Researchers from the University of Roehampton in London and the University of Sydney found that kangaroos know how to communicate with humans if they need help.According to the study published in the journal Biology Letters on Wednesday, out of the 11 kangaroos researched, 10 of them gazed at researchers when they were unable to access food during an unsolvable task. Out of those 10, nine of the marsupials would alternate their gaze from the object to the human.In some cases, researchers said, the kangaroos would sometimes even nudge or scratched them to ask for help, said co-author Alexandra Green, according to the University of Sydney.Before the study, researchers thought that only domesticated animals, like dogs, cats, wolves, horses, and sometimes goats, were capable of communicating with humans with an enhanced form of communication.Officials said the study's kangaroos were from various zoos in Australia and are familiar with people but are not considered domesticated. 996

(KGTV) — Two people are dead following a wrong-way collision on Interstate 15 in North San Diego County late Friday.A white Hyundai Elantra heading northbound entered southbound I-15 from Deer Springs Rd. at about 11 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol. The male driver was reportedly using the fast lane as he traveled at high speed in the wrong direction, CHP said.A CHP trooper started a traffic break near State Route 76 in an attempt to stop the Hyundai, but the vehicle failed to stop for the traffic break and continued northbound. The CHP unit turned around and started following the Hyundai from the northbound side.TIMELINE: Wrong-way crashes in San Diego CountyJust before 11:30 p.m., CHP received a report of a vehicle crash near Rainbow Valley Blvd. Troopers arrived to find the Hyundai had collided with a grey Honda Civic traveling in the right direction.The female driver of the Honda, identified as a 20-year-old from Murrieta, died at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai, identified as a 23-year-old from Lake Elsinore, was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he later died.Investigators believe impairment was a factor in the crash. RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) – It was a nightly ritual. Steve Faught would put his dog, Riley, in his old Ford pickup and take him to a nearby baseball field to play fetch.  On his way Thursday night, he stopped by Stage Stop Liquor and Gas to pick up a six-pack of beer. But he never made it to the field. Faught was found at the gas station with a major injury to his neck, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. He was airlifted to a hospital for surgery but did not survive. His older brother, Jerry Faught, described him as funny, with a warm personality. “To him, life was a good place,” he said. “He was just the kind of person you’d like to know.” Faught heard the news from Steve’s wife, who called him at his home in Portland. His older brother instincts kicked in. “I couldn’t help him. I couldn’t save him. That’s hard,” he said. Homicide detectives are trying to piece together what happened and what led up to the altercation, but as of Friday morning they had not been able to locate any witnesses or surveillance video. The suspect, 26-year old Jarrett Wishnick, has been arrested for murder. 1169

Kevin McCarthy was elected House minority leader Wednesday, according to members of Congress in the closed-door meeting where the elections took place, meaning the California Republican will lead House GOP members after Speaker Paul Ryan leaves Capitol Hill at the end of his term in January.The vote was 159-43.With Ryan headed for the exits, McCarthy, the current No. 2 House Republican, was long viewed as the heavy favorite to become minority leader in the new Congress, the highest-ranking GOP leadership post with Republicans in the minority after losing control of the House of Representatives in the 2018 midterms.McCarthy faced a long-shot challenge from Rep. Jim Jordan, the co-founder of the conservative Freedom Caucus, but the California Republican is expected to prevail in his bid to become minority leader. Ryan announced in April that he would not seek re-election and has endorsed McCarthy, the House majority leader for the past four years, to be his successor.Trump and McCarthy have spoken about leadership races recently, territory that Presidents usually avoid so not as to seem like they're alienating members of their own party. In private conversations, Trump has pushed for Jordan and another close conservative ally -- Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina -- to have the top Republican positions on key committees, according to a source familiar. McCarthy doesn't dole out those positions-- that's for the House GOP Steering Committee -- but plenty of people on the Steering Committee are loyal to McCarthy and would heed his word. "On the same note, I think Jim Jordan is a smart, tough, focused individual. So I respect him as well. We'll see over the next couple of days."Next in line for the GOP leadership hierarchy in the new Congress is Rep. Steve Scalise, the current No. 3 House Republican, who is vying for the position of minority whip in the new Congress. Scalise, as majority whip, gained a higher national profile after he was injured last year in a shooting during a Republican congressional baseball practice. Scalise is not facing a challenge for the position.Rep.
