TENINO, Wash. – George Washington’s face may be on U.S. currency, but never on money quite like this.“We've created our own,” said Wayne Fournier, mayor of Tenino, Washington.It’s a town of about 2,000 people, halfway between Seattle and Portland. Using a printing press from the 19th century, Tenino is now printing its own form of currency, made of thin pieces of wood.“We're growing money on trees here,” Mayor Fournier said. “Literally.”It’s called “complimentary currency” or “scrip.” Here’s how it works: using ,000 from the general fund, the city is backing the wooden notes, 400 of them in all, and giving them to town residents in need.“We issue it out to people that have been affected by the pandemic and qualify financially,” Mayor Fournier said. “They can receive up to 0 a month.”In turn, people can spend the wooden money, but only in town, at businesses that signed up to participate in the program. Those businesses can then redeem the wooden money back at City Hall for real U.S. dollars.“I thought it was a really good idea,” said Juan Martinez, of Don Juan’s Mexican Kitchen in Tenino.The restaurant has been around for eight years, but the pandemic affected its bottom line and that of people in town, too. So far, though, the wooden money is getting around.“I've had quite a few people come in and, you know, they hadn't gone out to dinner in a while because they were laid off of work,” Martinez said, “and when they got it, had a few people come in and enjoy lunch with their families and were able to pay with the wooden money.”It’s a currency circulation that the mayor wants to keep going.“The whole idea is just to keep money bouncing around the community,” he said.The town has done this before, back in the 1930s, during the Great Depression.“It was a big hit and it saved the city at the time,” Mayor Fournier said.It’s an old lifeline they hope will keep working again in a new era.City leaders say they have been fielding calls from as far away as Spain, New Zealand and Japan from people interested in their wooden money. The Arizona state prison near Yuma is under lockdown after authorities were able to contain a riot involving hundreds of inmates Thursday night.Inmates reportedly attacked prison personnel around 6:45 p.m local time at the medium-custody Cheyenne Unit of the complex.Officials say around 600 inmates were involved in the disturbance, which included throwing rocks, setting fire to mattresses and other property in the yard and breaking into the prison health unit. ADC response and tactical teams from Yuma, Lewis, and Tucson complexes brought the incident under control around 9 pm., according to a statement from corrections officials.All prison staff are safe and accounted for.The inmates involved are being contained in a fenced recreation yard as ADC investigates. Additional criminal charges are pending for any inmates involved in violent activity.  900

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. -- A Walmart employee called Tarpon Springs, Florida police on Thursday to report a strong odor coming from a van parked in the store's parking lot. The employee told police the older model van had insect activity on the interior of the van's windows and there was a strong smell coming from the van. Police responded to the location and found an older model Ford E-150 van parked at the north end of the parking lot near Tarpon Avenue. When officers entered the vehicle, they discovered a dead person. Detectives have responded to the scene and are conducting a full investigation into the death. The identity of the deceased is unknown at this time.  701

Talking with teens about drugs and alcohol may not be the easiest thing. But research shows kids whose parents do, are 50 percent less likely to abuse those substances. One family is going beyond the talk, and developing a plan we can all learn from.Snack time at the Wardell house is more than a time to eat. It's also a chance for Karla Wardell to check in with her kids. And while these topics may be light ones, conversations on heavier topics don't look much different.  Wardell says she started talking with her teenage children, Brandon and Elissa, about drugs and alcohol when they were young. She says she's honest with them about the reality of drugs and alcohol, and pushes them to think about how they might react if around them. And if there's a situation her kids can't get themselves out of, the Wardell's have developed a plan for that.  "We have a little code word they can text or a call," Karla Wardell says. "And if they text and they write something like what time do you want me home but if home is all capitalized that is their SOS to me like I want to come home."  Elissa Wardell has had to send her mom a text like that, and even uses a way to delete it to be even more discreet.  "Your friends won't be able to see that you have said I want to go home," Elissa Wardell says. "They will just think that your parents are being mean and you can go home."  Steve Martinez works with Speak Now, a campaign that encourages parents to have conversations with young ones about the dangers of substance use.  "If a parent feels that it is wrong for example to binge drink or use substances, that teens are three times less likely to use," Martinez says.  Martinez says conversations can happen anywhere, and can start when a child is as young as nine. He says approach matters, and scare tactics don't work.  What does work? Building trust. One conversation at a time."The bond that parents have with their kids is it's really special," Karla Wardell says. "And we need to recognize that and our kids will listen to us if we have the courage to talk with them." 2126
