(KGTV) - A Jamul couple made a heartbreaking return to what remains left of their home, destroyed by the Valley Fire.Late Saturday afternoon, Irving and Anita Beeman shot cellphone video from the back yard of their home on West Boundary Truck Trail."The smoke blowing straight above our our house, so I knew we were in big trouble," said Irving Beeman.The fire seemed a good four to five miles away, but that changed quickly."In about 15 seconds, it went over a quarter mile ... The flames were between 100 and 200 feet tall," said Irving.Irving scrambled to a ridge and peered over."Looked like waterfall of fire from the top of the ridge to the bottom of the valley. A wind vortex or something took it straight down to valley floor," said Irving.Anita left first, while Irving left in another vehicle soon after. The couple only had time to load up what amounted to a truck bed of belongings. A photo taken by Irving shows his property, as it began burning."We watched it catch fire and then tore out of there," said Irving.The next day, the couple got back to their property, and their fears were realized. Their home of 20 years was no more. One of their trucks and their son's van were destroyed."Just devastating. Still had been holding out hope," said Anita.Buried under the remains of their home, were boxes containing the ashes of Anita's parents. In the rush, it didn't get packed."In the middle of night, you think of things that are gone, things you couldn’t save," said Anita."I would wake up and saw her crying. Just hugged her. Not much you can say. Just hug each other," said Irving.They'll continue to lean on each other, as they begin their long road to recovery."It'll be real tough to rebuild, but we’re going to," said Anita."We’re very grateful we’re alive and have a chance to rebuild," said Irving.The couple's home was insured. It's part of a plan to redevelop the former 76 gas station at Pearl Street and Eads Avenue in downtown La Jolla, a station infamous for charging among the highest gas prices in the city. The station has been closed for about the last two years."It's a blighted area on Pearl," said developer David Bourne. "It needs to be developed, and I think this is the highest and best use."Bourne is proposing to turn the former station into a mixed-use development that could serve as an example of future transit-oriented projects. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — More and more women are seeking help getting pregnant. With that help has come an increase in the number of women freezing eggs and embryos.The Centers for Disease Control recently released preliminary numbers for 2016, the latest data available for assisted reproductive technology, or ART, because it takes two years to finalize births and verify data.The data was collected from 463 reporting clinics in the US.There were 76,930 babies born in 2016 as a result of fertility treatments. About 11,000 of those were sets of twins.Of the 263,577 ART cycles (the two-week process of stimulating egg production with the intent to transfer embryos), 65,840 were done so to freeze all resulting eggs or embryos for future pregnancy attempts.The CDC points out the use of assisted reproductive technology is relatively rare, “its use has doubled over the past decade” resulting in 1.7 percent of all infants born in the United States every year are conceived using ART.One of the reporting clinics is Midwest Reproductive Center in Olathe, Kansas.Dr. Dan Gehlbach started the practice in 2004 and has been a reproductive endocrinologist for 25 years. He says he’s moved to almost exclusively freezing all embryos.“Once the data was clear that transferring an embryo soon after egg retrieval was not the optimum time for a transfer, and we could freeze an embryo and allow the uterus to recover from all the hormonal changes that had occurred, and then place the woman on a much lower dose of hormones that just prepare her uterus for an embryo to attach…then we were able to show an improvement in pregnancy rates by transferring a single embryo that had been frozen and thawed verses where we used to transfer two fresh embryos almost routinely,” said Dr. Gehlbach.Gehlbach says this is not only increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy, it is also lowering the risk of twins or triplets. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) — Four people were arrested after a 14-year-old was caught smuggling crystal meth through an East County checkpoint.The boy had three bundles of methamphetamine strapped to his body underneath his clothing as he traveled through a State Route 94 checkpoint on Monday night, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. A border K9 patrol of the vehicle during questioning alerted agents to the narcotics.During questioning of the 14-year-old and three other people in the vehicle, a second inspection with K9s was performed. The agents says they found three backpacks in the rear of the vehicle, containing 49 plastic-wrapped packages. The backpacks contained about 50 pounds of methamphetamine.The driver, a 34-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested along with a 16-year-old US citizen and two Mexican national ages 14 and 16. Border agents seized the vehicle and turned over the narcotics and individuals to officers with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area task force.Since Oct. 1, 2019, San Diego Sector CBP says it has seized nearly 1,100 pounds of meth worth nearly .1 million on the street. 1135
