Students across the country are spelling their way to greatness in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Students are in the process of advancing from classroom to school to region to earn a spot in the national finals in National Harbor, Maryland, in May 2020. Spellers who win their school spelling bee but don’t advance past their region can keep their dream alive of competing in the national spotlight. For the third year in a row, the Bee is offering its RSVBee program. It is a participation pathway that qualifies more spellers for the national finals. It is the only way students living in unsponsored regions can advance and is an additional opportunity for the best spellers in the country to compete on the national stage.The Bee created RSVBee with an eye toward fairness, accessibility, maintaining the integrity of the competition and delivering a quality Bee Week experience for all. The Scripps National Spelling Bee has more than 250 sponsors across the country who support the program and make it possible for local students to advance. Still, there are unsponsored sections in the U.S., and some of its sponsored regions have grown so large and competitive that RSVBee is the Bee’s answer to address access and fairness. “We’ve known for many years that large numbers of excellent spellers have had limited access to the national finals or no pathway at all,” said Paige Kimble, executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. “We created RSVBee to address this very issue and make our iconic competition accessible to a wider population of children who love words and language and enjoy competitive spelling.” The Bee is narrowing the field of the national finals to about 400 competitors, down from last year’s 562, with the intent of providing spellers and their families with a more personalized, quality experience during Bee Week. Researchers from the British Psychological Society released a report last week challenging stereotypes on why people are obese. The report states that "obesity is not simply down to an individual’s lack of willpower." The report claims there are a number of circumstances, some of which beyond a person's control, for becoming obese. "The people who are most likely to be an unhealthy weight are those who have a high genetic risk of developing obesity and whose lives are also shaped by work, school and social environments that promote overeating and inactivity," the BPS report says. "People who live in deprived areas often experience high levels of stress, including major life challenges and trauma, often their neighborhoods offer few opportunities and incentives for physical activity and options for accessing affordable healthy food are limited.""Research evidence points strongly to genes being a major part of the explanation for why some people are more susceptible to becoming obese than others," the BPS report continues.The report comes as 40 percent of American adults are considered obese, according to CDC figures.Fat shaming does not workThree weeks ago, late night comedian Bill Maher gave a controversial dialog on obesity, which he admitted was "fat shaming." "Fat shaming doesn’t need to end it needs to make a comeback," he said. Maher added, "Being fat isn’t a birth defect. Nobody comes out of the womb needing to buy two seats on the airplane. According to the BPS research, fat shaming does not work. "Shame does not motivate people or help them to make sustainable changes to their lives. In fact, weight stigma perpetuates a cycle of shame and weight gain at all levels of obesity. Emotions are running high through several Midwest states today, as people realize the devastation high flood waters caused.Thousands of acres of farmland saturated for days, combined with the potential animal losses, may put some farmers out of a livelihood. Farm animals weren’t the only animals affected by the storm. In Freeport, Illinois, firefighters used front-end loaders to rescue 14 dogs and eight cats, all for homeowners who had to no way into their neighborhoods. "My wife was at work, and I came back into town, and at that point I realized I couldn't get across the bridge, get into my home," says Freeport resident Shawn Starry.At Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, the rising flood waters have brought yet another concern. Col. Dave Norton says the water line was almost to the top of the windows at the headquarters of their security forces teams on-base. About a third of the base, which has 80 structures, has been under flood water since Saturday. "Places we would have meetings in routinely now have literally feet of water in them,” says Col. Norton. When an oily sheen began showing up on the surface of the flood water this week, officials feared a fuel tank may have ruptured. PUEBLO, Colo. — On the afternoon of November 4, 2019, the U.S. Attorney's office announced the arrest of Richard Holzer, a white supremacist who they say had plans to bomb a Jewish synagogue in Pueblo,Colorado, about two hours south of Denver. "We are here today to announce that federal law enforcement, working in conjunction with the Pueblo Police Department, has successfully stopped what we believe to be an imminent threat of domestic terrorism against a Colorado religious institution," authorities said.Authorities say Holzer met up with three undercover FBI agents to purchase bombs in a planned attack against Temple Emanuel, the second oldest synagogue in the state.According to a criminal complaint, FBI agents had been talking with Holzer since September, tracking multiple Facebook accounts of his in which he talked to other white supremacists through private messages about attacking Jewish people. In one message, Holzer said, "I wish the Holocaust really did happen." Holzer told undercover agents he hired someone to poison the synagogue's water supply and was now preparing for a "racial holy war.""Jewish community is tiny in Pueblo," one Colorado woman said. "And we all know each other and support one another and our children."Thirty-five families are part of this small congregation. Michael Atlas-Acuna, the president of Temple Emanuel's board of directors, is still a bit shaken by the plot to blow up a synagogue that was built in 1900. "I looked at the building and the inside, and I thought, 'God, we could have lost this,' " he said.If there's a silver lining to take away from the foiled terror plot, it's that the congregation is now stronger than ever before. It was a packed house at a recent Friday night Shabbat service.The congregation called for peace and happiness, and they said they won't let what happened scare them away. "We're going to be here another 100 years," Atlas-Acuna said. "We're going to take the right precautions that we need to take in order to be safe. Maybe the reason was to wake everybody up and realize that there is that threat out there, and to bring everybody together, and I think the whole community is going to be that much more alert."
