(KGTV) - The San Diego Police Department is launching its "bait bike" program in Point Loma and Ocean Beach after its success in Pacific Beach.The program outfits bikes with GPS devices that notify officers when a bike is being stolen. Officers are able to track the suspect's location in real time before arresting them.San Diego PD has received enough funding for at least 2 bait bikes for Point Loma and Ocean Beach, according to Councilmember Lorie Zapf’s Office.MAP: Track crimes in your neighborhoodFigures from Pacific Beach indicate officers have arrested 128 bike thieves since the program began, with the program having a 100 percent conviction rate.Bait bikes were first rolled out in SDPD in 2014.It’s estimated more than 3,000 bikes are stolen every year across San Diego County. A Barrio Logan school that is under construction is the center of a battle. Artists in the community painted a mural at Memorial Preparatory School in the 1970s and part of the construction involves tearing that wall down, an action the artists tried to fight.The artists gathered outside the school Wednesday to voice their concerns over the destruction of the wall. They said they asked the San Diego Unified School District to move the mural before tearing the wall down, but the school said asbestos in the wall made it too dangerous to move and it could not be saved.The artists said the wall is a celebration of the Chicano community.“What I painted on the wall was the diversity of the students, the diversity of the world. I got on there blacks, browns, whites, Chinese and everybody that was concentrated there including Jimmy Hendrix,” said Mario Torero, one of the original artists.A spokesperson for the school district said this construction is years in the making and will ultimately better the community because of the improved infrastructure. The district took high quality photographs of the mural and plans to display those pictures on the newly renovated campus. There will also be space for new murals. They added that they did not want to take the mural down, but had to for safety reasons.For the Chicano community, these actions are not enough. They wanted more effort in trying to preserve the piece of history.“We are finally facing what we want, justice, not just for one, not for all, so this is a very important move we’re doing here. They mean business too, so do we,” said Torero.Wednesday, the original artists and advocates gathered in front of the construction to share their message. Shortly after, a woman sat in the middle of the demolition zone in protest. She was eventually arrested and moments after she left the area, demolition of the mural continued and it fell to the ground. The artists were standing by to watch their work fall.“It is very very hurtful, especially knowing that we were trying to save it and we did everything possible to save it. They went ahead anyway in a callous manner so this just shows you what we’re having to endure.” 2196

(KGTV) - U.S. PIRG Education Fund released a report Thursday indicating fidget spinners for sale at Target stores nationwide contained high levels of lead.The study was conducted on the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass and Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal.U.S. PIRG posted on its website that it had alerted Target and the toy’s distributer, Bulls i Toy, but both were not addressing the lead concerns.According U.S. PIRG, Target and Bulls i Toy defended their choices to the Consumer Product Safety Commission that fidget spinners are not technically children’s products and subject to legal limits for lead.“Saying fidget spinners aren’t toys defies common sense, as millions of parents whose kids play with spinners can tell you,” said Kara Cook-Schultz, U.S. PIRG Education Fund toxics director. A search on Target's website Thursday showed the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass was not available for sale and the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal was not listed. 987

(KGTV) -- The Director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday the agency has given the go-ahead for Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine to be administered, CNN reported.The CDC says the vaccine may be given to those 16 and older.The approval means shots can now be given in the United States, CNN reports. Friday, the FDA granted emergency use authorization for the vaccine.Following the announcement, the first trucks carrying vaccines pulled out of a Michigan manufacturing plant Sunday morning.The Associated Press reported that the initial doses of the vaccine will likely be limited to healthcare workers and those in nursing homes.More than 325,000 doses of the vaccine were making their way to California Sunday as cases continue to spike.So far, the Golden State has seen more than 1,521,000 cases and nearly 21,000 deaths.According to San Diego County officials, the first 28,000 doses of the vaccine will be distributed to Rady Children’s Hospital, UCSD, and the county. 1017
