opportunity to do this online. If you think about this ten years ago, it would have never happened,” Meads said. ‘I’m not sure what we would have done.”During the summer, elementary school teacher Kelly Martin told ABC 10News that someone described the current situation as a “corona coaster.”With many still on this “corona coaster,” Martin is thankful for her students. “I’m so appreciative of that hard work because three months of this is getting a little draining on some of them,” she said. “I just look forward to finding ways to keep connecting with the students.”As she looks ahead to a new year, Martin said she hopes to “keep it fresh and keep it new, so that the monotony of online learning doesn't drag us down.” 2402
