The district had previously offered families an option of in-person or online distance learning.Monday's announcement comes as President Donald Trump continues to put pressure on states to open school campuses. Both districts will continue planning for a return to in-person learning during the 2020-21 academic year, as soon as public health conditions allow.This announcement represents a significant disappointment for the many thousands of teachers, administrators and support staff, who were looking forward to welcoming students back in August. Most of all, this decision will impact our students in ways that researchers will take years to understand.Our leaders owe it to all of those impacted by the COVID-19 closures to increase the pace of their work. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nine drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a downtown San Diego checkpoint Friday night.The checkpoint was set up on the 1400 block of G Street between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.Throughout the course of the night, police checked more than 1,100 vehicles. Nine people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Another individual was arrested on other criminal charges, police said.“A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers,” police said in a news release. 711

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One man was arrested and another man was injured after a violent argument at a Gaslamp convenience store.San Diego Police say a customer at the 7-11 store at 515 5th Ave. was causing a disturbance at about 9 a.m. Saturday. Another customer confronted the man inside the store and the confrontation escalated into a fight.At one point, the 31-year-old suspect stabbed the 52-year-old victim in the left side of his abdomen, police said.The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries and police arrested the suspect, though their identities were not released. 614

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors in Hillcrest say an abandoned church has become a campground for the homeless. The church sold the land to developer LMC North Park Holdings in 2018. They were still leasing it out until about a month ago. That's when residents say the homeless started moving in. "It's more or less the drug crowd, sex trafficking, stuff like that that winds up utilizing these areas," he said. The spot on Park Boulevard and Meade Avenue is boarded up, covered in graffiti, and littered with needles. On Tuesday, firefighters say transients smoking drugs started a fire at another vacant building a few blocks down. Passante says it's just a matter of time before that happens at the church. "It's the same people you see over and over and over again and most of them have some kind of mental illness," said Passante. "The quicker places like this can be demolished the less we'll have that problem.LMC North Park Holdings says they are aware of the problem and have hired 24/7 security. Our crews didn't see any security guards while out there for several hours gathering the story. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person was injured late Friday after a stabbing near Fox Canyon in eastern San Diego.A 25-year-old man was with two other people in the 4900 block of Auburn Dr. just after 10 p.m. when an unknown suspect walked up to the group and got in an argument with the victim, San Diego Police said.The argument escalated, ending with the suspect stabbing the victim multiple times in the left side of his body, police said.
