SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Residents will be able to catch the County Administration Building's celebration of the Festival of Lights through Dec. 18.The building will light up nightly in blue and white until Dec. 18, according to the county.The nightly show adds to the list of distanced celebrations San Diegans will enjoy this year due to the pandemic.On Monday, the Del Mar Fairgrounds will host a drive-in concert at 4:30 p.m. as part of The Chabad Centers of San Diego County's Chanukah Spectacular, featuring a Grand Menorah lighting, Chanukah gifts, and musical performances headlined by Israeli pop star Gad Elbaz. Tickets can be purchased online.Hanukkah, which means "dedication," is celebrated by lighting candles on the menorah each day of the 8-day holiday at sundown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County District Attorney's office published an updated 25-year officer-involved shooting analysis Thursday. The study is said to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind released in the country.10News spoke to District Attorney, Summer Stephan at her office in Downtown San Diego. Her office is responsible for investigating all officer-involved shootings in the county. "We look at those reports with an eye as to whether there is criminal liability," Stephan said. Some notable statistics of the newly released study include:-Between 1993 - 2017, there were 451 officer-involved shootings in San Diego County (55% were fatal)-64% of shootings happened within 5 minutes of an officer arriving at the scene-79% of shootings involved a person who had drugs/alcohol in their system or had mental health issues-92% of subjects were armed with a weapon-There are an average of 18 officer-involved shootings per year-Most shootings occurred after traffic stops and domestic violence incidents-Most shootings happened at an alley/street-Most frequent time of day for a deadly encounter was the midnight hour on FridaysArmed with these new stats, Stephan's office is working with local agencies to reduce these shootings. She said it begins with re-training officers and dispatchers, but also teaching citizens how to call 911."What information is dispatch getting, to tell the officers about the individual's mental health condition, their delusions or history of violence or substance abuse?" Stephan said.The DA's office has already started to pass out 911 cards at community events. The card has a mental evaluation checklist when for when citizens call for help.They are also re-training dispatchers to recognize certain situations and ask the right questions so that they can relay accurate information to field officers. Officers are also getting additional crisis management and de-escalating tools to help them reduce the speed in which they react, or use non-lethal force.The idea: Knowledge is power. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Thursday that the city is expected to see a major decline in tax revenue due to the coronavirus. Faulconer said the city usually takes in an estimated 0 million in sales tax throughout the fiscal year. This year, however, the city is expected to lose million in sales tax alone. Similarly, Faulconer added that the city could lose as much as million in tourism tax. The news comes the day after the famous Hotel del Coronado announced its closure amid the COVID-19 pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County has seen two flu deaths and more than twice the unusual number of illnesses so far this season, health officials reported Wednesday. County Health and Human Services officials said the number of confirmed flu cases is more than double the past three-year average, putting this year on par with the severe 2017-2018 flu season. Seventy-seven San Diego County residents died of flu complications last season. Almost 10,000 became ill. More than 235 cases of flu were confirmed by Sept. 28, compared to 67 at this time last flu season. “People should get vaccinated now to avoid getting sick and infecting others,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available throughout the region.” The flu shot is recommended for everyone over six months old. It takes about two weeks for immunity to develop, according to health officials. Anyone who needs the vaccine and does not have health insurance can go to a County public health center.
