BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday chaired a meeting on the national pollution survey and urged more efforts to protect environment.     China launched its latest nationwide pollution survey at the end of 2006.     Li said further work should be done to boost environmental protection and tackle serious pollution problems to boost sustainable development in China and improve people's living standards and quality. BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who headed Monday to the typhoon-hit regions in Fujian and Zhejiang, warned Tuesday that the country faces grim tasks of fighting secondary disasters as a result of Typhoon Morakot. Big floods are still likely to happen as heavy rainfall persists in the south and many rivers continued to maintain high water levels, he said.     More than 20 rivers reported water levels above flood-alarm lines in Zhejiang, Fujian and Anhui provinces. The county seat of Cangnan is flooded on Aug. 10, 2009 in east China's Zhejiang Province. Rainfall brought by typhoon "Morakot", the 8th this year, has flooded the county seat of Cangnan    Hui asked relevant departments to strengthen monitoring of flooding and forecasts of other disasters, so as to relocate people as quickly as possible to minimize casualties.     Typhoon Morakot has left eight people dead and three missing on the Chinese mainland after a powerful landing in east China Sunday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs Tuesday.     As of Tuesday afternoon, Morakot had moved into the Yellow Sea, and would gradually pose less threat to coastal provinces in eastern China.

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to advance cooperation with Turkey in combating terrorism to better fulfill the common task of safeguarding national unification and territorial integrity and opposing separatism, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Sunday.     Yang made the remarks when meeting in Beijing with Turkish State Minister Zafer Caglayan, who paid the visit to China as special envoy of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The visit "indicated Turkey's political will to further its relationship with China," Yang said during the one-hour meeting, adding China attached great importance to promoting the ties with Turkey.     China was ready to strengthen the bilateral relations on the basis of universally recognized norms of international relations, he said. It had a profound political background.     The riot, taking place on July 5 in capital of the northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left 197 people dead and more than 1,600 others injured.     Yang said the "East Turkestan" separatist forces' nature and harm was disclosed in the riot as it seriously jeopardized the lives, property of the Chinese people of various ethnic groups, and the local stability.     The measures taken by the Chinese government to deal with the incident according to law won wholehearted support of the local people of all ethnic groups, Yang said.     Caglayan reiterated Turkey's adherence to the one-China policy and its respect for China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.     The two peoples had a long history of friendship, and the two countries enjoyed "sound cooperation" in areas such as fighting terrorism, Caglayan said, adding Turkey would like to keep close contact with China in this area.     "Turkey will endeavor to develop a strong relationship with China, through deepening bilateral cooperation," he said.     Caglayan, who arrived in Beijing Saturday, also said the success of Turkish President Abdullah Gul's visit to China in June had exerted profound influence on the bilateral relations.     During his four-day stay in China, Caglayan was also scheduled to meet Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and visit Xinjiang, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry.

GENEVA, July 20 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday formally requested the World Trade Organization (WTO) to set up an expert panel to investigate and rule whether a U.S. ban on Chinese poultry imports violates WTO regulations.     The request was made at a meeting of the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body, but it was rejected by the United States according to relevant procedures.     During the meeting, the Chinese delegation reiterated that the U.S. measure is "discriminatory" and "has damaged the lawful rights and interests of China's poultry industry."     "While violating various WTO rules, the measure has severely undermined the stable development of Sino-U.S. trade in poultry products," the Chinese delegation said.     At the heart of the dispute is the U.S. Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009, which contains a section prohibiting any funds being used to facilitate imports of poultry products from China. The act was signed into U.S. law in March, and China filed complaints to the WTO in on April 17.     While Monday's request for the WTO panel was rejected by the United States, China could make a second request at the end of this month. After the second request, the WTO panel will be established automatically.     It usually takes more than half a year for a WTO panel to give its final ruling on a trade dispute.     China and the United States banned imports of each other's poultry products in 2004 following outbreaks of bird flu. They agreed to lift the bans at the Sino-U.S. Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade in 2004.     China did lift the ban but has complained that the United States was not following suit.     China imported 580,000 tons of chicken products from the United States last year, accounting for about 75 percent of total chicken imports.
