When Amy Anderson and her son walked into George Washington High School years ago they felt a gut-wrenching reaction, coming face to face with a larger than life mural depicting images of slavery and dead Native Americans.Tuesday evening, after decades of debate and outcry, the San Francisco Unified School District unanimously voted to cover up this 1936-era fresco, "Life of Washington."A fight started in the 1960sThe mural was commissioned by the US Government in 1936 under a New Deal art program and painted by well-known muralist Victor Arnautoff.During the Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960's, members of school's Black Student Union called for the removal of the mural.Instead of removing the mural then, the District hired black artist Dewey Crumpler to paint a "response mural," showing Native Americans and African Americans in a more positive light.Three years ago, the call for removal was reignited when Anderson's son Kai decided to enroll at Washington High.A Native American student at Washington HighAnderson and her son are Native American. Kai told his mom he would walk into school with his head down everyday so he would not have to see the murals on the wall."They (Native students) actually see themselves and their ancestors up there on those walls and they feel pain," said Anderson.In late fall of 2018, Anderson and fellow indigenous activist Mariposa Villaluna drafted a resolution to send to Mark Sanchez, a school board commissioner. The move resulted in the creation of the district's Reflection and Action Committee to decide what to do about the "Life of Washington" mural.In February, the committee recommended to the school board that the mural should be covered in white paint before the start of the 2019 school year.At odds with school valuesThe committee argued that the mural did not live up to the district's student-centered focus and did not represent its values of social justice, diversity, and unity. It added that the mural glorified slavery, genocide, and oppression.At Tuesday evening's school board meeting, those in favor of keeping the mural argued the that artist intended to provoke thoughtful discussions about oppression and that the mural could be used as a teaching tool for future generations.Villaluna said the school can find ways to teach these issues without students having to pass by the mural each morning."The students thought this would be good as a lesson but not something we walk by every day," said Villaluna.According to the 2517

The report also suggested that more than 20 million jobs had been wiped away from the economy.But Friday's report painted an encouraging sign that businesses are quickly re-hiring workers as states gradually lift coronavirus-related lockdown restrictions. Unvaccinated people under age 18 are banned from public places in Rockland County, New York, as of midnight Wednesday, according to John Lyon, director of strategic communications for County Executive Ed Day.Day will announce the order Tuesday.The declaration is an effort to contain an outbreak of measles that began in October; 153 cases have been confirmed in the county."We're not punishing the people who are doing the right thing already and following the rules. We just want to encourage everyone to do the right thing so we can stop this outbreak," Lyon said. The step is "extremely unusual. [We] don't believe it's been done anywhere in the country before."Measles is a highly contagious virus that is prevented with the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that the two-dose vaccine be given at 12 to 15 months of age and the second between age 4 and 6.This is the 26th week -- the sixth month -- of the outbreak in Rockland County, according to Lyon, who said it has been the longest outbreak in the United States since before measles was declared eliminated in 2000.Public places include synagogues, churches, schools, restaurants, stores and public buses. Children who are current with the vaccine schedule but not fully vaccinated against measles because they are not old enough are exempt from the order.The order does not apply to people who are older than 18 because "we did not want to prevent anyone from going to work," but unvaccinated adults are also encouraged to get vaccinated. In some cases, the harder the hit, the bigger the play. As the game of football gets more competitive, it has created a growing concern: head injuries that can lead to long-term complications.“Across the state of Oklahoma there is a decline in kids that are playing football,” Sam Fairchild, Warner Public Schools Athletic Director, said. “In this day and time, we face a lot of parents that have the fear of allowing their kids to play for fear of major injury or even death.”But in the small Muskogee County town of Warner, school officials are squashing the stigma of concussions and football with cutting edge technology.“This community realizes we got to do what big people do, even when we are small,” McElyea said. “That's what you do. You got to plan for that even while you are small."The district is taking the steps to enhance player safety for every football player in the district, grades 6 through 12.Inside each maroon and gold Eagles helmet is Riddell's latest innovation in head impact monitoring technology. An "InSite" training tool inside each helmet builds a player's impact profiles. That means for each hit, a piece of data is recorded in real time, which identifies what part of the player's head was hit and how hard. Players stats will then be stored and compared in a national database with players all over the country. Coaches can then learn from the data and teach players to improve technique.“That feedback that we get from this helmet will help me as a coach to make sure that not only am I teaching proper technique, but my players are performing with that proper technique,” Chuck Capps, Warner High School Head Football Coach, said.Not only that, but the censors will also detect a high impact hit while on the field, which then sends a red flag to the coaches immediately.
