FLINT, Mich. – In a gesture of solidarity, a Michigan sheriff joined a crowd demanding action against police brutality and marched side by side with the peaceful protesters. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson was caught on video joining the crowd that was marching in Flint Township in honor of George Floyd, the black man who died after an officer knelt on his neck during an arrest in Minneapolis. Before the march began, Swanson addressed the demonstrates and said his officers wanted to be with them.“I took my helmet off, laid the batons down,” said Swanson to cheers. “I want to make this a parade, not a protest.”The sheriff wanted to make the point that his officers cared for their community and they understood many wanted to have their voices heard. “These cops love you. That cop over there hugs people,” he said. “So, you tell us what we need to do.”The protesters carried signs and chanted as they made their way by foot and in cars through the community’s business district. They then marched to police headquarters, where they demonstrated briefly. While there, police and protesters talked and bumped fists. The peaceful protest lasted several hours."We can't forget on all our police cars across the nation it says, 'protect and serve.' That means all people, that means all people deserve the same dignity,” 1340

GENEVA, Switzerland – The World Health Organization has declared the ongoing coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. "WHO has been assessing this outbreak around the clock and we are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction," said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO. “We have therefore made the assessment that #COVID19 can be characterized as a pandemic”By definition, a pandemic is an outbreak of a disease that occurs over a wide geographic area and affects an exceptionally high proportion of the population.Ghebreyesus says the number of COVID-19 cases outside of China has increased 13-fold and the number of affected countries has tripled. “There are now more than 118,000 cases in 114 countries and 4,291 people have lost their lives,” said Ghebreyesus. In the days and weeks ahead, experts expect to see the number of cases, the number of deaths and the number of affected countries to climb even higher. "Pandemic is not a word to use lightly or carelessly,” said Ghebreyesu. “It is a word that, if misused, can cause unreasonable fear, or unjustified acceptance that the fight is over, leading to unnecessary suffering and death"Ghebreyesu says describing the outbreak as a pandemic doesn’t change WHO’s assessment of the threat the virus poses or what the organization is doing to combat it.According to Ghebreyesu, some of the hardest hit countries are seeing some progress in the fight against the virus."Of the 118,000 COVID-19 cases reported globally in 114 countries, more than 90 percent of cases are in just four countries, and two of those China and South Korea, have significantly declining epidemics," said Ghebreyesu. HARTFORD, Conn. – The nation's two largest teachers unions are calling on schools to revise or eliminate active shooter drills. The American Federation of Teachers and National Education Association issued a report Tuesday with the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety Support. They assert that simulating a school shooting can harm the mental health of students and educators. They say schools should instead concentrate on training teachers to respond to emergencies. Jean-Paul Guilbault, the chief executive of the Alice Training Institute, which runs active shooter drills, says they are effective when done appropriately. 641

Former Defense Secretary Harold Brown, who served under President Jimmy Carter, and wore many hats as an educator and a nuclear physicist, has died. He was 91.Brown played a crucial role in the Carter administration's effort to end the Iranian hostage crisis, and described the botched 1980 rescue attempt as the biggest regret of his career."The failure to rescue the U.S. hostages still haunts me," Brown wrote in his memoir "Star Spangled Security," according 475

Former FBI Director James Comey counts himself among the many people questioning why special counsel Robert Mueller did not make a determination on whether President Donald Trump obstructed justice."I'm not prejudging it -- I'm just saying it doesn't make sense on its face, and so I have a lot of questions," Comey said in an interview that aired Wednesday on NBC's "Nightly News."He said he felt both Mueller and Attorney General William Barr "are entitled to the benefit of the doubt," but that he was surprised and confused by the choice.Mueller, Comey's predecessor as head of the FBI, was appointed to lead a special counsel investigation in the wake of Comey's firing, and a portion of the probe was dedicated to investigating if Trump had committed obstruction of justice. But 795
