Many high school seniors around the country are finalizing their college applications. As officials begin reviewing students' transcripts and extracurricular activities, they want to offer reassurance that there will be understanding when it comes to accommodating students who've had their high school careers thwarted by 2020."Parents are very anxious about what’s going to happen to their children. How is the application process? Where will they go? Students are anxious because the SATs and ACTs are canceled, and they're coming on board slowly but surely. But what does this mean? They didn’t have grades , most of them, coming out of junior year because things went pass/fail or credit/no credit and now they've been hybrid environments, as well," said Ben Matthew Corpus, Vice Provost of Enrollment at Florida Polytechnic University, an all-STEM university.Corpus says there's a lot of anxiety among college-hopeful students right now. But he and other university admissions officials say not to stress. Admissions committees are also making adjustments, even with the state university system in Florida still requiring their applicants take the SAT."The challenge with that is, if I was a junior last spring and I was planning to take the SAT, it got canceled. And so I thought, 'OK, maybe I’ll take it in the summer,' and it got canceled as well. And now we’re into fall and there are not that many test dates and now the admission deadlines are upon us, what will I do," said Corpus.Florida Poly wants to assure students that they can still apply, and this year they won't be weighing SAT and ACT scores heavily on their college applications. At the University of Denver, they are test optional. In other words, taking the SAT or ACT is not a requirement. "Last year our full pool of 22,000, 25% of our applicant pool applied test optional and we anticipate with far fewer sites to test this year that could be 40-50% or more. And we’re okay with that, if we have more than half of our pool applying test optional this year, we’ll make it work," said Todd Rinehart, Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Management at the University of Denver."I think the main sense that our staff has on right now is flexibility and patience. We just know it's going to be different," said Rinehart. Rinehart has some advice for parents and children who are applying to college this fall: don't stress about the extracurriculars or lack of any during 2020. "Those things didn’t carry a lot of weight to begin with. When you really peel the onion back, admission committees are primary looking at the rigor of your curriculum and performance in class and all those other things maybe added up are maybe 10-15% of the decision but really the bulk of the decision is still the student’s academic record," said Rinehart. But what about those students who've suffered academically because of the pandemic or online learning? "If you’re online a few days, I know it's just easier for students to miss assignments or a quiz or test or they just don’t test as well doing something online than in person. So, yes, we got through this season of applicants with incredible eyes wide open and with just a sense of flexibility and understanding," said Rinehart. Rinehart adds students should be reassured that they will still get a fair and consistent evaluation and that no child should have 2020 work against them any more than it already has. 3426

Members of our Election Task Force have investigated this allegation. This polling place is located in an interior room and the sign in question is further than 10 feet from it. Many of us like to enjoy an ice-cold soda, but have you wondered what might be lurking on the soda dispensers, from the older ones to the new machines with one central nozzle?Scripps reporters took swabs from five types of locations: a movie theater, a fast food restaurant, a fast casual restaurant, a gas station and a hospital cafeteria to see just how clean or dirty some soda fountains are.The swabs were sent to a food safety lab.Dr. Helene Ver Ecke, a microbiologist at Metropolitan State University of Denver, studied the results. "So it is concerning that that particular species was found to be prevalent," said Ver Ecke as she looked over the results. She said some of the levels concerned her."But forty five hundred thousand CFUs is a lot," she said. Here is what was found. The test at a gas station seemed to be the most in the clear. The results:GAS STATION:  941

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Florida police officer’s wife died after becoming trapped in the back of his patrol vehicle for several hours during a hot afternoon.Investigators are treating the death of 56-year-old Clara Paulino as an accident. She died Friday afternoon while her 58-year-old husband Aristides Paulino was sleeping in their Miami Shores home after finishing a midnight shift.Officials say she had climbed into the backseat of his marked SUV to find something when the doors somehow closed, and a self-locking mechanism engaged.Temperatures reached over 90 degrees as she spent about four hours in the vehicle. 647

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The family of Breonna Taylor and their attorneys reacted Friday to the grand jury's decision not to bring homicide charges against the Louisville officers who shot and killed the 26-year-old in March.Watch their comments below:In a press conference led by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, he and the other lawyers called for the transcripts in the grand jury proceedings to be released.“When we think about this grand jury proceeding, if you want us to accept the result, release the transcripts, so we can have transparency,” said Crump.During the briefing at Louisville’s Jefferson Square Park, attorney Lonita Baker questioned whether Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron even presented the grand jury with charges on behalf of the killing of Taylor.“Don’t tell us the grand jury made this determination, if it was your office’s determination,” said Baker.Following the attorneys’ remarks, a family member read a statement on behalf of Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer. In it, she said her daughter died because the system failed her.“Cameron alone didn’t fail her, but it ended with a lack of investigation failing her,” said Palmer. “The officer who told a lie to obtain a search warrant failed her. The judge who signed the search warrant failed her. The terrorist who broke down her door failed her. The system as a whole has failed her.”Palmer also said she never had faith in Cameron to begin with.“I knew he was too inexperienced to deal with a job of this caliber,” said Palmer. “I knew he had already chosen to be on the wrong side of the law. The moment he wanted to the grand jury to make the decision, what I had hoped was that he knew he had the power to do the right thing, that he had the power to start the healing of this city, that he had the power to help mend over 400 years of oppression.”Palmer was reassured Wednesday of why she has no faith in the legal system or the police that she said are not made to protect Black and brown people.“But when I speak on it, I’m considered an angry Black woman,” said Palmer. “But know this, I am an angry Black woman. I am not angry for the reasons you would like me to be, but angry because our Black women keep dying at the hands of police officers, and Black men, angry because our children are dying at the hands of police officers, and I’m angry because this nation is learning that our Black women, dying at the hands of police officers, and this is not OK.”Palmer said the world was robbed of a “queen” who was just starting her life.“You didn’t just rob me and my family, you robbed the world of a queen, a queen willing to do a job that most of us couldn’t stomach to do, a queen willing to build up anyone around her, a queen who was starting to pave her path,” she said. Palmer ended her statement by saying that she doesn’t wish the pain she’s suffering on anyone else.“I hope you never know the pain of your child being murdered 191 days in a row,” she said. The attorney general's office issued the following statement in response to the comments from Taylor's family and their attorneys: 3093
