SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Attorney's Office Thursday urged families with guns in the home to practice proper firearm safety while self- quarantining to keep the weapons out of the hands of children.With stay-at-home orders issued at the state and local levels, and schools closed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, City Attorney Mara Elliott's office said gun safety is paramount."When you have guns and children in the home and do not practice safe storage, you are increasing the risk that someone will be accidentally shot," Elliott said. "Children are very resourceful when it comes to locating things their parents thought they'd never find. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties like condominiums and townhomes increased between September and October while home prices decreased, according to data released by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Sales of single-family homes increased from 1,605 in September to 1,644 in October, a 2.4 percent jump. Attached property sales rose 8.8 percent from 820 in September to 892 in October.The increases are a minor rebound after SDAR data showed sales of single-family homes and attached properties fell 25 percent from August to September.Monthly home prices dipped slightly for both single-family and attached properties. Single-family prices fell 0.4 percent from 7,000 to 5,000 while condo and townhome prices fell 2.7 percent from 9,000 to 8,000."The temperature of home prices seems to be cooling, which may lead to a period of calm for the rest of the year," SDAR President Steve Fraioli said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Unified School District officials announced they were making preparations to get children back in schools, but were looking at a timeline of "months, not weeks," before that could become a reality.The district will adopt strict new standards to protect students, staff and the community from the spread of COVID-19 when schools convene in person again, District Superintendent Cindy Marten said during a news conference Monday. The measures are being adopted and developed in consultation with experts from UCSD.In the meantime, the district will begin classes remotely this month.Conditions for reopening local schools will be stricter than state standards, will proceed in phases and will require critical protective measures including mandatory masks, proper ventilation and strict social distancing, according to district leaders.State standards for reopening schools already require a seven-day testing positivity rate of less than 8% and other factors, but the panel convened by San Diego Unified called for adding contact tracing metrics and other factors included in the County of San Diego's designated health triggers."We consulted with the world's leading experts on all aspects of this pandemic because we wanted a comprehensive set of standards to create the safest possible environment for our students and staff," said Dr. Howard Taras, UCSD professor and consulting pediatrician for San Diego Unified. "The strength in these new standards comes precisely from this combination of factors.
