BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The value of the gross output of China's auto industry surged 49 percent year on year to 2.086 trillion yuan (308 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half of the year, officials at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Monday.At the same time, total export and import volume jumped 84 percent year on year to 50.66 billion U.S. dollars, according to a MIIT statement posted on its Web site.From January to July, China's auto output and sales both exceeded 10 million units. In July, China's auto output stood at 1.29 million units, up 16 percent year on year, while sales stood at 1.24 million units, up 15 percent year on year, MIIT said.Also, the Chinese government decided in June to extend an auto replacement subsidy program by six months until Dec.31 this year.Begun in June of 2009, the subsidy aims to help get highly polluting vehicles off the road while stimulating automobile consumption.Under the program, consumers who trade-in their used small-and medium-sized trucks and some mid-sized passenger vehicles for a new one are eligible to receive a subsidy of 3,000 to 6,000 yuan.By the end of May, the Chinese government had handed out 1.7 billion yuan in subsidies for 127,000 trade-in vehicles.The subsidy program has boosted domestic automobile spending by 15 billion yuan, according to officials at China's Ministry of Commerce.

NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. She was the smartest kid in the family and the best in her class. BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner, refuted on Monday recent reports online saying China is mulling adjustments of electricity prices, claiming such reports "untrue" .The NDRC said in a statement on its website that recently there were reports online saying the NDRC was studying plans to adjust electricity prices, citing Li Jing, deputy head of the Department of Resource Conservation and Environmental Protection at NDRC. Reports said she has not given the timetable for the plan.The statement further said she never made such remarks to media and the reports were groundless.The NDRC began a rise in the price of electricity for non-residential use by 2.8 fen (0.4 cents) per kwh on average nationwide on November 20 last year, with residential electricity prices unchanged.
