The two girls waiting on her porch asked if her daughter was home, she said; Bales told them yes and went to get her.“Are they here to start trouble?” she said she asked.“I don’t know who they are,” her daughter replied.When they walked to the front gate, however, she recognized one of them. Teenagers began to climb out of a pair of cars nearby, according to Bales.And then it was too late to escape.“I tried to cover her with my body, to get to my patio to try to get back inside,” Bales said. “They rushed us to make it over there. I saw her get snatched by the back of her hair and get thrown to the ground.”Mother and daughter were kicked and punched while one of the group stood at the bottom of their porch stairs and streamed the assault. Bales was terrified, she said. She had never experienced anything like it.“As a mother, all I wanted to do is protect her,” she said. “There was absolutely nothing I could do. If I got up she would've just gotten it worse."The attackers eventually left. Bales made sure her daughter had a place to stay out of town. Although she said she did not approve of her daughter fighting in school — “It wasn’t necessary.” — she was stunned and frightened by the scale of the other teens’ response. Daryl Dragon, one half of popular '70s duo The Captain & Tennille, died Wednesday, according to his publicist Harlan Boll.Dragon, whose ever-present captain's hat left no doubt about which half of the duo he was, died of renal failure in Prescott, Arizona, Boll said."He was a brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly," Toni Tennille said in a statement. "I was at my most creative in my life, when I was with him."Tennille was at Dragon's side when he passed away, Boll said.The duo's best-known songs included "Muskrat Love," "Do That to Me One More Time" and "Love Will Keep Us Together."Dragon, a classically trained pianist, was most at home behind the keyboard. One of his early gigs was as a backup musician for the Beach Boys in the mid '60s.Dragon and Tennille met in 1971 when she hired him to play piano for a musical called "Mother Earth." They married in 1975, a year after they signed a deal with A&M Records.Their first album produced the hit single "Love Will Keep Us Together," which enjoyed multiple weeks atop the Billboard chart.Dragon and Tennille separated in 2013 and finalized their divorce in 2014. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is facing another lawsuit over the department's loan forgiveness program aimed at helping defrauded students.More than 150,000 applications are pending, and some borrowers have been waiting years to hear whether they'll be granted debt relief. Seven borrowers, all of whom attended for-profit colleges, filed the lawsuit Tuesday."Department officials have not offered a timetable for reviewing these applications. It's becoming very clear that they're not treating them in good faith," said Eileen Connor, legal director at the Project on Predatory Student Lending, which filed the case on behalf of the seven borrowers.The department stopped processing claims under DeVos, who wants to rewrite the Obama-era rule that allows defrauded students to seek loan forgiveness.But a federal judge -- siding with Democratic attorneys general from 18 states and the District of Columbia -- ruled that DeVos' freeze was "arbitrary and capricious" and ordered immediate implementation of the rule in October.Still, the department did not process any more claims through the end of last year, according to the latest data available, and Connor says there's been no indication that it has started to review them again.The Department of Education did not immediately respond to a request for comment.DeVos has called the rule, known as Borrower Defense to Repayment, "bad policy." She's proposed offering partial loan forgiveness for qualifying students instead, based on the income of their peers who attended similar programs at other colleges.
