LA JOLLA (CNS) - The city of San Diego will close Children's Pool beach Saturday in preparation of harbor seal pupping season, city officials announced Friday.The city began closing the beach in 2014, spurred by environmental activists concerned that beachgoers were disturbing the young pinnipeds. The city has been tied up in litigation for most of the time since then, dealing with suits from a group called Friends of the Children's Pool and other beach access advocates who claimed the closures violated the state Coastal Act and the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.In June of this year, a state appeals court ruled in favor of the city, allowing the closures to continue.At the time, beach access advocates threatened to take the complaint to the state Supreme Court, but the matter hasn't moved that far yet.The city opened the beach in 1932 as a refuge for inexperienced swimmers due to a seawall that keeps out oncoming ocean waves. Harbor seals began convening on the beach in the 1990s and have since used the relatively calm beach area to birth and raise seal pups. California Coastal Commission officials have also suggested that the water is unsafe due to the seals and their excrement, offering another reason for residents to stay away from the beach for the next several months.The beach will be closed through May 15, 2019 to accommodate the seals and their pups. City park rangers and lifeguards will monitor the beach throughout the rest of winter and the duration of spring to keep both members of the public and local wildlife safe. 1567

JOHNSON COUNTY, Kansas — Roughly 5,000 mail-in ballots will be tabulated in Johnson County Friday.The results from the mail-in ballots will be released beginning at 8 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m.The ballots could widen the margin between the two leading Republican primary candidates for governor: Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Gov. Jeff Colyer.When polls closed on Tuesday, slow reporting in Johnson County delayed results. Once the numbers came out the following morning, Kobach led by fewer than 200 votes.Since then, the numbers have been contested, but a 41 Action News county-by-county tally shows Kobach still in the lead.The Secretary of State’s office said it should have all the advance ballots that were mailed in, and any other unofficial election results that were not previously reported on election day.Provisional ballots will be reviewed and counted next week by individual counties. They must certify the results between Monday, Aug. 13 and Monday, Aug. 20.Colyer has asked Kobach to recuse himself from giving local election officials advice. 1081

Johnsonville is recalling more than 100,000 pounds of smoked pork sausage products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service. This comes after three reports of consumers finding pieces of hard, green plastic in the sausages. KIRKWOOD, Calif. -- A 7-year-old boy and his mother were killed when a massive block of snow fell from a roof several feet from the front door of the condo they were staying in Monday. The Alpine County Sheriff’s Department said 50-year-old Olga Perkovic and her son, Aaron Goodstein were returning to the condo after skiing when a trailer-sized block of snow collapsed onto them.Rescuers held an hours-long search at the nearby Kirkwood Ski Resort because the two had boarded a lift in the afternoon.    RELATED: San Diego native who survived NorCal avalanche thanks rescuers?The mother and son were found beneath three feet of snow after a neighbor saw ski gloves nearby. The pair mark the third and fourth skiers to die at California resorts since a powerful snowstorm struck last week.A snowboarder died after falling head first into a deep powder and suffocating at the China Peak resort.Similarly, a snowboarder was found dead Friday after being reported missing during a blizzard at Squaw Valley.The heavy snow also caused an avalanche in Squaw Valley that buried five people. (KGTV) - The Valley Fire claimed the home of a 78-year-old Jamul woman Saturday, along with many of her beloved animals.Cellphone video shot by Pat Menzies shows a thick wall of smoke over a ridge, as he drove his mother Eileen from her home, and away from the fast-moving flames of the Valley Fire on Saturday. Around 2 pm, Eileen says she had only minutes to pack a few things, grab her three dogs and get out of her home on Prairie Drive."We were afraid it was going to come fast, especially since there were no planes, helicopters and fire engines there," said Eileen.Eileen says brushfires have gotten within a half-mile of her home in the past, but this felt different."i just had a gut feeling this one was going to take me out," said Eileen.The fear turned into reality, as Eileen and her daughter discovered when they got back on the property the next day. Eileen's trailer home of 17 years was burned to the ground. All her family heirlooms and almost all her possessions were gone."I felt numb because there was nothing I could do. It's going to be tough to get back online," said Eileen.On the day she learned what happened to her home, the toughest part was her search for her animals, in various pens and cages. Her goat, duck, turkey and three of 12 peacocks, were all found dead."It was sad because they were trapped. The turkey, duck and goats were my babies, and they're not with me anymore," said Eileen.That sadness hanging over Eileen as she begins her road to recovery. She knows it will be a long one."Constantly running into new chapters in your life ... I'm 78 and starting over," said Eileen.Eileen's home was insured.
