BEIJING, Dec. 26 -- European fashion retailers are accelerating business expansion in China thanks to the nation's increasing number of fashion-conscious consumers. Two companies that opened new outlets in China at a rapid pace this year included Sweden's H&M and Spain's Zara, both retailers of clothing and accessories for adults and youth. H&M is ending this year with a total of 13 new stores, raising the company portfolio in China to 27 outlets, while Zara, opened 33 new stores in China, winding down the year with 60 in total. "In China, new store openings have more than doubled due to strong domestic consumption, which has not been affected by the global financial downturn," said Wu Shuang, public relations manager of H&M China. Globally, H&M store openings are up between 10 percent and 15 percent in 2009, said Wu. "More H&M stores will be set up in China next year, especially in the second-tier cities," he said. H&M, Europe's second largest fast-fashion retailer, entered the Hong Kong and Shanghai markets in 2007 and later expanded its business to second-tier cities like Hangzhou and Ningbo of Zhejiang province. Back in August, H&M sales in Spain, the US and France were down 11 percent over July sales, the fourth consecutive monthly drop. In 2008, average sales revenue at H&M stores in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong was up 23 percent to 59 million yuan, while globally average store sales was 48 million yuan. "We are expecting favorable sales volume in China this year," said Wu, while declining to elaborate further. Strong sales numbers were also recorded at Zara, the leading fast-fashion retailer in Europe. "The Chinese market is attractive with its soaring consumer spending power," a Zara promotion executive said on condition of anonymity. Chinese consumers can expect to see more Zara 'fast fashion' stores in the future," he said. Fast fashion is a term used to describe fashion trends that are manufactured quickly in smaller batches to keep inventories down and allow mainstream consumers to take advantage of current clothing styles at lower prices. This type of quick manufacturing methodology is preferred by large retailers like H&M, Forever 21 and Zara, according to online apparel industry directory, Apparel Search. This access to the latest clothing styles is popular with white-collar consumers in China. "I have been waiting for 30 minutes to try on several pieces of clothing, but the wait doesn't matter. I love to get everything here, and the prices are acceptable," said Liu Dan, a woman in her 20s shopping at one of Zara's Beijing stores. Liu, who works in the public relations department at an international company, said she is also a regular patron of H&M in Beijing. Both H&M and Zara stores are often crowded with local consumers, especially on the weekends.
BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua)-- According to the China-US Joint Statement issued here Tuesday, China and the United States recognize common interests in promoting the peaceful use of outer space and agree to enhance security in outer space. The statement said the two sides believed that China-US cooperation on common global challenges would contribute to a more prosperous and secure world. "China and the U.S. agree to discuss issues of strategic importance through such channels as the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogues and the military-to-military exchanges," said the statement. It said both leaders reaffirmed their commitment made on June 27, 1998 not to target at each other the strategic nuclear weapons under their respective control. The two sides agreed to handle, through existing channels of consultations and dialogues, military security and maritime issues in keeping with norms of international law and on the basis of respecting each other's jurisdiction and interests, said the statement. The statement was signed during President Obama' s first official visit to China between November 15 and 18.

BEIJING, Dec. 16 -- Premier Wen Jiabao will leave for Copenhagen this afternoon, hoping to help seal a fair and effective climate change deal for the planet and secure China's emission rights. Wen will join world leaders, including US President Barack Obama, at the United Nations climate change conference in Oslo for its crucial last two days. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu Tuesday said he is likely to meet state leaders from India, Brazil and South Africa, among others. "China, as a developing country, will make its due contribution to the UN conference," said Jiang. It is not yet known whether Wen and Obama will meet on the fringes of the conference but he has worked the phones relentlessly in the past 10 days, calling as many as 10 world leaders and UN chief Ban Ki-moon in an attempt to secure a workable agreement. Chinese officials have also had important meetings in recent days with negotiators from many countries, including representatives from the United Kingdom and Germany. But during the past 10 days, China and the US have not held any official meetings at any level in respect to climate change. If Wen and Obama do get the chance to meet, they will likely have lots to talk about - the US recently urged China to accept a binding carbon reduction target and said it will not provide financial support to Beijing for climate initiatives. China, meanwhile, called on the US to set a more ambitious target for emissions reduction after Washington promised to cut them by around 4 percent by 2020 from the 1990 base. Developing countries had urged the US and wealthy countries to slash emissions by 40 percent. Experts have called on the US and China to narrow their differences in a bid to ensure the conference is a success. Experts played down the likelihood of the world achieving an ambitious global treaty in Copenhagen but said Wen will defend China's status as a developing country and protect its right to economic expansion in the future. Jiang said the summit has seen both conflicts and achievements. She said the main stumbling block to real progress has been the reluctance of developed nations to hand over funding and technical support to developing nations that they promised in earlier agreements. "If they abandon the principles of the Bali Road Map and the Kyoto Protocol, it will have a negative impact and hamper the conference," Jiang said. She added that China supports the contention that some smaller developing island countries and African countries are in the most urgent need of funding support and should get help first. But the spokesperson stressed that developed countries have a legal obligation to help all developing countries. Huang Shengchu, president of the China Coal Information Institute, said the fact that Wen will be in Copenhagen shows the determination of the Chinese government to secure a good deal. Zhang Haibin, an environmental politics professor at Peking University, said the presence of leaders such as Wen will inject hope that a deal can be found. "It demonstrates the leaders' will to take up the responsibility to rescue the whole of human kind," said Zhang. "However, because of the nature of world politics, the chances of reaching an effective and ambitious agreement, in the end, are slim." John Sayer, director of Oxfam Hong Kong, said many developing countries, including China, India, Brazil and South Africa, have voluntarily offered to cut emissions. China recently said it will reduce its carbon intensity by between 40 and 45 percent by 2020 from the 2005 base level. However, as Zhang pointed out, some US experts, instead of welcoming such offers, have called on China to let international organizations verify that emissions are indeed falling. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Profits of China's state-owned enterprises (SOEs) administered by the central government more than doubled in October from a year ago after months of declines, a senior official said here on Friday. The 132 central SOEs reaped a profit of 79.5 billion yuan (11.64 billion U.S. dollars) in October, up 151 percent year on year, said Huang Shuhe, deputy director of the State-owed Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) at the 2009 Annual CEO Forum. In October, revenues surged by 22 percent from a year ago to nearly 1.16 trillion yuan, Huang said. Their profits during Jan-Oct was 633.8 billion yuan, while revenues amounted to 9.83 trillion yuan during the same period. Huang also noted 24 central SOEs had entered the rank of Fortune 500 companies. "China's companies still face difficulties and great challenges due to roaring raw material prices, huge environmental pressure and rampant protectionism triggered by the financial crisis," he said. He said the companies should further enhance independent innovation, improve corporate governance and accelerate the pace of "go global" to compete with foreign brands.
