KOKOMO, Ind. -- Malachi's Magnificent Lemonade opened Friday and Saturday to raise money for the family of Jacob Pickett, and Indiana sheriff's deputy who was killed in the line of duty earlier this month.Pickett was laid to rest on Friday. He was fatally wounded while assisting with a pursuit and foot chase on March 2.All of the lemonade stand's proceeds will go to Pickett's family. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The man whose wife was found dismembered in two ice coolers has been charged in connection with dismembering and abandoning her body. Justin Rey is accused of abandonment of a corpse and endangering the welfare of a child.  Lenexa police officers went to U-Haul on October 24 to check on Rey and his two children, who were reportedly sleeping in a storage unit. During the investigation, a woman’s remains were found in the unit. Court documents officially identified the remains as Rey’s wife. The documents said Rey’s wife, who family identified as Jessica Monteiro Rey, was found dismembered in coolers. According to court records, Rey was dragging several containers at the U-Haul facility when police spoke to him. Rey told officers his wife died after childbirth several days earlier, and her body was in the two containers. Court documents said Rey told police he spent two days with his wife’s body before dismembering her. Rey told detectives his two children were in the hotel room as he dismembered and disposed of his wife’s body. Prosecutors requested a bond of 0,000 cash. Rey is in custody in Johnson County. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said the case remains under investigation.  1281

JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) — A Jamul woman who lost her home to the Valley Fire says her horses were likely saved thanks to fire retardant sprayed on her property. Shelley Brown still can't believe how fast the flames were moving. By 3 p.m. Saturday, the fast-moving flames were bearing down on her home on Lawson Hills Road."Ashes falling down around me. I could hear the fire burning. It was scary," said Brown.She only had time to try and round up her five dogs. One of them ran off. She also owned horses, including three she had just rescued, but she had no trailer. Faced with an impossible decision, she opened up the corral gate and released them."It was the worst. It was the worst. You don’t know if you’re doing the right thing," said Brown, choking back tears.As she drove off, she says the flames were within a few hundred feet of her home. She drove up a hill. She couldn't stop thinking of her horses."Went to the top and cried for a little while," said Brown.The next morning, Brown got back to the area and discovered her two mustangs in a neighbor's yard."So relieved. The search and rescue team helped me get them," said Brown.Not far away, she found the remnants of her home. Her two-story home of 10 years had been destroyed, along with all her belongings."I felt strange and little bit eerie," said Brown.And then, she felt joyful. About 20 feet from the burned home, standing in her yard, were the three rescue horses."I was shocked, so happy. Didn’t know what to expect. They weren’t singed," said Brown.A closer look around the property one possible reason they survived: a sign of a firefight."They were putting retardant around the edge of the property. I can still see it, and they kind of surrounded where my horses were. I’m guessing that’s what saved them," said Brown.A week after the flames swept the area, Brown is beginning to go through the rubble. She is thankful to fire crews."They are amazing. They saved my animals, and I'm so grateful," said Brown.This week, Brown decided to buy dozens of breakfast sandwiches for firefighters."It's the least I can do," said Brown.Brown, who recently inherited the home, is not yet sure if the insurance covers wildfires.A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help her rebuild. 2257

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will lie in repose on the steps of the Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday and Thursday and will lie in state at the Capitol Building on Friday.In a press release Monday, the Supreme Court said Ginsburg's casket would arrive at the Supreme Court building at 9:30 a.m. ET Wednesday morning. After a private ceremony with Ginsburg's close friends, family and members of the court, Ginsburg will lie in repose on the front steps of the building.The public is invited to pay respects between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. ET on Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET on Thursday.On Friday, Ginsburg will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol on Friday following a formal ceremony, according to a press release from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.A private funeral service for Ginsburg will be held next week at Arlington National Ceremony.Ginsburg died Friday at the age of 87.
