Now, posts with the tag #IAmVanessaGuillen are circulating online, as people share their own stories of sexual assault in the military.Billiekai Boughton with the San Diego Women Veterans Network said any conversation like this can bring up hard memories for female veterans. She said while many women have a positive experience in the military, four out of five females report harassment or assault. The goal of her group is to support women through any of this pain. She says this is important in a community like San Diego which has about 26,000 female veterans.“For those of us who have been in the military and have had negative experiences, this can be a memory (sic) of feeling unsafe,” said Boughton.The group’s website says the most common request of women veterans in San Diego is to meet other women veterans. Their primary goal is to create a community for female military veterans, while also encouraging community service and policy change, which encourages and embraces the positive traits female vets have to offer.“Our friends remind us how strong we are. The following is an e-mail written by Lewis that's been shared around San Diego and beyond over the last several days:Katie Elizabeth White Boyd was born in 1880 on a plantation in Missouri and lived to be 100 years old. She lived through 21 presidencies. I was born in 1949, in a colored hospital, during legal segregation. I desegregated a school in Missouri and a school in California. I have lived through 13 Presidencies. As I think about the election, I am moved to share words of wisdom from my Great Aunt Kate and Myself, the things that she taught me and the things that I have learned.1. 4 Years “This too shall pass.”Whatever the outcome of the election, whichever candidate wins, they only have 4 years to influence what happens in the United States and the World.2. We the People “No one can stop you from being anything you want to be or doing anything you want to do but you.”We can be a government of all people, by all people and for all people when we exercise our voice beyond voting day.3. Treat All People With Respect “How you treat people speaks volumes about who you are and nothing about who they are.”Whether you are happy about the outcome or not, let us be an example of what you want to see in the world. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Patients were reunited with the men and women who care for them on Saturday at The Heart Institute at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. The event marked the 34th annual Heart Party. Hundreds of young heart patients and their families showed up for games, gifts and fun. Upstairs, doctors and nurses were caring for a couple newborns who had received heart transplants. For one baby to receive a heart, another has to give it. At just four months old, Zoey has taken part in the Lifesharing program.  553

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom declared an emergency Tuesday over wildfires burning throughout California as the state's power grid operator pleaded for continued conservation to avoid rolling blackouts. The grid operator praised residents and businesses for astonishing conservation efforts that kept the power on Monday night. The state is in a days-long heatwave that has stressed the electrical system and resulted in rolling blackouts over two nights last weekend. Outages, excessive heat, wildfire and the pandemic have people on edge. Evacuations were in effect or growing in several Northern California communities because of growing fires. Newsom demanded an investigation into two smaller weekend blackouts. 733

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)---San Diego Fire Department recruiter Captain Jason Shanley reminds people all the time, "If you don’t see it it’s hard for you to know that you can be it."As the department's only full-time recruiter he spends his days making connections, trying to show not only kids but adults that being a firefighter is possible, no matter who they are or where they come from."The narrative is that tall white guys with mustaches are the ones that become firefighters and that’s just not true," saidShanley.Take Captain Shanley for instance. His path to the fire department was paved by members of an organization called Brothers United, a group of African American firefighters in San Diego."I started taking some classes, met some other firefighters, got a mentor and then here I am 20 years later," Shanely said.His passion for what he does and desire to share it made him a perfect fit when the department created the full time recruiting position four years ago."As a department, we really wanted to focus more specifically on and make an actual effort to recruit more diversity into our fire department," he explained.Captain Shanley says some of the biggest obstacles are simply educating people on what it takes to become a firefighter. And once they do know, then trying to help them get the training they need.EMT schools are spread out all over San Diego County; hard to get to for those in the middle of the city without transportation."So we're working to try to bring some of those classes and resources to be more centrally located so we can solve that equity issue and that’s part of what we’re doing in the department as we speak," said Shanley.While there is still work to do, Captain Shanley says it's important the department has someone like him dedicated to hiring staff representative of the community it serves."I want other people to know this is something you can do, it’s more than just a job, it’s a career." 1950
