(KGTV) -- A local business and organization are coming together to take steps toward better protecting Alzheimer patients by providing free gun locks.Alzheimer’s San Diego and Poway Weapons and Gear have started the first of its kind program regarding what to do when it’s time to lock up your guns.Eugenia Welch is the President of Alzheimer’s San Diego and spoke to 10News. "As we were working further through this program, there was an incident locally, a gentleman shot his daughter because he didn’t recognize her as a daughter he thought she was an intruder. Luckily she’s fine but that could have been a really bad situation," she said. When families are helping their loved ones who have been diagnosed, they often forget about the guns in the home and how dangerous they could be. "If someone is retired military or retired police officer, they’ve probably had guns in their home their whole life and didn’t even think about it” Welch says.This program gives free gun locks to families. It started over the summer and so far they have given out 100 locks.Poway Weapons and Gear has donated 500 locks and tells 10News they will continue to donate as need grows.The program hits close to home for the business because the owner’s grandmother was also diagnosed with the disease.With the locks on guns they become completely unusable, preventing the cylinder from going back in with the rounds to allow the gun to be fired.While the ideal situation is for the guns to be completely removed, the organization says this is the next best option. 1610

It shows a customer repeatedly hitting an employee, knocking him to the ground and hitting him again while repeatedly using the "N-word."The employee repeatedly tells the suspect that he's sorry throughout the video.On June 15, Flint Township police were called to the store around 5:45 p.m. Police say a store employee was assaulted by a man while a second man filmed it.Police say they're still gathering evidence. A department statement says police officers were not involved as federal forces repeatedly came out to disperse a crowd that broke a fence and set a fire outside the federal building. President Donald Trump has decried the demonstrations, saying police in Portland had lost control and he deployed federal agents. Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf has blasted the protesters as “lawless anarchists." But city and state officials say they didn't ask for the federal forces to intervene in protests against racial injustice that have gripped Portland for weeks. Portland Mayor Tom Wheeler said Sunday that federal officers are not wanted. Oregon’s attorney general is seeking an order to stop federal agents from arresting people.These statements come after reports that federal forces are driving around in unmarked vehicles and detaining demonstrators.Democratic leaders in the U.S. House are asking for federal inspectors general to investigate federal law enforcement involvement in trying to quell nightly protests in Portland, Oregon, and other cities. (KGTV) - A Poway family is stocking up on resources in case a quarantine is triggered by the coronavirus.As the father, Nate took his love of engineering home to support the family, "we have a big family, and food is expensive, so we’ve always tried to be self reliant."Self reliant means gardens, poultry and fish. They have five kids. Right next to the back deck is a garden at about hip level. “We have kale, we have thyme and parsley. My cilantro grows pretty well here, we have salad greens.” Nate listed off. That particular garden is watered by a fish tank full of a dozen or so Tilapia.Fruit trees dot the backyard. Everything from apricot, apples and nectarines, to cherries, guavas and mulberries grow here.In the opposite side of the yard is a chicken coop. "We have 11 chickens, we get eggs every day. About 7," his wife, Lacy said happily. She said they planned to only grow one more garden this summer but in the last week four more have been constructed and prepared for seeding.In a shed next to the new garden beds, is a stockpile. Under a wood workbench sit brown metal tubs with 'Department of Defense Drinking Water' labels. Nate looked down at his clipboard and read off more supplies, “we have wheat for sprouting. We have about 100lbs. of brown sugar and honey."In the last month they've ramped up gathering supplies."This week we basically went and bought a lot of stuff that we would normally buy in the next few months, but we bought it now in case we can’t go in the next few months." Nate said he is watching national news and concerned a quarantine could come to San Diego.“We just have to take care of each other. There might not be food on the shelves, there might be kids staying home all day from school. We don’t know.” He said.Now they're looking at their backyard in a different way. “We’ve got the pool for washing if we needed it... So this is the drinking water should we need it, we have two generators.”Even their kids are aware and prepared to help. “I got it in case the coronavirus comes here," Shelby, 7, said showing us her medical kit.The family hopes they don't ever have to use their stockpile but are prepared just in case. 2197
