With a .6 billion Mega Millions jackpot up for grabs Tuesday night, lottery players across the country are no doubt looking for any edge they can get.Disclaimer: Your odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350, no matter which numbers you pick or where you buy your tickets.Mathematicians say the simplest way to increase your odds is to buy more tickets. Think about it: Two tickets give you twice the chance (though your odds are still minimal), and buying 100 million tickets would give you a 100 million chances (but you could still lose, and lose 0 million in the process).Whatever you do, don't overspend. Mega Millions reminds players that gambling can be addictive and very damaging. The information below is presented solely for entertainment purposes only, and the E.W. Scripps Co. is not responsible for any losses incurred by using the following tips.  947

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — West Palm Beach says the number of police cars that had to be pulled off the streets due to engine failure has risen to 49.City Administrator Jeff Green said at this point they believe a tainted fuel shipment in the middle of March is to blame. All of those cars had traces of biodiesel in their tanks, which are meant for unleaded only.West Palm Beach Police Public Information Officer David Lefont said it is not impacting public safety since the agency is supplementing with rental cars.“We have captains driving around in minivans,” Lefont said.Seventeen patrol cars have gotten new engines and are back in service. The other affected cars are non-marked cars.Green said Miami-Dade County police reported they had to pull 120 cars with the same issue. In West Palm Beach the cars affected are all Ford, which is why the automaker is investigating the case as well. But Green said at this point they believe it was the fuel shipment. They’re currently investigating where the shipment came from. 1035

When a young sperm whale washed up on a beach in southern Spain, scientists wanted to know what killed it. They now know: waste -- 64 pounds of it. Most of it plastic, but also ropes, pieces of net and other debris lodged in its stomach. The discovery has prompted authorities in Murcia, Spain, to launch a campaign to clean up its beaches."The presence of plastic in the ocean and oceans is one of the greatest threats to the conservation of wildlife throughout the world, as many animals are trapped in the trash or ingest large quantities of plastics that end up causing their death," Murcia's general director of environment, Consuelo Rosauro said in a statement.A sperm whale's diet is usually comprised of giant squid. But the 33-foot long mammal that washed up on the beach of Cabo de Palos on February 27 was unusually thin. 839

With major movies filmed in Georgia over the last few years, Atlanta has become the "Hollywood of the South." For the last few months, however, all production has stopped.“The type of work that we do to prep for movies has basically gone quiet,” said Craig Miller, who has been in the entertainment industry for more than 35 years. This year, his Atlanta-based production company, Craig Miller Productions, cut back due to coronavirus concerns.Movie studios shutting down across Georgia is having a huge economic impact on other industries.“Fiscal year 2019 we were at .9 billion direct to spend,” said Lee Thomas with the Georgia Film Office, who predicts that number to be very much smaller this year. Thomas says Georgia’s film industry directly and indirectly employs about 53,000 workers, making it one of the biggest industries in the state.“It’s not only the people that work directly in the industry but all the ancillary services from rental cars to hotels to restaurants,” she said.Restaurants like Palmer’s in Peachtree City, Georgia.Ashley Edwards is the owner of this restaurant where cast and crew often come to eat. She says her business has lost big bucks since the shutdown.“I’d say three days a week at least we have about maybe 0 to 0 worth of to go orders by 11:30 a.m.,” Edwards said. "We’ve definitely lost that business."Back on set, Miller is following the Georgia Film Academy’s new COVID Compliance Course, a new video detailing preventative practices approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with the goal of getting the industry back to work safely.“They’re doing temperature checks and COVID-19 testing,” Miller said about people returning to work.As COVID-19 cases continue to rise across the country, however, Miller says it’s making restarting production more difficult. 1841

While there are still questions about whether trick-or-treating will happen in 2020 and how neighborhoods will make it possible, there is no question Americans like their Halloween candy.Sales of Halloween candy and chocolate at grocery stores are up 17 percent over 2019 so far this season, according to the National Confectioners Association. Total sales, including online purchases, is up 13 percent year-over-year.The National Confectioners Association, NCA, represents manufacturers and suppliers of sweet treats, gum, mints and chocolates.Their research showed chocolate is driving the increase. Halloween chocolate sales are up 25 percent over 2019 so far. The NCA released data over the summer showing chocolate was the treat of choice of Americans during the pandemic, with sales increasing five percent March through August over the same time period in 2019. Sales of premium chocolate during that time was up 12 percent year-over-year. Ferrara Candy, which makes Sweetarts, Nerds, Brach’s Candy Corn, Gobstoppers and more, said Halloween sales bring in about .5 billion in sales. In an interview with Axios, CEO Todd Siwak said their company learned a lot from the drop in sales for Easter. This was also the time many stores were closing because of lockdowns to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Even as shopping has picked up a little, they have made some changes.“As the frequency in-store is reduced by the shopper, so fewer trips but bigger baskets, we wanted to make sure we were there presenting the opportunity to consumers,” Siwak said. He added Ferrara Candy created more individually-wrapped confections and got product to stores earlier to extend the selling season. There are still about three weeks until Halloween, and the industry expects sales to increase. Siwak says about 60 percent of the sales for Halloween candy happen in the last few weeks before the holiday. The NCA data also suggested Americans are getting more excited for Halloween in 2020. They found 80 percent believe they will find creative and safe ways to celebrate this year. The response was just 63 percent in July. 2125
