DEL MAR (KGTV) — For the first time, researchers set up receivers along San Diego coast with the ability to record when sharks are near. California State University Long Beach spent Wednesday working with Del Mar lifeguards as they dropped three receivers along the coast and tried tagging sharks nearby. Unfortunately, no sharks were tagged.Chris Lowe, with Shark Lab, tells 10News, “we just got money from the state to expand it throughout all of California.” They have receivers from Avila to the Mexico border but none located between Oceanside and La Jolla."This is a big gap for us,” Lowe says. Each receiver collects data from any tagged shark within 500 yards of the device. The receiver logs the time, date and is able to identify the exact shark based on the scanned tag. For a decade, CSU Long Beach has been studying the patterns of sharks and working to collect enough data to eventually predict where sharks will be at certain times of the year. 967
DENVER (AP) — Tommy Pham hit a three-run homer in the ninth after Fernando Tatis Jr. tied it with two outs and the San Diego Padres rallied for an 8-7 win over Colorado to spoil the Rockies’ home opener. Kirby Yates surrendered a run-scoring single to Charlie Blackmon and then walked Ryan McMahon with the bases loaded to make it 8-7. He was taken out for Drew Pomeranz, who got pinch-hitter Chris Owings to fly out and end the game. The Padres and Rockies face off again on Saturday at Coors Field at 5:10 p.m. 683

DENVER (AP) — The North American Aerospace Defense Command used to monitor for signs of a nuclear attack. But this year, the command is making sure the coronavirus won’t sideline the fabled Santa Claus from delivering gifts around the world. This is the 65th year for the U.S.-Canadian operation that has tracked the jolly old man since a child mistakenly called the base asking to speak to Santa. Air Force Gen. Glen D. VanHerck says he's confident that Santa Claus knows how to stay safe. He says even a pandemic won't disrupt Santa’s schedule. VanHerck says he hopes that tracking Santa will bring happiness to families during an unprecedented holiday season. 670
