CHICAGO, Ill. – Chicago’s police commissioner says more than 100 people were arrested following a night of looting and unrest that left 13 officers injured and caused damage in the city’s upscale Magnificent Mile shopping district and other parts of the city.Police Superintendent David Brown says it “was not an organized protest” but instead “an incident of pure criminality” that began following the shooting of a person by police the previous day in the city's Englewood neighborhood.It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the unrest, which began shortly after midnight, but anti-police graffiti was seen in the area.At one point early Monday, shots were fired at police and officers returned fire.Many of the businesses that were ransacked had recently opened after Chicago protests of George Floyd’s May 25 death in Minneapolis devolved into chaos.Brown says a heavy police presence is expected in the downtown area until further notice.Mayor Lori Lightfoot described it as “straight up, felony criminal conduct” and “an assault on our city." 1057

BURIEN, Wash. – Scott Mandella is a detective in Washington state. He is part of the harm reduction unit with the Burien Police Department, which operates a little differently than what most think of when they think of cops.Tara Moss is the project director for LEAD King County.“LEAD is a program that addresses public health and public safety needs with direct service, harm reduction framework and long-term engagement with individuals,” said Moss.LEAD started in Seattle in 2011 and operates in 30 cites across the U.S. It’s a program which has social workers work with law enforcement to help keep people out of jail and minimize their interactions with police.“They think they’re a good fit for LEAD, they can make a decision to divert that individual into case management services, if they agree to do so. So, instead of arresting someone and putting them in jail, they do a warm hand off, handing off to a case manager who does outreach and engagement with that individual,” said Moss.Does that sound familiar? Groups across the country have proposed defunding or abolishing the police. This model is what a lot of them are talking about.“You throw a cop at someone drinking in the park, and if someone still had that alcohol addiction, we’re going to keep going back to the park over and over and over again,” said Ted Boe, the police chief in Burien.He says his department was first in line to sign up for the LEAD program when the opportunity presented itself. He says it was time for the city to try something else.Bridget Scott is a case worker with LEAD.“Addiction or some of these other issues is not a straight line, and you can’t just tell somebody you’re going to be sober from tomorrow on, but realizing there’s going to be some zig zagging along the way,” said Scott.We spent an hour with Bridget looking for some of her clients, but didn’t find any.So, we met up again with Detective Scott Mandella. He’s worried about making sure one Burien resident gets to the hospital safely.“Gary. Gary, your brother’s here, and you’re going to be all right,” said Mandella.One of the people who called in the incident was the mayor of Burien, Jimmy Matta, who just happened to be running errands nearby. His family deals with a lot of the same issues other residents deal with.“My uncle is an alcoholic, and exactly what I’ve just seen here is what I end up doing with him, so these are real issues and even though I’m an elected official, you know I’m just like everybody else, what I can do for my uncle. My father passed away in Burien, Washington, of a drug overdose, heroin overdose,” said Matta.Everyone from the mayor to the cops, to the social workers, to the residents of Burien is tired of trying the same old thing: arresting people with substance abuse and mental health problems and hoping the problem goes away. Catastrophic wildfires continue to ravage California, as one blaze nearly doubled in size over the last three days, making it the largest in the state's history.No one has been injured in the Mendocino Complex Fire, which consists of two fires -- the Ranch Fire and the River Fire -- burning around Clear Lake, in several counties in Northern California.Combined, they form the biggest blaze that California firefighters are currently battling. Altogether, the Mendocino Complex Fire has burned 283,800 acres -- growing about 80% since Friday night. (KGTV) — Shortly after the De Luz Fire ignited on Camp Pendleton Wednesday, an unnamed Gunnery Sergeant jumped into action to evacuate more than 70 students.The brush fire broke out on base just after 12 p.m., prompting several precautionary evacuations of nearby structures, including schools, businesses, and hundreds of homes in the DeLuz Housing area.While there were no students or staff at Mary Fay Elementary School at the time of the fire, the base says, there were 73 students at the nearby Child Development Center that needed to be evacuated.An unnamed Gunnery Sgt. with the Provost Marshall’s Office commandeered a city transit bus to evacuate the children and residents, the base said. Emergency Services Battalion police and fire crews, along with NCIS agents, also helped transfer each student to the evacuation point to be reunited with their families."This Gunnery Sgt. exhibited but one example of the brave, fast-thinking actions that were taken this day," a release from Camp Pendleton officials said.Within three hours of sparking, the De Luz Fire was largely stamped out by firefighters as high temperatures brought an elevated threat of wildfires to the county on Wednesday."Their quick and heavy response, deploying all available units and requesting aid from CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire Authority, allowed for residents to return to their homes within four hours after evacuating," the release added.The only loss from the fire was an NCIS government vehicle, according to officials.
