NEW YORK (AP and KGTV) — Sears is closing 80 more stores, including six locations in San Diego, as it teeters on the brink of liquidation. The iconic retailer, once the nation's largest department store chain, set a deadline of Friday for bids for its remaining stores to avert closing down completely.Sears has not received any bids as of Friday afternoon. The retailer that began out as a mail order catalog in the 1880s has been in a slow death spiral, hobbled by the Great Recession and then overwhelmed by rivals both down the street and across the internet. The 80 stores are due to close by March. That's in addition to 182 stores already slated for closure, including 142 by the end of 2108 and 40 by February. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October , saying at the time it would close more than 20 percent of all stores, keeping open only its 500 most profitable locations.Sears Holdings Corp., which also runs Kmart, joins the list of retail brands taken over by hedge funds that collapsed under the weight of debt forced upon them.Under hedge fund manager Eddie Lampert, Sears has bought time by spinning off stores and putting on the block the brands that had grown synonymous with the company, such as Craftsman. The company's chairman and biggest shareholder, Lampert loaned out his own money and put together deals to keep the company afloat and to turn whatever profit he could for ESL hedge fund. Lampert and ESL have been trying to buy the rest of Sears for up to .6 billion in cash and stock. But no official bid appeared to have emerged as of 4 p.m. E.T. Friday. Sears declined to comment. 1642

NEW YORK (AP) — In a sign of how the pandemic is remaking Hollywood traditions, AMC Theatres and Universal Studios on Tuesday announced an agreement for a shortened theatrical window, with the studio’s films playing for a minimum of just 17 days in cinemas compared to the typical 90 days.Studios have increasingly sought to shorten that window and deliver new movies more quickly into the home. After 17 days, Universal Pictures and Focus Features will have the option to make their films available across premium video on demand platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime and AMC Theatres On Demand.“The theatrical experience continues to be the cornerstone of our business. The partnership we’ve forged with AMC is driven by our collective desire to ensure a thriving future for the film distribution ecosystem and to meet consumer demand with flexibility and optionality,” said Donna Langley, Chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group in a press release. This deal applies to U.S. theaters, international distribution between the two companies is still being negotiated.AMC and other theater chains have struggled during the pandemic as businesses closed earlier this year and indoor spaces face state-by-state guidance on social distancing and reopening policies.AMC says this multi-year deal with Universal is a commitment and belief that customers will come back.“We would note that just as restaurants have thrived even though every home has a kitchen, AMC is highly confident that moviegoers will come to our theatres in huge numbers in a post-pandemic world. As people enjoy getting out of their homes, we believe the mystical escape and magical communal experience offered at our theatres will always be a compelling draw," said AMC CEO Adam Aron in a statement.Universal said they are working with AMC and other distribution partners on restarting theatrical releases, including upcoming installments of Fast & Furious, Jurassic World, Despicable Me, and others.Tuesday's agreement repairs a rift between AMC and Universal brought on by the on-demand release of “Trolls World Tour” in April. The new deal covers Universal films in the U.S. over the next three years. 2195

Northwestern Memorial Hospital near Chicago says it has successfully completed two life-saving double lung transplants on COVID-19 patients — the first known procedures on virus patients in the U.S.The procedures were conducted on a 28-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man earlier this summer.According to a press release from Northwestern Medicine, Mayra Ramirez arrived at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital with COVID-19 symptoms on April 26. Within 10 minutes of arriving at the hospital, Ramirez was placed on a ventilator."From there, everything was a blur," Ramirez said.COVID-19 had "overrun" the paralegal's lungs, according to Dr. Beth Malsin at Northwestern Memorial."For many days, she was the sickest person in our COVID ICU and possibly the entire hospital," she said.Ramirez spent weeks in the COVID-19 ICU at the hospital, a time that she says she doesn't really remember."All I remember was being put to sleep as I was being intubated and then six weeks of complete nightmares," she told CNN. "Some of the nightmares consisted a lot of drowning, and I attribute that to not being able to breathe."By early June, doctors had decided that the virus had done irreversible damage to Ramirez's lungs, and only a transplant would save her life. After an urgent evaluation, she was placed on the transplant list.On June 5, Ramirez went through the life-saving procedure, just 48 hours after being listed on the transplant list.According to The New York Times, doctors are often extremely hesitant to perform lung transplants — patients must be sick enough to require new organs, but also healthy enough to be able to survive the procedure and rehab. As an otherwise healthy 28-year-old woman, Ramirez fit the qualifications.Ramirez was discharged from the hospital on July 8 — 71 days after she arrived at the hospital. She was the first COVID-19 patient in the United States to receive a double lung transplant.“People need to understand that COVID-19 is real. What happened to me can happen to you. So please, wear a mask and wash your hands. If not for you, then do it for others,” Ramirez said.Exactly one month after completing the first procedure, doctors at Northwestern Memorial performed a second double lung transplant on a COVID-19 patient. 62-year-old Brian Kuhns originally arrived at the hospital on March 18 after suffering from a severe cough.Prior to arriving at the hospital, Kuhns thought COVID-19 was "a hoax," according to his wife, Nancy."I assure you; Brian’s tune has now changed. COVID-19 is not a hoax. It almost killed my husband,” Nancy Kuhns said.Kuhns underwent surgery on July 5. According to the hospital, a typical double-lung transplant takes six or seven hours. Kuhns' surgery took 10 hours because COVID-19 resulted in lung necrosis and severe inflammation in the chest cavities.Kuhns was taken off a ventilator a day after the surgery, and the hospital says he continues to recover at an "optimal" pace."If my story can teach you one thing, it’s that COVID-19 isn’t a joke. Please take this seriously," Kuhns said. 3069
