SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A kitchen fire caused an estimated million in damage at a popular South Park restaurant/bar early Wednesday morning.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said crews were called to Hamilton's Tavern & Cafe, located on 1531 30th Street, at around 5:30 a.m. in response to a fire in the establishment’s kitchen area.ABC 10News learned flames burned into the bar’s dining hall and caused some damage to part of a brewery next door.Hamilton’s owner Scott Blair said, “The first thing I thought is I hope everyone’s OK … you’re just like, I hope everyone’s ok because a neighborhood of people living in that building.”As nearby residents were evacuated, crews were able to knock down the flames within 25 minutes, SDFD officials said.Due to the heavy damage to the kitchen, it is believed Hamilton’s Tavern may not be able to operate for the next few months.The restaurant/bar has been shut down since July and was operating out of its sister brewery because it was larger. Hamilton’s had just started operating outdoors this past weekend due to San Diego County being moved into the state’s restrictive COVID-19 purple tier.According to Blair, the kitchen was their lifeline to stay open. With it completely destroyed they’re unsure where they go from here.“The pandemic has been a nightmare,” Blair told ABC 10News. “It’s gonna take more than this to hang it up. We’ll fight, that’s what we do.”SDFD officials said the fire caused an estimated 0,000 in structural damage and 0,000 in damage to its contents.The cause of the blaze is under investigation.No injuries were reported. 1620

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family is hoping surveillance video will help track down the man recorded making himself comfortable in their home.Along Wallsey Drive, the Meduna family got a heart-sinking scare the day before Halloween.Around 8:30 a.m, Megan Meduna and her husband both got a notification that their garage door was open.  Inside the home, a camera was recording an intruder. Meduna says the man had pried open a window screen in the front and forced open a window.  A sound heard in the video is the burglar opening the door to the garage, before he's seen shutting the window he just climbed through. As he puts on his gloves, he walks up to the camera and flips it over."It's just creepy, creepy to see someone in my house sneaking around," said Meduna.By the time police arrived, the man was gone. He got away with only a little bit of cash, but the impact was felt across a neighborhood.  Surveillance video showed him casing the area.  Minutes before the break-in, a neighbor reported seeing the man knocking at her door, then pretending to need directions when she answered the door.  At another home, a ripped screen was found near a side window and an out-of-place brick was discovered outside another window.Neighbors are now wondering if the same man could be linked to other burglaries. A few weeks ago and blocks away, 10News reported on a break-in with a similar MO that left a newlywed couple missing wedding gifts and family heirlooms.  A month ago, there was a another burglary at Meduna's home, in which electronics and jewelry were taken."Feel violated and angry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A homeowner in Clairemont hopes surveillance video is the key to tracking down the intruder who climbed straight through his window, before making off with some family heirlooms.Just off Balboa Avenue around 1:30 p.m. Monday, a man is seen ringing the doorbell at the home of Jeff Howell. After minutes of ringing and knocking, the man is recorded heading for the backyard, where he peers into the patio door and grabs a chair. He then pries open a locked window, steps onto the chair and into the home.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"Just a sense of violation," said Howell.The man is then seen on the phone, possibly with a lookout."You can hear him discussing 'it's safe now' or 'somebody just went by,'" said Howell.Moments later, the man heads straight for the bedroom closet, dragging out a small safe, before carrying it out the front door.By the time Howell saw his text alert, the intruder was gone. The man was in the home for about 15 minutes. Inside the safe: authentication documents for artwork and family heirlooms belonging to his 11-year-old son, including a silver spoon given to him at birth and something from his rodeo-competing great-grandfather, who has passed."He had a prize-winning, silver belt buckle. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A rental forecast out Wednesday predicts that San Diego County's affordable housing crisis will worsen through 2020. According to the University of Southern California Casden Economics Forecast, “even under the best case standard, few units in Southern California are affordable.”By 2020, the report forecasts that average monthly rents will increase by 9 in San Diego County, the highest among all Southern California areas.The report predicts that the San Diego will continue to see economic and population growth over the “foreseeable future” with the economy’s leading sectors continuing to draw a variety of workers.The forecast also shows San Diego’s popularity among older members of the population, including retirees.As a result, housing demand will continue in both the renter and owner-occupied markets, leading rents to increase as vacancy rates remain low.In 2020, the average rent is predicted to be ,187 with a 3.75 percent vacancy rate. 995

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new program at three San Diego-area community colleges is hoping to bridge the gap between minority students and their teachers.The Deber Program at Mesa, Southwestern, and City colleges hopes to encourage more bilingual people to become teachers."We don't have enough people of color in the classrooms," said Laurie Lorence, Teacher Education Director at Mesa College.The program will help recruit bilingual college students who want to become teachers. It will assist them throughout their college careers with applications, transfers, testing, and mentoring."We're hoping a lot of students want to give back to their community and reach down to give them a hand up," said Lorence.Right now, there's a wide disparity between the number of minority teachers and students of color in San Diego.According to the San Diego County Office of Education, 69% of students in local schools are students of color. But only 26.3% of teachers identify themselves as teachers of color. Bridging that gap can help minority students succeed."A student can look up at the teacher and say, 'Wow, if that person's done it, maybe I can too,'" said Lorence.For Karina Vidro, one of the students already in the Deber Program, the help it provides is vital."I know where I want to be, but I don't know all the details in between," she said. "So knowing that someone is going to be there to support me in that direction is fantastic."The Deber Program is funded through a five-year grant from San Diego State University. Lorence says the first few years will focus on Hispanic and LatinX students. They plan to expand to other minority groups after that. 1662
