TIJUANA, Mexico. (KGTV) -- Migrants in Tijuana took shelter from the rain Thursday beneath tarps and in tents as shelters remained overcrowded. Photos taken by 10News show makeshift camps where migrants hid in tents while others shielded themselves with tarps as rain drenched the area. Many of the migrants waiting to claim asylum say they’ve lost hope following a clash Sunday in which hundreds of migrants rushed the border in a show of force. THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (KGTV) -- Five people were arrested Sunday in Ventura County after attempting to steal several Apple products from the store inside The Oaks Mall. Around 3:17 p.m. three of the suspects entered the store, all wearing hooded sweatshirts with the hoods up, police said. Once inside the group proceeded to steal Apple iPhones and laptops totaling ,000.00. All three suspects ran out of the store, crashing into and knocking down a female customer. Police said other Apple customers were able to tackle two of the suspects - identified as Donte Sims and Timothy Terry, both of Antioch, California - and keep them down in time for law enforcement arrived. Sims and Terry were arrested on criminal conspiracy and burglary charges. The third suspect got away but was seen getting into a waiting vehicle. Around 3:36 p.m. Sunday, a Ventura County Sheriff patrol deputy caught a vehicle with three people driving over the speed limit on State Route 118 in Simi Valley. Sacramento resident Mona Benoit was arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance. Her passengers, Tynisha Noel of Fresno and Edward Benton of Antioch were arrested after a search of the vehicle revealed that the Apple merchandise stolen from the Thousand Oaks stores was in the vehicle - along with merchandise reported stolen after a burglary in Los Angeles. Thousand Oaks Police Department Detectives identified the group as an organized retail theft crew and are investigating.  1571

TORREY PINES, Calif. (KGTV) - The Massachusetts Institute of Technology just named a minor planet after a San Diego teenager who recently completed research that could assist in future droughts. The Cambridge School freshman Emily Tianshi was also awarded ,000 from here work in the prestigious National Broadcam MASTERS Competition in Washington, D.C.  “I was absolutely shocked,” said the 14-year-old.Tainshi began studying the needles on Torrey Pines as an eighth grader to see how the trees continue to withstand droughts.  She said the needles are uniquely designed to pull moisture from the air and condense it into water for its own needs.Her research won science fairs in San Diego and California.  It earned her an invitation to the weeklong Broadcom MASTERS where she competed with and against students from all over the nation.Tianshi walked away with the second largest prize in the country.She said she wants to continue her research and eventually “turn into an engineering project where I build a device replicating the Torrey Pine Needle.”The teenager said her ultimate goal is to become a Stanford-educated doctor. 1162

They are all the rage right now, they help you find your family's history. "We've always wondered about the validity of my dad's side of the family and their claims about where we're from."Elizabeth Makos is as curious as we all are. "So we think we are half Italian, quarter Czechoslovakian and a quarter polish."She agreed to help put these DNA tests, to the test. Makos gave saliva samples three times, one for Ancestry DNA, 23 and Me and MyHeritage. We sealed them up and sent them off and waited about 6 weeks.We got her results back and here's what Makos thought of them."It's shocking. It is really shocking. I can't imagine what technology they employ to get these results," she said.It's shocking because her results were all over the place. When it comes to Eastern Europe, Ancestry said she was 49 percent Eastern European, but 23 and me and MyHeritage only put the percentage in the high 20s. "When we look at it for example, it says the Balkans here… one says 34 percent and one says 18 percent. A bit of a discrepancy there."Makos thought for sure she is 50 percent Italian. 23 and me and MyHeritage says she's closer to 30 percent. She even had some North African DNA."I would love to know," Makos said about having North African DNA. "I know I get really tan in the summer but I didn't know I got that tan… who knows."The companies don't claim to be perfectly accurate, and use different algorithms. MyHeritage told us in a Skype interview, it maps more parts of the globe that other companies."MyHeritage DNA has 42 ethnic regions with percentages and that's the most on the market, Rafi Mendelsohn, spokesperson for MyHeritage said."Mendelsohn encourages you to read the fine print including what companies might do with your DNA profile after testing."Personal information provided to MyHeritage is never sold, licensed or shared with any third parties, he said." Both Ancestry DNA and 23 and Me say your DNA could be used for medical research by its "partners" after your name has been stripped out. Peter Pitts, a former FDA associate commissioner said, watch out."Companies will tell you that they may sell the information but nobody can find you," Pitts said. "And that's not true. There's been studies done at Harvard for example where a couple of professors got genetic information that was supposedly anonymous and was able to figure out who the people were through very easy mechanisms."He says the results shouldn't be taken as gospel and companies say don't use the findings to make medical decisions. "People need to understand that what they're getting back is an interesting snapshot not necessarily accurate or clinically relevant," Pitts said. Makos said she's telling her friends to use the tests only for fun."I'm glad we did this because I probably would have just taken one test on my own and completely trusted the results. TRABUCO CANYON, Calif. (KGTV) – A large brush fire burning in the Cleveland National Forest’s Trabuco Canyon is spreading quickly Monday afternoon. The fire, dubbed the Holy Fire, was reported around 1:30 p.m. near Holy Jim Canyon and Trabuco Creek roads, according to KABC.The Orange County Fire Authority said the blaze grew quickly from between seven and 10 acres to at least 4,000 by 8 p.m. and is currently spreading at a moderate rate. The Holy Fire is zero percent contained.  511
