MUNCIE, Ind. -- Muncie area hospitals are on the lookout for a woman accused of pretending to be pregnant to gain access to labor and delivery floors.Ball Memorial Hospital reported they are working with police and have alerted all personnel to be on the lookout for the woman.It is unclear at this time if there is any surveillance video of the woman and the hospital would not say whether they have identified her.Ball Memorial Hospital released the following statement Thursday:“While no related criminal activity has taken place or charges have been filed, hospital police, leadership and team members remain vigilant. The safety and the very best care of patients and guests are always the highest priority.”Community Health North Hospital, which delivers the most babies in Indiana, said it’s critical to run regular drills to make sure no one has access to newborns that shouldn’t.“As soon as a baby is delivered we put identification on a baby which does include a security tag,” said Jamie Phillippe, Director of NICU/PICU/Pediatrics at Community Health North. “Here down in delivery they could have anywhere from 70 to 80 moms and babies.”Phillippe said the maternity and newborn ICU units are locked down at all times and no one that isn’t supposed to be down there gets in but when situations like this arise they make sure to share the information with all staff members so everyone is aware and they pay constant attention to video feeds around the building.  1501

Months after COVID-19 forced an unprecedented global shutdown that set the stage for historic job losses, things are starting to go back to normal.Unemployment appears to be improving – at least at surface level. The monthly unemployment rate declined in May and the economy added an estimated 2.5 million jobs that month.But there’s a disparity these reports don’t highlight – what unemployment looks like right now for people of color.In May, unemployment was highest among Latinx workers, at 17.6%. In the same month, Black unemployment reached 16.8%, its highest level in a decade. Asian unemployment also rose in May, to 15%.You start to see disparities when you bring in white unemployment. In May, it dropped 2.5% to 12.4%. That’s the biggest monthly drop – and lowest monthly rate – of any group.Experts say career distribution can help explain some of the disparities. People of color fill a disproportionate number of jobs in retail and hospitality. Those jobs were some of the first to be cut as the new coronavirus spread.But people of color also fill a big portion of jobs like grocery clerks and cooks. Those jobs, which are considered “essential” right now, traditionally don’t pay much and have been considered most expendable in past economic downturns.With Black workers earning the lowest median income of any group in the United States, experts worry any cuts to the currently “essential” workforce would have a disproportionate impact.Beyond the pandemic, numbers show Black unemployment is consistently higher than white unemployment. There’s been progress, though. The gap has been narrowing since the great recession and reached a low point in late 2019. 1686

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Muncie, Indiana animal shelter is asking for the public’s help after they found 43 cats in a U-Haul.In a tweet, the shelter says they were called to help Muncie Police Department Officers around 11 p.m. Friday after they found the cats in the U-Haul with temperatures below 20 degrees.The shelter says a lot of the cats were pregnant and some had hernias. 382

Millions of stimulus checks have gone out, but there are people still wondering where their checks are. Some might have thrown them out by mistake, but a local woman tells us she’s been getting the runaround about her check after complaining to the post office. Here’s how you can rebound from possible lost or stolen stimulus money.“I’m very hurt. I feel very let down,” said Racquel Hill from Warrensville Heights. She has no idea where her stimulus check is. “It’s something that I could still use. My children could use. And that I am in need of, she told us.She’s a single mother of two baby girls.“From February basically up to now, I’ve been without.”Hill showed us the IRS website reported her check was mailed on April 24. However, she also has a different address now. She had been living in Mayfield Heights.“Every time I contact (a representative of the Mayfield Heights Post Office), she tells me a different story,” said Hill. “She tells me, ‘Oh, we never received it. Then, she tells me it’s been forwarded back to the IRS. Then, she tells me it’s been forwarded to Warrensville Heights Post Office.”A spokesperson for the post office would not confirm if the overall USPS has received any similar complaints here or around the country.“Then where is it? Is someone stealing the check? Did someone mishandle the check?” questioned Hill. “I want to know what happened to the check and how many other people this has happened to.”“I know sometimes people aren’t really sure…what that check is,” said Scott Balfour. He investigates possible mail fraud through the USPS Office of Inspector General in Cleveland. He told us his office has had less than a handful of complaints about possible lost or stolen checks. “As an investigator what we are able to do is make contact with an investigator from the Treasury Department,” explained Special Agent Balfour. “They will let us know if that particular check has been cashed by someone it wasn’t intended for.”Hill told us Balfour is looking into her stimulus check problems. Meanwhile, The IRS within the last week or so sent out a warning about COVID-19 and stimulus check fraud. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man who was apparently shot with an arrow was found dead in National City Monday afternoon.According to National City Police, the incident was reported at around 2:30 p.m. near the 1800 block of Wilson Avenue.After the shooting, the suspect reportedly called police saying he shot an arrow into a man. The suspect told police there was a fight before the shooting.NCPD Captain Alex Hernandez said the suspect showed officers where the victim was located. The victim was found in what appeared to be a homeless encampment and pronounced dead at the scene."We were able to recover the bow and some other items that were nearby as evidence," said Hernandez.Police say a woman who was believed to be with the two men at the time of the shooting was questioned. All three are believed to be transients living in the encampment where the incident took place, police say.While the deceased man was not identified, National City police identified the suspect as 39-year-old Miguel Venegas; he was booked into jail on a suspicion of murder charge. 1080
