What happens when the pandemic and flu season collide? The situation has doctors concerned.“You could possibly have both and we don’t know how bad it will be if you have both,” said Dr. Richard Pan, a pediatrician and California state senator. “Many physicians and scientists are concerned because both of the viruses attack your lungs and heart.”California already had its first flu death this season and Pan is pleading with the public to get the flu shot this year. It's unknown how someone who had COVID-19 will react with the flu.“Even if they were asymptomatic, will the flu be a lot worse for somebody who already had COVID? Because of the damage COVID already did to the lungs and heart that perhaps the patient is not fully recovered from,” said Pan.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has ordered extra flu vaccines. They're widely available now and it's recommended you get one before the end of October.Normally, vaccine rates for the flu are around 40%. Pan says it should be double that.“If you have someone who is not vaccinated, then they're going to be much more likely to transmit that flu virus to the person that had COVID,” said Pan.Pan also says it's going to be difficult to figure out if you have the flu or COVID-19 or both, without testing.Make sure you isolate if you have any symptoms. You can spread both the flu and COVID-19 before you develop symptoms. It takes two weeks after the flu vaccine to develop antibodies. Some hope the U.S. flu season will be milder because of mask wearing, hand washing, and social distancing. Other counties have seen that. 1601

With flu season underway and COVID-19 sweeping the nation, doctors say boosting your immunity the natural way can reduce your chances of getting sick.Health experts say to start by reducing your sugar intake. According to Dr. Stephen Sinatra, sugar can stifle the activity of white blood cells making it harder for your body to fight against illness. But with the holiday season upon us, fighting the sugar craving won't be easy. Cardiologist Stephen Sinatra suggests satisfying that sweet tooth the healthier way by adding berries to your small slice of pumpkin pie. Berries have bioflavonoids, carotenoids and polyphenols, which support the immune system.Consuming Vitamin C rich foods, such as peppers, broccoli, and oranges, are also essential to avoid respiratory infections. Zinc, found in meat, seeds and nuts, is just as important. According to the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, a zinc deficiency could make battling the virus harder and could lead to a long hospital stay and higher death rates. As for Vitamin D, Dr. Sinatra says it’s like a knockout punch against COVID. But getting enough of it could be a challenge this time of year. With more people at home under quarantine and less sunlight during cold months, Dr. Sinatra recommends at least 2,000 to 5,000 units of Vitamin D3 a day during the pandemic. Finally, take quercetin. It's a bioflavonoid found in onions, black tea and green apples. Also, be sure to get plenty of sleep and exercise. Stepping up your nutrients will put you on a path to boosting your body’s natural defenses. This story originally reported by Stacy-Ann Gooden on PIX11.com. 1639

WICHITA, Kan. (KGTV) -- The NCAA Tournament ended Thursday night for the Aztecs after the team lost to the Houston Cougars 67-65. Rob Gray drove for a wind-milling layup that just trickled over the rim with 1.1 seconds left, and Trey Kell's off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer was no good, giving No. 6 seed Houston a 67-65 victory over San Diego State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night.Devin Watson had just tied the game for the Aztecs with a turnaround 3-pointer, his second in a matter of seconds, when Gray dribbled up floor with 29 seconds left.He allowed the clock to tick down to six seconds before crossing over, scooting under two defenders and scooping up his shot. The layup gave him 39 points and the Cougars (27-7) their first tournament win since 1984.Devin Davis and Corey Davis Jr. added nine points apiece for Houston, which lost two players to fouls down the stretch, and struggled to contain the Aztecs' big front line. 977

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Two specially modified shotguns and ammunition were stolen from Palm Beach Zoo in the hours between late Wednesday and early Thursday.Head of Communications & Public Relations for Palm Beach Zoo, Naki Carter, says someone broke into the zoo and pried open a gun safe that stored the weapons. The shotguns were used by the zoo's "critical response team" in cases of emergency. The zoo is offering a ,000 reward for the return of the weapons. When asked if this was thought to be an "inside job", Carter had no comment. If the perpetrator(s) is caught with the weapons, which require a federal permit, they could face 10 years in prison and a fine.Carter says Palm Beach Zoo has increased security measures since the theft, but will not go into detail as to what those measures entail. 828
