SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A fire ripped through a Lakeside strip mall late Tuesday evening, but no injuries were reported.The fire broke out just after 11 p.m. in the 9700 block of Winter Gardens Blvd, near Woodside avenue.When firefighters arrived on scene the blaze spread to several businesses. Most of the damage was to the outside of the buildings but thick black smoke did get inside.By 11:30 p.m., the flames were knocked downNo injuries were immediately reported.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 518

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A great-grandmother is pleading for the return of her late husband's ashes, after the theft of a truck belonging to the moving company she hired.A frustrated Dee Randolph spoke to 10News from her new home in Tennessee. On a day in May, Mission Transportation - the company she hired for the move - loaded up her belongings at her home in La Mesa. That same night, or early the next morning, the truck was stolen from near a parking lot in the 6400 block of Federal Boulevard in Lemon Grove. "I was just in shock. How do you react? I was stunned," said Randolph.Weeks later, the truck was found abandoned outside a vacant building near Escondido.Three-quarters of her possessions were gone, including furniture, clothing and dozens of pieces of jewelry. Also missing was an urn holding the ashes of her husband David, who passed away from a stroke in 2014."I used to carry him with me for about a year. When I was in the kayak, I brought him with me ... made me feel like he was still with me ... Now I don't feel like he's here. I feel like he's gone," said Randolph.Also stolen was a wooden sculpture and several other art pieces crafted by her husband, a millennial print of a Rembrandt etching valued at several thousand dollars, and a detailing of her lineage inside a bible that's been in her family for several centuries."I was passing it onto my grandsons to continue that history," said Randolph.That history is lost for now, along with a piece of Randolph's heart. "You don't think when you hire a moving company that you will lose everything," said Randolph.The monetary loss will be covered by the moving company and her own homeowner's insurance. Randolph hired a private investigator, who obtained surveillance video showing a white van pulling up to the moving truck. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) -- Opening statements will likely begin Thursday morning in the retrial of Kellen Winslow II, who is charged with raping a woman in Encinitas and an unconscious teen in Scripps Ranch in 2003. Winslow was previously convicted of raping a homeless woman and exposing himself to two others. After a week of deliberations, the Vista jury found Winslow guilty of raping a woman in Encinitas and exposing himself to two others, but deadlocked on eight other charges. Those charges included rape and kidnapping in connection with two other women. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A .2 million judgment against the San Diego Rock ‘N’ Roll marathon over injuries suffered by an elite wheelchair athlete was recently upheld.Craig Blanchette was born without legs due to a birth defect, but that has not stopped him pursuing his passions. He is a wheelchair racing champion. At 20-years-old, he won a bronze in the 1988 Summer Olympics and over the years, set more than 20 world records. “Wheelchair racing just fit me,” Blanchette said. He eventually took a break to compete in hand cycling, but was preparing to return to wheelchair racing. Court documents said he did everything to prepare for the 2014 Rock ‘N’ Roll marathon, including studying the course map and virtual tour several times. Documents state Competitor Group, which operates the marathon, eliminated a lane on Eleventh Avenue an hour before the race—a move that changed Blanchette’s life. “I wasn’t racing recklessly. I was definitely going to make the corner,” Blanchette said. “When it’s too late to do anything about it, I realized the course had been narrowed by 13 feet. It was significant.” Blanchette was not aware of the change and crashed into a car. He was going more than 20 miles per hour at the time, according to court documents. “It’s the crash that ended my career,” Blanchette said.He filed a civil case against Competitor Group. A jury ruled in his favor and the Court of Appeal recently upheld a judgment of .2 million in his favor. “It’s the best they can offer because they can’t me my racing career back,” he added.It was bittersweet for Blanchette, who had to undergo surgery and several months of recovery. “The doctors basically told me that if I went back to racing and I injured it again, they wouldn’t be able put it back together like I did the first time,” he said.Blanchette now hand cycles, which uses different muscles, and spends time helping other athletes. He has been part of the National Wheelchair Sports Camp for years and this year, Blanchette’s attorney is also helping out. “This case was very eye-opening for me,” said attorney Russel Myrick. “With the proceeds from the case, we intend to make big improvements to the camp and we’re really looking forward to working with the kids.” They hope this ruling will help other athletes with disabilities. “They didn’t accommodate for us in the way that we deserved,” Blanchette said. “[You] want to treat us the same in value, but not the same in function.” Competitor Group did not return Team 10’s request for comment. 2529
