COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — More than a day after 24 people were killed and hundreds more injured in a series of severe storms and tornadoes in the areas surrounding Nashville, 21 people are still missing.The 21 missing people — five of whom are children — are all from Putnam County, located east of downtown Nashville. The county was one of the hardest hit areas of the storms Tuesday morning, with 18 people already pronounced dead in the county. Eighty-eight people in the county were treated for injuries relating to the storm.The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said they've searched about 60% of the area, and they've been checking places all night that were in the tornado's path.Putnam County Sheriff Eddie Farris said there's a possibility that officials could find some missing people when they launch a particular area Wednesday morning."An approximately 20-acre field that is located between Echo Valley Estates and North McBroom Chapel Road. That area is a field area that is marshy, that is 6 or 7 feet tall. It's a slow process. The way the tornado traveled, there's a lot of debris down there," Farris said.The clean-up efforts are going to take quite some time. Fifteen law enforcement agencies are teaming up to help out for the next few days. During an emotional Staples Center memorial service for NBA legend Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka on Monday detailed text messages between him and Bryant, which may have been the last ever sent by Bryant. Pelinka said that Bryant had texted him while on board the doomed helicopter, which crashed into a Southern California hillside, killing Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven others. The nine were en route to a basketball tournament where Bryant would coach his daughter Gianna’s team. Pelinka said he was at his church’s Sunday service at the time, where he normally does not check his phone. But Pelinka said he had the urge to check his phone as “a gentle, other worldly nudge compelled” him to open the message. Pelinka said that Bryant asked him if he knew of a certain baseball agent in Southern California. “Kobe texted back his desire to help a friend of his secure a baseball agency internship for one of his young daughters,” Pelinka said. “Kobe vouched for the girl’s character, intellect and work ethic; he clearly wanted to champion a bright future for her.” Pelinka responded back to Bryant to say he would put in a plan in place to get that done. “A handful of minutes later, Kobe and Gianna and seven other beautiful souls ascended into heaven,” he said. “Kobe had been texting me from the helicopter.“The girl in that text chain he wanted to help so badly was Lexi Altobelli, the surviving daughter of coach John Altobelli, who was on the helicopter. Deterring kids from the streets is a challenge many communities around the country are dealing with, but Howard Cato has a very specific plan to do just that. Cato started a summer camp, where he takes kids to a BMX bike track, teaching them the basics of the sport.“BMX, bicycle motocross,” he explains. “What I do is, we race bikes.”For Cato, BMX was all about the thrill.“Oh man, it’s the adrenaline,” he says, grinning.But looking back on the hobby he picked up in his childhood, he realizes now that it was more than that; BMX gave him a hobby that kept him off the streets—that is until his father died.“I stopped racing BMX. I found the streets, going out there on the streets, man, and leaving my bikes,” he says. “And I ended up getting shot several times and paralyzed.”Eventually he found his way back. These days, he’s making sure kids in his hometown of Oakland have a chance to learn the skill that set him on the right track.Cato started the program Flood the Streets with Bikes, which aims to provide bikes to kids who don’t have them.
