As we near the end of October, Thanksgiving is less than a month away and Hanukkah and Christmas are both in less than two months. A lot of hotels are taking note, and Paula Twidale with AAA says some are offering deep discounts."You’re seeing this like perhaps 15, 20, 25 percent off hotels in certain regions to entice people to make that commitment. Also, flexible terms and conditions," said Twidale, AAA's senior vice president of travel. She says right now hotels are at about a 50 percent capacity, and some companies are finding ways to keep people traveling."We’ve never had nearly as busy a fall travel season as we have right now. Not even close. We’ve been basically sold out in every mountain town in the US since August," said Brent Handler, founder and CEO of Inspirato. "It works like Rent the Runway or how the original Netflix subscription worked, where as soon as you check out, you can book your next trip. So, you can have one reservation at a time."Through Inspirato Pass, travelers have access to hundreds of destinations around the world with no nightly rates, fees, or other fares."Families will take one of our houses in Cabo for a month or families will move to Aspen for two months," said Handler. But not everyone is ready to travel just yet. Handler says about half of Inspirato's clients aren’t traveling at all."The other half is saying, ‘I’m traveling more than I normally would. I have this opportunity; it might be once in a lifetime working from home. I normally go into an office. I’m going to travel 10 times in the next four or five months,’" said Handler"It’s going to work for some, not for everybody. It may entice people. They’re going to work remote; they may as well do it from a nice location," said Twidale. As for those holiday trips, Twidale says about two-thirds of Americans will travel by the end of this year."It’s not a matter of if people will travel, it’s a matter of when. When they feel comfortable, when they feel safe to do so," said Twidale. 2007

As we shield ourselves in any way possible from the novel coronavirus, there are some parts of the country handling social distancing better than others.“This is a public health problem; it’s not a private health problem,” explained Dr. Bhaskar Chakravorti, who leads the Fletcher Institute for Business at Tufts University. “If I get sick, I could make three other people sick.”Over the past few months, Dr. Chakravorti and his colleagues have been analyzing mobility data from across the country. What did he and his team discover? The top three states who were practicing social distancing the most were New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Nebraska, South Dakota, Arizona were among the worst when it came to practicing social-distancing procedures. Dr. Chakravorti says that has led to higher contagion rates in those areas.“In this post-pandemic moment, each state is going in somewhat a different direction as far as how it's managing the pandemic,” he added. In bigger cities with higher rates of infections, the study found that people responded better to restrictions because they could see the impact the coronavirus was having around them. Dr. Chakravorti hopes public health officials use his findings to make more uniform policies nationwide.“This whole issue of COVID has become a political issue, so even the act of wearing a mask has become a political statement,” he said. “You never want to mix politics with anything. You definitely don’t want to mix it with public health. That’s a dangerous combination.” 1534

As survivors describe the terror-filled moments after a student opened fire at Santa Fe High School, killing 10 people, stories of heroism are coming to light. One of them is about Christian "Riley" Garcia, a student who showed remarkable courage and selflessness during the shooting.Garcia, 15, died Friday while blocking an art classroom door to keep other students safe from the gunshots, said the family's pastor, Keenan Smith."He was holding the door shut when the shooter was trying to gain access into that art room ... the shooter shot through the door, taking his (Garcia's) life," Smith told CNN. But Garcia succeeded in holding the shooter back long enough to allow other students to escape out a back exit to safety. The pastor said he was with Garcia's family Friday night when other students told officials that the teen had saved their lives."He was against the door trying to help his teacher, trying to help another student, and trying to shield the others there," Smith said."That's not what's supposed to happen to a 15-year-old's life that he has to make those decisions. But he made them without even thinking about it, because it was his heart. This is who he was as an individual."Smith who baptized Garcia, described him as a fun-loving kid who loved football and enjoyed being outdoors. He hopes Garcia's brave sacrifice will bring some comfort to his family."This doesn't ease the pain any. It doesn't stop the void that will forever be there, but it does bring a measure of peace," he said.Even though all the victims of the massacre have been identified, Garcia's family has not yet been able to see his body."They (Garcia's family) are praying and hoping that they will be able to be reunited with him and see their son," Smith said.Garcia and his family attended nearby Crosby Church, which held a memorial service Monday night for the slain teen. 1888
