Surfers are determined to catch 100 waves by the end of the day.They can participate solo or with a team. SAN DIEGO, California — A former Major League Baseball pitcher was awarded .3 million for injuries sustained after punching a man reportedly on LSD outside his Northern California home.Greg Reynolds claimed his career was cut short after he broke his hand punching Domenic Pintarelli on Jan. 16, 2015. Reynolds' attorney?Niall McCarthy says his client was attacked outside his home by Pintarelli, who was attending a party next door at a neighbor's house.McCarthy said both Pintarelli and the neighbor, Connor Pope, had taken LSD. Pope did not attack Reynolds but Pintarelli did, he alleges.Reynolds punched Pintarelli, breaking his pitching hand and costing his ability to "move and control" a baseball, McCarthy argues. Evidently, a jury agreed, awarding the former MLB pitcher .3 million in damages. SAN DIEGO (KGVT) -- Parents of San Diego Unified School District students will hold a demonstration Tuesday with a goal for the school district to return to full-time, in-person education as soon as possible.Parent and family therapist Gina Smith said she started the group called "Reopen SDUSD" because she is frustrated that other San Diego County districts have set reopening dates, and many private schools are already open. The group has already started a petition which has more than 650 signatures."What sparked the fire is that other schools have reopening plans within weeks and San Diego Unifed has been silent," Smith said.San Diego Unified has not released any definitive dates or a timeline for reopening.Currently, the district is reporting a projected loss of 2,474 students. Two out of every three un-enrolled students are kindergartners. Enrolling children into kindergarten is not mandatory in the state of California.The district has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening, and before that meeting, hundreds of parents are expected to rally over their concerns about distance learning. Some parents say they're concerned about the mental health impact distance learning is having on their children."The isolation and lack of social interaction is a huge part that many children as young as five are experiencing depressive symptoms", Smith said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Thousands of people got their vaccinations Saturday, to kick off this year's flu season. The vaccination event was held at four Kaiser Permanente locations in San Diego County.For Byron Frohm, a trip to Kaiser Permanente in Mid-September is an annual tradition. "I can't think of any reason not to get it," Frohm said. The reason he does get the flu shot is his perfect, 40-year flu-free record. He says the vaccinations help him ward off the dangerous bug. "This virus is very strong," Shreya Chandra, MD. said. "It is hitting our community, and getting the vaccination really is prevention."Last season, health officials recorded 77 deaths in San Diego County. In the 2017-2018 season, there were 343 deaths. This was the highest number of fatalities since the county began tracking flu data nearly two decades ago. Already this year, there has been one confirmed flu-related death. The county said a 74-year-old Chula Vista man died August 15, 2019, due to complications from Influenza B. All the more reason for 76-year-old Frohm to stick to his regimen. "At my age, I'm probably more susceptible," Frohm said. Other high-risk groups include pregnant women, people with asthma, diabetes, and other illnesses. Some symptoms of Influenza include high fever, severe body aches, nausea, sore throat, and fatigue. This could last up to two weeks. Many people mistake the signs to that of the common cold. Doctors say many people who have the flu do not show any symptoms. But they can still spread the illness."I can still carry it and pass it on to elderly parents or people who can potentially get really sick from this virus," Dr. Chandra said. That is why Dr. Chandra strongly recommends the annual vaccine. She believes the best treatment is prevention. "We have State-of-the-art care and medicine. We live in San Diego. But the point of this vaccination is that we never need State-of-the-art care. You never get sick in the first place," Dr. Chandra said. 1990

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) Thousands of homes braced for rotating outages Monday, but the outages were ultimately averted.The California Independent System Operator, which manages high voltage power transmission, had warned San Diego Gas and Electric and other utilities that it was very likely they would be ordered to implement rotating outages Monday.However, the outages were never ordered partly because local residents and businesses heeded the call to cut back on energy usage.SDG&E, which takes its cues from CAISO for rotating outages, says the rolling blackouts are still possible throughout the state if CAISO isn’t able to maintain a balance between energy demand and supply during the heatwave.A Flex Alert is currently in place through Wednesday.
