LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A developer in La Mesa says multi-generational homes could be the key to helping solve San Diego's housing crisis.The Phair Company has plans to build 30 such homes on a 10-acre patch of land near Eastridge Drive. The development is called "La Mesa Summit Estates."The homes will feature an extra master-suite, with a bathroom, kitchenette and separate entry. Families with aging parents or adult children who live at home can use that suite to give them independence, while still keeping the family together."We heard from the community that they wanted to have this," says Austin Dias, one of the partners in the company.The Phair Company did four community meetings to help plan the development. The idea for multi-generational homes came from people who attended. They also heard that people wanted one-story homes to avoid going up and down stairs.After the meetings, the company changed their plans, downsizing the community from 39 to 30 homes and adjusting the floor plans. Now, the development will have 22 single story homes, and eight two-story homes. They range from 2,300 to 3,000 square feet."I love it," says Dr. Karen Childress-Evans, who lives across the street from the land. "It's very conscientious to how society is growing right now. Kids are moving back home, we're taking care of our parents. This is a safe alternative to sending them off someplace else."The company also thinks the cost savings will help in today's housing market."This is just part of what needs to happen in San Diego," says Dias. "It just makes sense to keep families together. "The company has an interest list of around 80 potential buyers. They expect it to grow as word gets out about the project.Dias told 10News he's heard of other companies doing a few multi-generational houses in larger developments, but this is the only one he knows of where every home is built with the extra suite.The project still needs approval from the La Mesa Planning Commission, and then the City Council. Dias says he's hopeful that will happen this summer, so they can break ground and start construction in the fall. He's hopeful that the homes will be ready by this time next year. Like colleges and universities across the country, Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts was forced to experiment with a complex new plan this year that allowed more than 5,000 students to come back to campus. At the same time, the university had to institute rigorous new guidelines to keep COVID-19 from spreading.The key to success has been testing. Every student is required to get tested at least twice a week."The testing frequency matters,” said Tuft's University President Anthony Monaco.“If you wait a week or 10 days to test someone, they could be fully symptomatic and spread it to an apartment or dorm cluster."University officials say testing has prevented any major outbreaks. So far, the university has conducted 76,000 tests, and 36 students have tested positive since Aug. 3. Most notable though is the university's positivity rate is at .05 percent."It was not just about protecting their own individual health, it was also about protecting the vulnerable residents who live in and around the university," Monaco said.To keep any student who may test positive from spreading the virus, the university has constructed an extra 200-modular units of dorm space. The idea of the modular facilities is to give campus health officials a contained area to monitor students who test positive for the virus, while at the same time, keeping them out of the general population.But not every college is testing as frequently as Tufts. A recent survey conducted by the College Crisis Initiative at Davidson College looked at 1,400 schools nationwide. A majority of which had no testing plan in place, which health experts say has led to many of the outbreaks major colleges and universities have seen throughout the fall.There's also another lesson Tufts and other universities have learned about managing their student populations."Don’t ignore your off-campus students,” Monaco added. “Many just focused on on-campus and didn’t get them involved in testing or protocols." 1991

LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver while out jogging Monday night. The driver, identified as Michael Woodfill, was driving a Chevy work truck on North Woodside Avenue, east of Riverford Road around 6:30 p.m. when he began to drift off the road and hit a chain link fence, according to California Highway Patrol. It was at this point that Woodfill then attempted to correct the vehicle. In doing so, he overcorrected - sending the truck across the eastbound and westbound lanes. The truck continued moving north, where it hit and killed the female jogger before going down a dirt embankment and overturning. CHP said the female jogger suffered major injuries in the crash and was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital where she later died of her injuries. Woodfill stayed on scene after the crash and it was there that officers determined that he was under the influence of alcohol. The 46-year-old was arrested for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. LAS VEGAS — Right now, many recent high school graduates are facing a tough question — is it worth it to take on tens of thousands of dollars in debt to attend college during a pandemic?The irony of building credit is that it requires taking on debt — and no one wants to take on debt, especially during the pandemic. But according to one credit expert, there are some simple financial moves that parents can make right now to set up their kids for future financial success.Building credit isn't priority number one for kids, but it could open or close a lot of doors down the road."Good credit can make things easier for you in the future, whether it's securing loans, credit cards with better terms and rates. It might even help your ability to land a job or a desirable apartment," said Nathan Grant, a senior credit industry analyst at CreditCardInsider.com.Grant says that even though kids can't open their own bank account until their 18, parents can start teaching kids about credit long before that, perhaps with a prepaid card."Many of those allow for monthly direct deposits. So, you could have their allowance loaded directly on their card, and that could, at an early age, give them a way to understand budgeting and using a card that has a limit on it to teach them better spending habits," Grant said.Then, as children approach adulthood, Grant says that parents should consider making them an authorized user on a family credit card. Even if parents are not ready to let kids make purchases and payments on the card, Grant says just making them an authorized user will help them build credit."Many credit card issuers offer this, and most issuers report the account's activity in the authorized user's name, whether or not they are actually using the account. So, you can add them as a user and not give them access. It will hopefully build their credit up right out of the gate," Grant said.When kids are ready for their own cards, parents shouldn't just pick the shiniest piece of plastic. Grant says a secured credit card could be a safer option for someone with little or no credit."It uses a refundable security deposit that you fund yourself to fund the account's credit limit, upon approval," Grant said. "So, there's less risk on the issuer's part. So, for somebody who is new to credit or doesn't have any credit history, that could get your foot in the door.Grant said he couldn't offer advice either way on whether grads should pay for college with credit. But he said that anyone that decides to take a "gap year" should try to pay off any existing debts and save for the future.For those that do decide to go attend college, Grant has some general advice."The best rule of thumb, on top of just general responsible use, is just try not to use your credit card for purchases you know you won't be able to pay off before that monthly due date," he said. Lawyers for President Donald Trump recently provided the special counsel's office with documents in an attempt to limit the scope of an interview between Trump and special counsel Robert Mueller, The Washington Post reported Monday.Two people familiar with the situation told the Post that Trump's attorneys are worried that the President could get into trouble during a lengthy interview with the special counsel, and therefore provided "written descriptions" of moments under investigation to limit some of the questioning.News of the attempt by Trump's attorneys came after a weekend where the President railed repeatedly?against the Russia investigation, implying the special counsel team is politically biased against him and saying the probe itself should never have begun.Additionally, John Dowd, a lawyer for Trump, said in a statement?on Saturday that he prayed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein would end the investigation. And sources told CNN on Monday that Trump is expected to hire Joseph diGenova, an attorney who has claimed people in the Justice Department and FBI are trying to frame the President.The comments prompted warnings from some Republicans, and despite further warnings about the consequences of trying to force an end to the probe, lawmakers?played down the need to take up special legislation to protect Mueller from the President.The Post cited one person as saying Trump has told aides he is "champing at the bit" for an interview with the special counsel.Trump?said in January that he wanted to speak, under oath, with Mueller, and Dowd said shortly after the comment that he would be the one to decide if the President would do so.CNN reported last month that Trump still wanted to sit for an interview with Mueller, despite concerns from his attorneys. Last week, a source confirmed to CNN that Mueller had subpoenaed the Trump Organization for business documents. 1993
