Three people are currently battling for custody of the remains of infamous cult leader Charles Manson, who died in Bakersfield, California late last year.Jason Freeman, who claims to be Manson's grandson; Michael Brunner, who claims to be Manson's son and oldest living relative;, and Michael Channels, who was Manson's penpal for 30 years have all made claims to Masons's remains.Manson was hospitalized at Mercy Hospital Downtown last November before he eventually died. His body has been in the possession of Kern County since. In January, it was decided the fate of his remains would be decided through Kern County Superior Court. At the last hearing on Jan. 31, both Manson's son's and grandson's attorneys hinted at possibly joining forces. There have been multiple court hearings over who can lay claim to Manson's body and another to determine who will end up with his estate. Top officials tapped with developing, approving and distributing COVID-19 vaccines say they're on track to begin distributing the first doses in the coming weeks and plan to vaccinate 100 million Americans by the end of February.In a press conference on Wednesday, Health and Human Services Director Alex Azar said the FDA would meet on Dec. 10 regarding Pfizer's vaccine candidate and on Dec. 17 regarding Moderna's vaccine candidate. The agency is currently reviewing both for Emergency Use Authorization.Both companies have been manufacturing doses of their candidate for several months in the hopes of ramping up supply in case of approval. Hundreds of thousands of doses of both doses will be ready for delivery as soon as approval is granted.Dr. Moncef Slaoui, Operation Warp Speed's chief advisor, stressed that the data from the vaccine trials are "clear" and shows both candidates to be safe and effective.According to Gen. Gus Perna, the operation's chief operating officer, the Department of Defense is prepared to deliver several million doses of both Pfizer and Moderna's vaccine upon approval. There was a rare sight at San Diego City Hall on Tuesday.A local developer pitched a massive mixed-use complex with hundreds of homes to the council, in front of mostly empty seats. "Our focus has always been on creating a sense of place for the entire neighborhood," said builder Gary Levitt, of Sea Breeze Properties.Sea Breeze Properties plans to transform a 72-acre site just south of the 56 into hundreds of homes, plus offices, retail, and even a hotel and movie theater. The project, Merge 56, didn't get a single 'no' vote from multiple community planning groups.Some nearby residents even came to the meeting to support the project. But even with that backing, it still took five years just to get the council's unanimous vote of approval Tuesday.Levitt said the delays come from regulations, including environmental impact reports, and cost his company an extra million - about 15 percent of that in city processing fees.Councilman Scott Sherman said that is one reason we're in housing crisis. "At the end of the day all the prices get passed along to the consumer and the price of housing," Sherman said. Levitt said ideally it would take two years for a project to get approved. "It's a very expensive process and at the end of the day you're just playing with paper," he said. The project includes 242 new homes, condos, and apartments. Additionally, 47 of them will be affordable units. Two environmentalists did raise concerns about local impacts but the council didn't acknowledge them in their deliberation. Levitt's work, however, isn't done.
