You could say Sindy Bregman and Allison Young are modern day golden girls. Just like Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia from the hit show The Golden Girls, Bregman and Young live together, all while experiencing life in their golden years. As of three months ago, Bregman and Young was perfect strangers. Bregman had recently lost a partner, and Young’s apartment building was being torn down.“So then I thought, well, I’ll go back to what I was doing in college when I was a young, starving actress, and thought well, I’ll get a roommate!” Young says. For Bregman, it was her first time ever pursuing a roommate. But it made perfect sense. Not only did a roommate help financially and emotionally, it also helped with safety, says Bregman. Having a roommate also provided companionship. According to AARP, one-third of Americans over the age of 45 say they're lonely. That’s why non-profits like Senior Homeshares--where the two friends found each other--are growing. "What you do is you sign up either as a home seeker or homeowner, [and] you fill out a profile,” explains Stephanie Heacox, creator of SeniorHomeshares.org. Heacox says the process is similar to filling out a dating profile. Users list their preferences, including what they’re looking for in a housemate. Bregman’s profile stated she was "neat, clean and responsible" and looking for the same to share her apartment. “The first person I pulled up was Sindy, and her introduction was just perfect for me,” recalls Young.The new friends and roommates are also fans of The Golden Girls, with Young calling herself a Blanche. “I think I’m more like a Dorothy,” replies Bregman. However, the pair says there’s another sitcom that may be even more appropriate to describe them. "Even though we might be a little bit like The Odd Couple,” Bregman says, laughing. “Like yanno, Oscar and Felix. We make it work." 1890

 Las Vegas is getting set to host the first major event since the 1 October shooting.The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon has 40,000 runners registered for Sunday's races.As one of the rare events that shuts down the Las Vegas Strip, security concerns are heightened this year in light of the recent tragedy."Up until the shooting I honestly didn't even think about security as an issue and as soon as that happened, I was a little nervous," said Tom Sullivan, who will be running his first marathon.Captain Andy Walsh with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is in charge of security this year.He says marathon safety really changed after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2014, and 1 October changed it again."We've added some counter-sniper surveillance posts along the route," Walsh said. "We're going to have coverage from our helicopter unit."He added there will be 350 officers on the ground plus several large vehicles like dump trucks and buses to act as makeshift barriers.Some runners say crossing the finish line has become even more imperative now than ever."Just because this may be harder or scarier, it's not going to stop me," Sullivan said.Esther Reincke is dedicating her run to Cameron Robinson, who died in October's shooting.Robinson was her co-worker and running buddy."I can run now and Cameron can't," Reincke said. "That's really moving for me, to have somebody that was so young and so full of life and really just getting his life going."Before the race Sunday, 58 white cross memorials will be moved from the 'Welcome to Las Vegas' sign to a museum.If you are heading down to the marathon, there will be some road closures to keep in mind. I love it," said Widd.Four years ago, Widd and her husband briefly thought about retiring in San Diego County. We also have two Costcos ... a lot of the same products," said Widd.When it comes to health care costs, the Widds have options. We do get to travel," said Widd.She's not alone. Various estimates put the number of Americans living in Rosarito between 12,000 and 15,000. In the past few years, U.S. citizens have reported that number is increasing, especially among those under the age of 50 who commute to San Diego. Widd has seen it firsthand. Usually the number is closer to one volunteer. You have to think it's about the cost of living for them," said Widd.Like those commuters, Widd is a part-time San Diegan. Twice a month, Marilyn and her husband get in the car and make the 2-hour drive to visit their family. The trips are a priceless part of a life she now calls her dream retirement. "At the end of the day, we made the best choice for us. I expect to live in Rosarito forever," said Widd. 2628
