UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's progress in meeting a development goal on children's health can serve as an inspiration to other countries working towards the same objective, Dr. Renee Van de Weerdt, chief of maternal, newborn and child health at the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) told Xinhua in an interview Friday.Van de Weerdt said that "the example of China is very encouraging because it means it can be done, even in a very big country with a very big population."China is on track to meet the fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG), one of the eight development targets that the international community has pledged to meet by 2015. MDG 4 requires that each country reduce its rate of mortality for children under age five to two-thirds of what it was in 1990.According to Van de Weerdt, most deaths of children under five take place in the first month of life. After the first month, the most prevalent causes of death are pneumonia and diarrhea.ACHIEVING THE GOAL WORLDWIDEThe international community has been doing "relatively well" in working towards achieving MDG 4, Van de Weerdt said. The UN Interagency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (IGME) stated in their 2011 Report on Levels and Trends in Child Mortality that the number of under-five deaths worldwide has dropped from more than 12 million in 1990 to 7.6 million in 2010."We really continue to see progress," Van de Weerdt said. "The number of children that die every year continues to drop so we are really pleased to see that progress. Unfortunately, the progress isn't sufficient to really be able to say that if we continue at this pace we would achieve MDG 4 by 2015."Some regions, according to Van de Weerdt, like Latin America and parts of Asia are making more headway towards the goal than others that are currently lagging behind.

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Autism can likely develop when low birth weight babies are combined with other factors such as environment and genetic predisposition, new research suggests.Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and School of Medicine identified 1,105 children who weighed less than 2,000 grams at birth between Oct. 1, 1984, and July 3, 1989.Sixteen years later, researchers were able to reach 623 of those children, and used a questionnaire to screen them for autism spectrum disorders. When 189 of the children turned 21 years old, 60 percent of those who screened positive for an autism spectrum disorder, and 24 percent of those who screened negative with the condition. All in all, the rate of autism spectrum disorders among the study participants with low birth weights was five times higher than the general.Autism spectrum disorder makes people have difficulty communicating, difficulty interacting in social situations, and restrictive or repetitive interests, said study co-author Jennifer Pinto-Martin, a researcher in the University. Those with mild autism spectrum disorders, "may only want to talk about one subject," Pinto-Martin said. "They're perfectly functional. They can go to college. They can hold a job." Premature babies are often born with low birth weights, though full-term babies can also have the condition. The research suggests a need not only for better prenatal care to reduce the number of premature babies, but also a need for early diagnosis and intervention for people with autism.

PARIS, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Faced with new problems such as sovereign debt and downward risks, all countries should work together to enhance coordination on macroeconomic policies to guard economic growth and financial stability with respective effort, Chinese delegates said Saturday here at the G20 Financial Ministers Meeting. The global economy is challenged by new difficulties which require all countries to join hands in fighting all sorts of protectionism either in trade or in investment, according to a statement issued by the Chinese delegation led by Chinese Financial Minister Xie Xuren and Central Bank Governor Zhou Xiaochuan.China suggested that leading developed countries should ensure economic recovery and financial stability in short term, while in the medium term enhance fiscal solidarity, accelerate structural reform and refrain the negative impact of macroeconomic policies.Meanwhile, China also stressed that the emerging countries should make their own contribution to tackle the problems. BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- NASA recently unveiled its new rocket design, named Space Launch System (SLS), according to media reports. The rocket will make its first unmanned flight in 2017, and the flight with astronauts aboard won't happen until 2021, according to NASA's plan. The new rocket was 320 feet in length (the space shuttle was 184 feet on the launch pad), 5.5 million pounds in weight, and with the capacity of holding four astronauts at the top speed of 25,000 miles per hour, Washington Post reported Tuesday.Compared with space shuttle and other predecessors, the new rocket will aim for much farther destinations into the space with its most powerful engine ever built, according to the plan."We're investing in technologies to live and work in space, and it sets the stage for visiting asteroids and Mars," the NASA administrator Charles Bolden briefed the media at a news conference in Washington.NASA expected to devote 3 billion U.S. dollars a year to the effort, or a total of about 18 billion U.S. dollars over the next six years, said William Gerstenmaier, the agency’s associate administrator for human exploration. The current financial condition of U.S. may slow down the pace of progress, which will be much slower than NASA's Apollo heyday in the 1960s.
