A Georgia woman and her ex-boyfriend were arguing in her car two years ago when her driver's side window shattered and she blacked out.When she came to, she was in his car, not hers, and they went to his mother's house because she had a head wound.She thought she had been cut by flying glass. But her ex, Jerrontae Cain, had a secret -- he had shot her.Thursday, a judge sentenced Cain, 39, to 25 years in prison for several crimes including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. Cain had been convicted of felony sexual battery in 2010.For a month after the shooting in 2017, the woman stayed at Cain's mother's house, suffering through severe headaches, dealing with memory loss and having trouble when she tried to talk, according to a news release from the Fulton County District Attorney's office. In June that year, a friend took her to the hospital.Doctors at Atlanta Medical Center found a bullet in the back of her skull, one that would have to remain there because trying to take it out could kill her, the DA's office said.Hospital staff alerted investigators, and the woman told them she didn't remember being shot -- she just recalled the window breaking.Cain told police the woman, now 42, had crashed her car into a tree. But detectives found the crime scene inconsistent with his explanation, according to the DA's office.They issued an arrest warrant but Cain was not caught until January 2019, more than a year later, when police showed up at a home in College Park, just south of Atlanta. He hid in an attic during a two-hour standoff until he surrendered, the DA's office said.Cain was also sentenced to five years of probation to be served after his prison term. 1738

A man walking along a partially iced-over Lake Michigan in Chicago needed to be rescued by fast-acting officers and paramedics, the department said on Sunday.The unidentified person's rescue was captured on video, and shared by the Chicago Police on Sunday. In the video, two SWAT officers could be seen reaching the man first after a civilian who witnessed the incident ran to get help. It only took seconds for the two officers to reach into the water and pull the man out of the water.According to the Chicago Police, the person was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. 616

A 30-year-old Spirit Airlines passenger on a flight from Detroit to New Orleans recently got himself banned for life after deciding to take a smoke break in the plane's bathroom.An attendant on Flight NK 985 told a deputy on Tuesday that she saw him take a drag from an e-cigarette and exhale into a bag, said Jefferson Parish Sheriff's spokesman Capt. Jason Rivarde. She admonished him.The St. Petersburg, Florida, resident then got up and headed for the restroom, according to a report filed with the sheriff's office. While he was in the bathroom, the plane's smoke alarm went off.When a deputy met the plane at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, the unidentified passenger denied smoking in the restroom, according to the report. He told a deputy he didn't know smoking was prohibited on flights.The passenger was not arrested but he may never again fly with Spirit: The deputy's report said the company banned him for life."It's a private business that can ban customers at their own leisure," Rivarde said."It's like telling you not to come back to the restaurant. A 27-year-old man has confessed to killing US scientist Suzanne Eaton on the Greek island of Crete, a police spokesperson told CNN Monday.The local man had been detained by police for questioning, after the 59-year-old molecular biologist went missing July 2 while attending a conference.More details are expected to be announced Tuesday, Crete police said.Eaton was attending a conference at the Orthodox Academy when she disappeared, apparently during a run.Last Monday, her body was discovered by two locals deep inside a cave, according to Crete's Chief of Police Konstantinos Lagoudakis.She was found around 60 meters (nearly 200 feet) inside the cave, beneath an air shaft that had been covered by a large wooden pallet. The underground caverns had been turned into a bunker by Nazi soldiers during the Second World War.The police said that Eaton had been asphyxiated. Minor stab wounds were also found on her body, but police said they were not believed to be the cause of her death.
