Philadelphia's mayor has apologized after he was photographed dining indoors at an out-of-state restaurant, even though restaurant dining rooms in his remain closed due to the pandemic. In a series of tweets Monday, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney (D) said he understands the frustration some felt when photos surfaced that showed him eating indoors at a friend's restaurant in Maryland."Restaurant owners are among the hardest hit by the pandemic. I'm sorry if my decision hurt those who've worked to keep their businesses going under difficult circumstances. Looking forward to reopening indoor dining soon and visiting my favorite spots." 646

Police in Wisconsin have confirmed two cases of tampered Halloween candy throughout the state. In Arcadia, Wisconsin — a town located near the Wisconsin/Minnesota border — police confirmed that at least one child found needles in multiple pieces of Halloween candy. The needles were not visible until the candy was opened and broken in half. In both instances, the needles appeared to be sewing needles.Police say the incident happened sometime during trick-or-treat hours, between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. They've warned parents in the community to check their children's candy.A few hundred miles away in Neenah, Wisconsin, police reported that nails were found in three pieces of Halloween candy.A spokesman for the Neenah Police Department said that a mother found three Kit Kat candy bars with nails protruding from them in her son's candy stash.Police suspect they can narrow down the house where the boy was given the candy, but did not say they were investigating any suspects. It's the second straight year in which a nail was found in a Neenah trick-or-treater's candy. A child found a nail hidden in a Tootsie Roll in 2016. No arrest was made in that case.Police are encouraging Neenah parents to inspect their children's candy for anything suspcious. Those reports comes just days after police in Randolph, Wisconsin — located about three hours east of Arcadia — say that a child in town received a piece of tampered candy while trick or treating on Saturday.According to police, the child received a Now and Later that appeared to have been soaked in motor oil or some other foreign substance. Police aren't sure where the child received the candy and are asking community members for tips. 1736

Police say a white gunman opened fire at a Kentucky grocery store, killing two African-Americans, after he tried and failed to enter a predominantly black church nearby.Gregory Bush, 51 was indicted on five counts Wednesday, including murder and attempted murder; none of them were hate crime charges, despite comments from authorities that the shootings appear to be racially motivated.CNN has reached out to a public defender for Bush and is waiting to hear back.Prosecutor Tom Wine said that because Kentucky's hate crime statute does not include homicides, Bush was not charged with a hate crime for the deaths."A hate crime designation only occurs when the judge makes such a determination at sentencing. If the judge finds a hate crime designation is appropriate, it doesn't add any additional time. The designation is only useful if the judge wishes to deny probation or the parole board wants to defer parole," Wine said in a statement.Hate crimes are considered more difficult to charge and prosecute than other criminal charges, largely because they require law enforcement to prove a specific motivation of bias.Additionally, federal investigators are looking into potential civil rights violations, including hate crimes, said Russell M. Coleman, the US attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.Bush faces two counts of murder for the shooting deaths of Maurice Stallard, 69, and Vickie Jones, 67, inside the Kroger grocery store in Jeffersontown, and in the parking lot outside, Wine said.Bush is also charged with one count of attempted murder stemming from what authorities described as an exchange of gunfire with an armed civilian. The indictment identifies the armed civilian as Dominic Rozier. Bush is charged with two counts of wanton endangerment for firing shots in the directions of two more people, Kiera Rozier and an unidentified juvenile.Jeffersontown Mayor Bill Dieruf said on Monday that the shooting is being investigated as a hate crime based on the circumstances, including the race of the victims and the defendant.Dieruf said investigators are looking into reports that Bush told a bystander before he was captured that "whites don't shoot whites."Bush remains jailed on five million dollars bond. His next court appearance is Friday, he said. 2340

Patrick Quinn, a co-founder of the popular Ice Bucket Challenge, died at the age of 37.The ALS Association announced the news on social media Sunday.Quinn was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) shortly after his 30th birthday, according to the association. Since his diagnosis, Quinn raised awareness for the disease, co-creating the widely popular Ice Bucket Challenge.ALS posted the following message of Quinn following his passing:"We are deeply sorry to share that Pat Quinn passed away today. Pat was co-founder of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and an inspiration to millions of people around the world.Pat was diagnosed in March of 2013, a month after his 30th birthday. Immediately after he was diagnosed, he decided he wanted to make a difference in the ALS community. Taking a cue from his friend, the late Pete Frates, Pat established his own team of supporters – Quinn for the Win – to raise awareness and funds for the fight against ALS.Pat, who lived in Yonkers, NY, saw the Ice Bucket Challenge on the social media feed of the friends and family of the late Anthony Senerchia, of Pelham, NY, and knew it was the key to raising ALS awareness. He and his Quinn for the Win supporters, along with Pete Frates and his Team Frate Train supporters, turned the challenge into the biggest social media phenomenon in history. The Ice Bucket Challenge went on to raise 5 million for The ALS Association and over 0 million around the world for ALS research. It dramatically accelerated the fight against ALS, leading to new research discoveries, expanded care for people living with ALS, and significant investment from the government in ALS research. In 2015, The ALS Association honored Pat, Pete, and Anthony as “ALS Heroes” at our annual Leadership Conference, an award given to people living with ALS who have had a significant positive impact on the fight against ALS. Anthony passed away in 2017 and Pete passed away in 2019.Following the Ice Bucket Challenge, Pat took advantage of every opportunity he could to raise awareness of ALS, speaking to groups large and small. He raised awareness of the effects of ALS on a person’s voice and the importance of voice banking through “Project Revoice,” which was seen by millions around the world. He continued hosting an Ice Bucket Challenge in his beloved Yonkers every year (“Every August Until a Cure”) and he started a social media campaign encouraging everyone to “FindUrSmile.” He also starred with NFL legend Terry Bradshaw in a television public service announcement that has aired more than 63,000 times nationwide.Pat fought ALS with positivity and bravery and inspired all around him. Those of us who knew him are devastated but grateful for all he did to advance the fight against ALS."Read the full statement here. 2810

Paleontologists have discovered a new species of dinosaur in Asia. The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences says two “perfectly preserved” fossils were found in the Lujiatun Beds in the Liaoning Province of northeastern China. The intact fossils suggest that the burrowing dinosaurs were trapped by a volcanic eruption while resting at the bottom of their burrows, according to the institute. Some paleontologists believe the dinosaurs were victims of a gigantic volcanic eruption."These animals were quickly covered by fine sediment while they were still alive or just after their death," said paleontologist Pascal GodefroitThe institute says the Lujiatun Beds would have been a kind of Cretaceous “Pompeii.”Fittingly, the new species has been named Changmiania liaoningensis, with Changmian meaning “eternal sleep” in Chinese.Paleontologists estimate these newly discovered dinosaurs roamed the earth about 125 million years ago.The institute says they were small, herbivorous, bipedal dinosaurs, about 1.2 meters long. With very powerful hind legs and long, stiff tail, paleontologists believe they were particularly fast runners.“However, certain characteristics of the skeleton suggest that Changmiania could dig burrows, much like rabbits do today,” said Godefroit. “Its neck and forearms are very short but robust, its shoulder blades are characteristic of burrowing vertebrates and the top of its snout is shaped like a shovel. So, we believe that both Changmiania specimens were trapped by the volcanic eruption when they were resting at the bottom of their burrows 125 million years ago.” 1612
