BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner, the National Development and Reform Commission, said Saturday it is drafting a development plan for the emerging industry of energy conservation and environmental protection.     The commission said in a statement posted on its Web site that the move is aimed to counter the impact of the global financial crisis by "accelerating the cultivation of emerging industries and aiming at a commanding height in future economic competition."     The development plan on the sector covers energy conservation, sustainable use of resources and environmental protection, according to the statement.     Technologies, equipment, products and services concerning energy conservation and environmental protection would be involved in the plan, it said.     The commission revealed no further details on the plan.

DAMASCUS, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Thursday that Syria is willing to enhance cooperation with China on the basis of mutual benefits.     Moallem made the pledge during a meeting with Wu Sike, China's Special Envoy to the Middle East, and both sides discussed bilateral relations and the latest situation in the Middle East region.     Wu reiterated that China supports Syria's commitment to achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on the relevant UN resolutions. However, we need to make efforts to develop bilateral relations further through political, economic and cultural cooperation and coordination in the international arenas," Wu added.     Wu Sike arrived in Damascus on Thursday. As the special representative of the Chinese Foreign Minister, he had visited Algeria and Qatar before reaching Syria.

HOHHOT, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The key to social harmony and stability in China is to strengthen and improve the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Xi Jinping, Vice President and member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said during a tour of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     Xi said issues concerning economic development and social stability were top priority in the country's minority areas during his tour from Aug. 22 to 25.     He visited villages, customs posts, companies, communities and schools in Hulun Buir, Manzhouli, Baotou, Erdos, and Hohhot. BEIJING, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Emerging Markets magazine has named China's Finance Minister Xie Xuren as Finance Minister of the Year, Asia 2009, the Ministry of Finance said Monday at its website.     The Emerging Markets believes that China's quick and proactive fiscal policies implemented in the past year have boosted economic growth and made contributions to global economic recovery, the ministry said.     In a written interview with the magazine, Xie said since the outbreak of the global financial crisis last year, the Chinese government timely and resolutely adjusted its macro-economic polices, carried out proactive fiscal and moderately easy monetary policies, and approved plans aiming to spur domestic consumption. BEIJING, Sept. 7 -- Automobile sales in China may accelerate 28 percent from a year ago to reach 12 million vehicles this year and overtake the number of autos sold in the United States, according to a regulatory official.    The remark was made by Chen Bin, chief director of the industry coordination department of the National Development and Reform Commission, at a conference in Tianjin on Saturday.     In contrast, General Motors Co and Ford Motor Co forecast sales in US will be about 10.5 million units this year, Bloomberg News said.     Auto sales in China in the first half reached 6.09 million units, a rise of 17.7 percent from a year ago, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.     The government's stimulus measures have boosted the auto industry and demand which is set to stay robust, Chen said. The measures included a 50 percent cut in the purchase tax to 5 percent on vehicles equipped with engines of less than 1.6 liters.
