It adds to happiness of the anniversary of the People's Republic, and it brings the Expo 2010 Shanghai event to a new height. At the outset, I wish to extend, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, warm welcome and sincere thanks to all distinguished guests attending the China National Pavilion Day events.Expo 2010 Shanghai is the first such global event hosted by a developing country in the history of the world expo. In the past five months, participants from 246 countries and international organizations have gathered by the Huangpu River to attend the Expo. The Expo site has hosted over 100 foreign leaders and nearly 60 million Chinese and foreign visitors. Together with the over two million dedicated volunteers from home and abroad, they have made "Better City, Better Life" a living reality. In the less than six square kilometer Expo Park, pavilions of diverse styles bearing distinct features of different countries stand alongside each other, hosting creative exhibitions and various cultural performances, not to mention the unique Urban Best Practices Area and the inspiring forum dialogues. Together, they form a vivid picture of the diverse world and the harmonious co-existence of different cultures and civilizations. We have every reason to believe that, with concerted efforts of all sides, Expo 2010 Shanghai will surely be a successful, splendid and unforgettable event. Let me take this opportunity to express sincere gratitude to the governments and peoples of other countries, to the International Exhibitions Bureau and relevant international organizations, to all participants for their great support for the Expo and to all friends who have contributed their share to the Expo.Ladies and Gentlemen,Friends,Standing proudly in the Expo Park, the splendid and magnificent China Pavilion, the "Oriental Crown", is a showcase of "Chinese Wisdom in Urban Development". It is living proof of the effort by the Chinese people in pursuit of a better life. It gives expression to the long-lasting belief in harmony as rooted in the Chinese culture and to the vision of a brighter future of China through scientific development.The Chinese nation has a long history and a splendid culture. For over 5,000 years, generation after generation of the Chinese people of different ethnic groups have lived on this vast land. They have formed a fine character of diligence, courage and self-reliance. They are open-minded and inclusive. They dare to innovate and explore new ways of development. The contribution they have made to the progress of human civilization is significant and indelible.Over the past 60 years or more since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Communist Party of China has led the Chinese people of all ethnic groups in an earth-shaking and pioneering endeavor and succeeded in bringing about three historic shifts: the shift from a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society to a new society of national independence, where people are the masters of their own country; the shift from a new democratic revolution to a socialist revolution and development; and the shift from a highly centralized planned economy to a robust socialist market economy and from a closed or semi-closed state to one of all-round opening up. These are indeed epoch-making changes of the Chinese nation. In the past 30 years since the beginning of reform and opening-up, China's economy has maintained rapid growth rarely seen in the world. Our social programs have made progress. Our comprehensive national strength has increased significantly. Our people, on the whole, are leading a life of moderate prosperity, with the outlook of rural and urban areas steadily improving. We enjoy unity and amity among all our ethnic groups, harmony and stability in our society and continued rise in our international standing. China, once an ancient land, is taking on new vigor and vitality.Looking ahead, we will build a moderately prosperous society at a higher level by 2020 to benefit our over one billion people, and will realize modernization by the middle of this century. This is the grand vision and abiding goal of the Chinese people from generation to generation.The Chinese people, once plagued by poverty and hunger, long all the more for a life of prosperity and peace. DALIAN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday called on the young in Russia and China to pass on the friendship forged during World War II.Medvedev made the call in a meeting Sunday morning with more than 20 veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), part of WWII.The Russian leader, who arrived in the northeast China's port city of Dalian Sunday morning, first laid flowers at a monument commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs.In the following meeting with Chinese and Russian veterans, Medvedev said Russians and Chinese forged profound friendship in their joint fight against the Nazis, and such friendship constituted the solid foundation for the relationship between the two countries.The Russian President thanked Russian and Chinese veterans for their contributions to peace.He also thanked China for renovating the memorial, which was one of more than 70 memorials commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs throughout China. All those memorials had been refurbished to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory of WWII.Dalian was the first stop of Medvedev's three-day visit to China. This was also Medvedev's second state visit to the country since he assumed presidency in May 2008.Later Sunday, Medvedev flew to Beijing to continue his state visit to China.During his stay in Beijing, Medvedev will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and call on other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.Medvedev will also travel to east China's metropolis of Shanghai, where, on the next day, he will meet with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and attend events marking the Russia Day at the ongoing World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.

BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- China and Ukraine have agreed to boost economic and parliamentary cooperation after their leaders met in Beijing.Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao met with visiting Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych Friday."The pressing task is to identify major projects for cooperation and give full play to business, research and financial institutes," said Wen.Wu Bangguo (R), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, meets with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich (L) in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 3, 2010."By doing so, we will make headway in economic and technological cooperation and promote economic recovery and sustainable growth," he said.Yanukovych said his country hopes to fully utilize the cooperation committee at the vice-premier level they agreed upon to establish advanced cooperation in various fields.During his meeting with Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), Yanukovych discussed parliamentary exchange between the two countries."The documents signed between the two countries, including the joint statement, show the political willingness to boost parliamentary exchange," Yanukovych said.China hopes to enhance communication between parliamentary leaders and committees in legislature, supervision, trade and culture, Wu said.Yanukovych praised China's efforts maintaining reform, development and stability, saying his country looks forward to further discussions with China on governance.Yanukovych arrived in Beijing Thursday for a four-day state visit and has so far witnessed the signing of a joint statement to upgrade friendly cooperative relations in a comprehensive way.According to an agreement signed by the two sides, Chinese companies will undertake the construction of a 950-million-U.S.-dollar city rail line in Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine.Yanukovych will fly to Shanghai Saturday to attend the 2010 World Expo.

BRASILIA, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim, Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie arrived on Tuesday in the Brazilian Air Base to begin a goodwill visit to the South American country.In a written speech released upon his arrival, Liang, also Chinese state councilor, offered his sincere greetings and good wishes to the Brazilian people and armed forces on behalf of the Chinese Ministry of National Defense and the Chinese People's Liberation Army.Liang said the aim of his visit is to strengthen mutual understanding between the two armies, deepen friendship, promote cooperation, and explore more areas for cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries.Liang said that China is keen to develop bilateral relations of the armies, to deepen military cooperation with Brazilian side, to promote relations between the two countries, and devote their due contributions to safeguarding international and regional stability and safety.During his stay here, Liang will also meet his Brazilian counterpart Nelson Jobim and other high-ranking officials in Brazil. BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- China launched a large-scale tree-planting program against soil-erosion along the Three-Gorge Dam section of the country's largest Yangtze River Friday, with two launching ceremonies held in Beijing and Chongqing, simultaneously.The program is aimed to raise funds from individual and institutional donors for planting trees on 3.8 million mu (253,333 hectares) on the banks of the Yangtze River in Chongqing.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), is the honorary chairman of the organizational committee of the program.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu and Chongqing Party chief Bo Xilai attended and addressed the ceremony in Beijing.Hui spoke highly of the tree-planting program, saying that it would be new probe for the bio-environmental protection of major rivers in the country as well as a new, great contribution to the afforestation and protection of the Yangtze River.The vice premier recognized that the Yangtze River is still facing severe bio-environmental deterioration and soil erosion, though notable achievements have been made in the afforestation efforts along the river in the past decades.In his speech, Bo pledged that Chongqing will take three to five years to increase the forest coverage in the dam area to 65 percent, from the present 22.2 percent. Currently, soil-erosion has covered over 20,000 square kilometers, about 50 percent of the total area, he noted.According to previous reports, Chongqing plans to raise over 10 billion yuan (1.5 billion U.S. dollars) from institutional and individual donors for the tree-planting program.
