Former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who served as sheriff of Arizona's Maricopa County’s from 1993 to 2017, filed a libel lawsuit against The New York Times and a member of its editorial board Tuesday evening. Court documents obtained by show Arpaio is suing The Times and Michelle Cottle for the publication of Cottle’s August 2018 op-ed titled, “Well, at Least Sheriff Joe Isn’t Going to Congress - Arpaio’s loss in Arizona’s Senate Republican primary is a fitting end to the public life of a truly sadistic man.” In the opinion piece, Cottle calls Arpaio’s “24-year reign of terror” “medieval in its brutality,” and makes reference to the former Sheriff’s controversial practices, which include the creation of Tent City, the implementation of chain gangs, and forcing prisoners to wear pink underwear. The Times published Cottle’s op-ed after Arpaio was defeated by Martha McSally in the primary race for Jeff Flake's Senate seat.In the complaint, filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Arpaio’s team noted,  “While the Defamatory Article is strategically titled as an opinion piece, it contains several false, defamatory factual assertions concerning Plaintiff Arpaio.”A complaint within the lawsuit states Arpaio plans to run for Senate in 2020. The publication of Cottle's op-ed may prevent a successful run for Arpaio, according to court documents. "Plaintiff Arpaio’s chances and prospects of election to the U.S. Senate in 2020 have been severely harmed by the publication of false and fraudulent facts in the Defamatory Article," the lawsuit notes. "This also harms Plaintiff financially, as his chances of obtaining funding from the Republican establishment and donors for the 2020 election have been damaged by the publication of false and fraudulent representations in the Defamatory Article."Arpaio is seeking 7,500,000 in damages, as well as attorneys’ fees and costs. For years, Toys "R" Us was an American success story.Now the discount toy retailer is in its final chapter. The company filed for bankruptcy in September. On Wednesday, Toys "R" Us told employees that it would close or sell all its stores in the United States.It's an ignominious end for the company that was once the toy industry's powerhouse. In the second half of the 20th century, just after the Baby Boom, Toys "R" Us grew into a dominant retail chain thanks to its low prices and a knack for keeping the nation's hottest toys in stock."Toys 'R' Us, Big Kid on the Block, Won't Stop Growing," a Wall Street Journal headline blared in 1988.It all started in 1948, when Charles Lazarus, age 25, opened a baby furniture store called Children's Bargain Town in Washington, D.C. He knew Americans returning from World War II were starting families and needed somewhere to stock up on nursery decor.But before long, Lazarus discovered that the real money was not in cribs, but in toys.Toys break, or go out of fashion — which means parents need to go to the store more often, Toys "R" Us explains in its online company history.In 1957, Lazarus opened his first store stocked only with toys. It was modeled after a supermarket, with items stocked high on shelves and a wide assortment of choices. He named it Toys "R" Us — with a backwards "R" in the logo that was supposed to look it it was drawn by a kid.The mainstays of the iconic Toys "R" Us marketing campaigns emerged over the next two decade. "Each product is tracked by computer, and that helps the chain spot hot-selling items weeks before most competitors do."Lazarus also kept his stores stocked with a variety of baby products, like diapers and formula, so shoppers would have a reason to shop year-round.Things started to go awry in the 1990s. In 1994, Lazarus stepped down as CEO. But the biggest change came when Walmart started offering lower prices on diapers, according to toy industry analyst Jim Silver.While Toys "R" Us remained a destination during the holidays, it lost regular shoppers during the rest of the year."That changed everything," Silver said.In 2001, Toys "R" Us opened a flagship store in Times Square, complete with a 60-foot Ferris wheel and a life-size Barbie dollhouse, in order to juice enthusiasm. But the costs were "astronomical," Silver said.On shaky ground, Toys "R" Us was taken private by a group of private equity firms in 2005. Bain Capital, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Vornado Realty Trust bought the company for .6 billion.Saddled with debt, the store was not able to pour enough money into necessary, innovative changes. By the time Amazon ruled the online shopping ecosystem, Toys "R" Us was lightyears behind — despite an early partnership with Amazon in 2000. The agreement to jointly sell toys online ultimately went sour and ended after a court fight."Walmart had a better online experience. Target had a better online experience," Silver said. "They lost online and they didn't adapt."In 2015, Toys "R" Us closed its Times Square mega-store. It was the beginning of the end.A dismal 2017 holiday season was the death knell. Firefighters battling the West Coast wildfires say this year's blazes are some of the worst they have ever seen.They say the fires are taxing the human, mechanical and financial resources of the nation's wildfire fighting forces to an extraordinary degree. And half of the fire season is yet to come.Heat, drought and a strategic decision to attack the flames early combined with the coronavirus to put a historically heavy burden on fire teams.Justin Silvera is a 43-year-old battalion chief with Cal Fire, California's state firefighting agency. He says new fires break out before existing ones are contained.“There’s never enough resources,” said Silvera, one of nearly 17,000 firefighters in California. “Typically with Cal Fire we’re able to attack — air tankers, choppers, dozers. We’re good at doing that. But these conditions in the field, the drought, the wind, this stuff is just taking off. We can’t contain one before another erupts.”According to The Associated Press, fire crews have been summoned from at least nine states and several other countries, including Canada and Israel. Mutual agreements for agencies to offer assistance have been maxed out at nearly all levels of government."We know that there's really nothing left in the bucket," Washington State Forester George Geissler told The Associated Press. "Our sister agencies to the south in California and Oregon are really struggling."Western states have been seeking assistance in fighting wildfires since mid-August. On Aug. 19, California, Gov. Gavin Newsom asked for assistance from other states in fighting fires, saying that resources were already "stretched." Since then, hundreds of thousands of acres have forest has continued to burn.The Associated Press also reports that experts believe the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the historic fire season. In June, U.S. Forest Service Chief Vickie Christiansen issued a directive to aggressively fight all fires, hoping to minimize the need for large groups of firefighters before blazes got out of control.However, experts say that the directive allowed forest fire fuels that would have typically already burned to build up, allowing the fires to spread more quickly in recent weeks.Officials hope that cooler, wet weather in the Pacific Northwest could assist firefighters in containing blazes in the coming days. Former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden were reunited Monday, when they went out for lunch at a Washington, DC, bakery.Obama and Biden spent about 45 minutes at Dog Tag Bakery in Georgetown. The bakery runs a fellowship program, now in its eighth class, that acts as a "living business school" for veterans, military spouses and military caregivers, Dog Tag CEO Meghan Ogilvie told COVER/LINE. Professors from Georgetown University teach fellows, who can earn a certificate of business administration from Georgetown University's School of Continuing Studies.Ogilvie said she found out about six minutes before Obama and Biden arrived that they were coming. She gathered the current 13 fellows and said they would have a team meeting and surprised them when the 44th President of the United States and his Veep walked in.Obama and Biden met the fellows, took selfies with them and talked to them about their future business plans for about 20 to 30 minutes. They also grabbed a bite to eat.If it wasn't for the fact they were once leaders of the free world, "it would seem like two friends coming together to have lunch," Ogilvie said.They ordered ham and gruyère sandwiches. Obama got a side salad, and Biden got a slice of mint basil blueberry cake.Obama told Ogilvie he was aware of "the good work you've been doing" at the bakery, she said. Before long, photos of Obama and Biden at the bakery began circulating online, drawing a crowd. FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) -- Police in Flagstaff say a group of teens killed a 23-year-old man after he allegedly inappropriately touched one of the girls involved in the killing.Flagstaff police said on Friday that Jaron James was found dead on Sept. 7 and that four teens, including two who are underage, have been arrested.Police say James was killed at a motel and that the suspects knew him. They say the group attacked James after he touched one of the suspects, a 16-year-old girl from Flagstaff.Eighteen-year-old Lawrence Sampson-Kahn and 19-year-old Kayson Russell are among the four arrested.
