Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and this year, it looks like it might also bring an early start to the 2018 hurricane season.Although hurricane season doesn't begin until June 1, a tropical system off the Yucatan Peninsula has become Subtropical Storm Alberto as of Friday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center.For holiday beachgoers flocking to the US Gulf Coast looking for their first taste of summer sun, Alberto is making the forecast look pretty grim.Subtropical storms are low pressure centers that have characteristics of both tropical storms (which have warm cores and get their energy from warm ocean water) and more traditional storm systems (which have cold cores that get their energy from clashes of warm and cold air) that occur in the midlatitudes with cold and warm fronts.The threats associated with subtropical and tropical storms are largely the same: heavy rainfall, gusty winds and rough surf.Given that Alberto has a couple of days to traverse warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico, it could become fully tropical.Forecast models, which were showing very different possible scenarios earlier in the week, are now in agreement in bringing the storm north into the Gulf Coast by the latter half of the three-day weekend.A hurricane hunter aircraft is scheduled to fly through the system Friday to provide more information on the structure, according to the National Hurricane Center. 1441

MIAMI (AP) — The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) says Tropical Storm Nana has formed south of Jamaica, and is taking aim at Central America.An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft crew flew into the storm, recording maximum sustained winds of 50 mph with higher gusts.Nana is the earliest 14th named storm on record, beating Nate, which formed on Sept. 6 in 2005, according to Colorado State University professor Phil Klotzbach.The hurricane center says Nana is centered about 120 miles southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, and is moving west at 18 mph on a path that could damage Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and southernmost Mexico.The NHC said Tuesday afternoon that Nana is forecast to be a hurricane near landfall.Here are the Key Messages for Tuesday early afternoon for Tropical Storm #Nana. Michigan State University is facing a federal lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan Southern District, accusing the school of not following federal guidelines in a reported rape.The lawsuit was filed by an attorney for a student who claims she was sexually assaulted by three members of the men's basketball team in April 2015, a week after the team lost to Duke in the NCAA Tournament.The team members are identified only as John Does in the lawsuit.According to the allegations in the suit, the unidentified woman was an 18-year-old in her first year at MSU at the time of the assault. She says she was with her roommate at Harper's Bar in East Lansing when most of the MSU basketball team arrived at the bar sometime after midnight on April 12, 2015.The woman alleges that one of the team members approached her and offered to buy her a drink. She says that after she accepted, the man asked if she would like to meet the "other guys" on the team.According to the lawsuit, the woman accepted because, as a sports journalism major, interacting with members of the basketball team was of interest to her.However, the lawsuit says that at no time did she indicate a romantic interest in any of the team members who approached her.As the night progressed, the lawsuit alleges that one of the team members asked the woman to come to their apartment for a party. She says that as incentive, one of the players lied and told her that her roommate was already headed to the party.According to the lawsuit, the woman contends she was having a hard time holding her glass, even though she had not had much to drink at that point.The lawsuit says that, when the woman arrived at the the location of the purported party, it turned out to be one of the team member's off-campus apartment and that few people were actually present. The lawsuit also says that the woman's roommate was not among those present.According to the lawsuit, the woman tried to text, but she was not able to control her thumbs to compose a text. It is at this point, according to the lawsuit, that the woman says the first player pulled her into a bedroom and told her "you are mine for the night." The woman says this made her uncomfortable and she made her way back into the living room, where, according to the lawsuit, her physical troubles continued and she realized something was wrong and that she might have been drugged.The lawsuit contends that at this point, the second player offered to show the woman his basketball memorabilia in his bedroom, where she was thrown down onto the bed and raped from behind.The lawsuit continues with the allegation that once the player, identified only as John Doe 2, finished raping the Plaintiff, the other two players, identified as John Doe 1 and John Doe 3, each came in and took turns raping the woman.The lawsuit says the woman does not remember anything after that, until she woke up on a couch a few hours later.The lawsuit then contends that the woman reported the rape to the Michigan State University Counseling Center, where, once they were informed the three alleged attackers were basketball players, the counselor's demeanor changed and that she told the woman that she needed another person in the room.The lawsuit contends that the staff person told her that her options were to file a police report, or deal with the aftermath of the rape on her own. However, the suit also contends that the staff made it clear that, if she reported the rape, she would face an uphill battle and unwanted media attention.The lawsuit also contends that staff members made comments to the effect of "we have had many other students in the same situation who have reported, and it has been very traumatic for them" and other comments 'implying' that it would not be in the plaintiff's best interest to report the incident to police, specifically "if you pursue this, you are going to be swimming with some really big fish."The lawsuit also contends that the counseling center did not advise the woman to seek STD or pregnancy testing, have a physical exam, or seek medical treatment. They also, allegedly, did not notify the woman of her option of reporting the rape to the Office of Institution Equity, or her Title IX rights, protections and accommodations.According to the lawsuit, this caused thw woman to become so frightened that she did not report the rape and she did not seek help from the Michigan State University Sexual Assault Program for 10 months.The woman was also not informed of her right to have a no-contact order put in place to keep the men out of her dorm, Brody Hall, where the woman says she would often see one or all three of the men in the dining hall.The suit contends that the woman was so traumatized after the rape that she sought psychiatric treatment at Sparrow Hospital in October 2015, stopped attending classes and was forced to withdraw in the fall semester of 2015.The suit seeks damages from the school and injunctive relief to have MSU put steps in place to prevent sexual assault. 5119

MCAS MIRAMAR (KGTV) -- Some Grand Princess passengers quarantined at MCAS Miramar say, what the President said in his address Friday about the quality care on base, is not a reality. According to the San Diego County Public Health department, two female Grand Princess passengers in their 70's have tested positive for the Coronavirus. A quarantined passenger at Miramar told 10News that not only has she not been tested, but the base also seems to be understaffed and chaotic. It was supposed to be a lovely two-week vacation around the Hawaiian Islands. "Another day in paradise… in prison," Karen Lira said.By prison, Lira means, MCAS Miramar. She and her husband Jeff have been there since late Thursday, after eight days of self-quarantine on the Grand Princess cruise ship, floating off the coast of San Francisco. "It was quite the waiting game, which just ramped up everybody's stress," Lira said.She said that stress increased tenfold after the Government diverted their vacation to San Diego. "After we left a ship at five pm, we heard it into a bus, which was a crazy situation and then crammed into a plane. And once we got onto the airport, we were told that there was no pilot for the plane," Lira said. Lira said she was baffled to see President Donald Trump on Friday, address the public on how smooth the transition from the cruise ship to Miramar played out. "We had tremendous success in Oakland, where Vice president Pence did a fantastic job," the President said."It was not smooth. It wasn't a beautiful operation," Lira responded. When they finally got to their room on base around 2 a.m. Friday, they were given a welcome note. It explained that food would be delivered to their rooms three times a day. They were advised to always wear a mask, when they stepped out of their rooms. They were also told to keep a six-foot distance from each other at all times."People found out there was food in another building, and people were going a little crazy," Lira said. "Social distancing, wear masks, stay six feet apart from each other. That went out the window immediately when we got off the ship."Lira said she wants the public to know the truth about their situation. So far, they have not been tested. They haven't even got their temperature taken since arriving in Miramar. She is hoping the situation gets better, so she can get back to Oregon, virus-free."If we are not tested any day soon, when is the clock going to start ticking? We are going to be let out of here?" Lira asked. So far, Lira and her husband are feeling healthy. At this point, they want to get tested, so that a negative result can finally get them home to Oregon. She said she is happy to continue the self-quarantine at home if necessary. 2747

It's customizable, so you can change the widgets that appear there.Photos: Apple says the camera is improved, and photos will take up less space due to its new high efficiency image file format (HEIC), which takes up less room than JPEGs. (Though you will still have to option to save them as JPEGs). The Verge explains the file issues in detail.Do Not Disturb: A wonderful new Do Not Disturb improvement now alerts people who text you that you are driving, and cannot text back. You can turn this on or off manually, or with the iPhone 6 or newer, it will do it automatically when it senses you are diving. (Yes, you can turn it off if you are in a bus or a passenger). MetroUK has a good article explaining how this works.Do Not Disturb is just one of several new safety features, according to a good review in The Independent.Siri: The Siri voice assistant has too many improvements to list, but the biggest one is that she will do audio translations into French, Spanish and several other languages. This is a huge improvement for foreign travelers who don't know a word of their new country's language.Maps:  Maps now give more detailed information, and even speed limits of highways, as explained in a report in MacWorld.iPad: The iPad version now lets you easily run multiple screens and apps, making it look more like a Microsoft product (did I just say that?)The website TechDotMatrix lists a number of other good improvements with iOS 11.The BadOlder apps:  iOS 11 no longer supports older 32-bit apps, so if your favorite old app is not 64 bits, you will have to update or delete it.iPhone 5:  If you are still using a four- or five-year-old iPhone 5, you cannot download iOS 11 (here's a full list of devices that are compatible). It will work on the iPhone 5s, though some users report it slows the phone down. (If you still have the iPhone 4, you shouldn't be even reading this column. Please buy a new phone, then get back to me). I have a 5s, and so far everything is fine, though the phone feels a bit slower opening apps.Photo compatibility: The new HEIC photo format (to save space) may not be compatible with PCs and Microsoft-based photo editors without conversion to JPEG files. The Verge has a good writeup on this.? Microsoft Exchange issues: While we are talking Microsoft, some users report problems with the Exchange for iOS app, and with Outlook 365. I have not noticed this problem on my iPhone 5s, with the update.The UglyBattery Drain: Really, there's not much ugly with iOS 11, unless you find it dramatically draining your battery, as some early users report. Gotta Be Mobile explains what to do if your battery is now running down fast. Apple forums are already filled with suggestions for improving battery life if this happens, such as shutting off automatic app refreshing.Not enough space: Also, keep in mind you need two?gigs of free space to install the update. If you have an older iPhone with lots of videos on it, you may have to delete some videos or music.One hour download: Anticipate the whole download, updating and installation to take an hour on average.Don't try to do it on the fly, like 20 minutes before an important meeting (as I tried to do, oops). Also, there is a 10-minute period late in the installation process where you cannot use your phone at all, as all you will see is a slow bar moving.So it is best to do the update at home, at night, when there is no urgency. Finally, you may want to have the phone plugged in during the update, or you'll be stunned how much battery power that one-hour process will take. I was down to 25 percent at the end of the update.
