DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - Work to repair two washout areas near the train tracks on the Del Mar bluffs will lead to a partial rail closure this weekend, the North County Transit District said Wednesday. A project team was able to move up the repair timeline from January to Dec. 14-15, according to the NCTD. The washouts were first reported during a storm over the Thanksgiving holiday. All rail operations from the Solana Beach train station to Santa Fe Depot downtown will be halted and replaced with bus bridges for COASTER trains. DENVER (AP) — A couple convicted of criminal charges in the so-called balloon boy hoax that fascinated the country more than a decade ago were pardoned Wednesday by the governor of Colorado.Dozens of rescue crews scrambled to save the 6-year-old boy after Richard and Mayumi Heene reported he had floated away in a homemade UFO-shaped silver helium balloon in 2009.According to the Associated Press, authorities said the couple staged the incident because they wanted publicity to pitch reality TV shows. But the child was never in the balloon. According to the AP, he was home in Ft. Collins. The couple eventually pleaded guilty, served jail time, and was ordered to pay restitution.Democratic Gov. Jared Polis says they don’t deserve to be dragged down by criminal records for the rest of their lives.“In the case of Richard and Mayumi Heene, the “balloon boy” parents, we are all ready to move past the spectacle from a decade ago that wasted the precious time and resources of law enforcement officials and the general public,” Gov. Polis said in a statement. “Richard and Mayumi have paid the price in the eyes of the public, served their sentences, and it’s time for all of us to move on. It’s time to no longer let a permanent criminal record from the balloon boy saga follow and drag down the parents for the rest of their lives.”The governor also pardoned 16 other individuals on Wednesday. 1406

DENVER — Christmas gifts may not arrive in time as U.S. Postal Service offices struggle to keep up with delivery demands.James Boxrud, a USPS spokesperson based in Colorado, said they're experiencing historical mail volume.“This week is our busiest week, of our busiest month, of our busiest year ever,” Boxrud said. “We are seeing so many packages.”Millions of Americans turned to online shopping during the pandemic for everyday necessities and again for holiday shopping.“It’s like the perfect storm,” Boxrud said.USPS is overwhelmed as people experience long delays and deliveries past the promised window on priority shipping.Stephanie Turner, a teacher and business owner, said with family gatherings canceled, her package list got a little longer this year.“We would normally ship three or four boxes of gifts, and this year we are shipping five because of people we are not seeing,” Turner said. “If everybody is shipping a little bit more, it’s going to be overwhelming.”She mailed her gifts right after Thanksgiving and said they all arrived, but it’s her business she’s worried about. Turner sells custom jackets and tops on her website and Poshmark.“Right now, I have items that I mailed on Dec. 1 that still haven’t arrived, so that’s three weeks,” Turner said. “I feel really bad for my customers, but there is not much I can do.”The shipping delays tie up money — she doesn’t get paid until the package arrives. The Washington Post reported nearly 19,000 of the agency’s 644,000 workers are under quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19. They also found that mail performance plummeted and only 75% of first-class mail, like letters and bills, arrived during the promised window on the week of Dec. 5. Mail service scored 95% last year during the same time period.“We are flexing our resources,” Boxrud said.“We are borrowing people from areas of Colorado, bringing them to an area that needs some help just to try to keep up with that flow.”On Monday, USPS delivered 971,000 packages in Colorado and Wyoming, according to Boxrud.Private express carriers also stopped serving some businesses, which pushed more shipments through USPS adding to an already strained agency, the Washington Post reported.Turner is encouraging people to print out photos of gifts that haven’t arrived and wrap them up. She said she read the tip online. “Just be patient — it’s going to come,” Tuner said. Some Coloradans believe that while it’s frustrating, they understand postal workers are doing their best under the circumstances.“I feel bad for those guys,” Turner said. Many postal workers are working overtime and will work into Christmas Eve to deliver packages. Boxrud said some express mail will be delivered on Christmas Day.This story originally reported by Adi Guajardo on TheDenverChannel.com. 2814

Two batters prior, the ump had ejected another catcher and manager Brad Ausmus after a close pitch to Cleveland's Jay Bruce. The MLB is looking into circumstances around the strike. Wolcott was knocked over by it and questioned whether it happened on purpose. The Tigers had bickered with the umpire throughout the game prior to the hit, the AP reports.Detroit lost the game 5-3.Ausmus said in an interview that if any player struck an umpire intentionally he would "deal with that very severely." 882

Despite calls for a boycott from President Donald Trump, the NFL had its most-searched month on Google in September, according to Google statistics that date back to 2004. Google searches for the NFL have steadily grown both domestically and internationally since 2004. Google searches for the NFL tend to rise dramatically during the season and fall after the Super Bowl. And while television ratings for the NFL took a dip in 2017, according to Yahoo, TV ratings are up 3 percent so far this season. This comes despite a precipitous drop in broadcast television viewership in 2018.And despite Trump's call for a boycott, the NFL's online popularity remains high even in reliably Red States such as Nebraska and South Carolina. For instance, the NFL's rise in popularity on Google in Nebraska has mirrored the rise in a solid Blue State such as Oregon. Among the four largest professional sports leagues in the United States, the NFL generally is the most searched league. Since 2004, the NFL has had 50 percent more searches than the NBA, 200 percent more than MLB, and 500 percent more than the NHL. In recent years, the NBA has almost caught up to the NFL's domestic popularity on the search engine, while the MLB and NHL have fallen behind. Worldwide, the NBA continues to be the most searched league based in the US, thanks in large part to its popularity in China and Europe. Which NFL teams are most popularAccording to Google, the five most popular NFL teams this season are: 1537
