WASHINGTON (AP) — Military suicides have increased by as much as 20% this year compared to the same period in 2019, and some incidents of violent behavior have spiked.Service members are struggling with isolation and other effects of COVID-19, in addition to the pressures of deploying to war zones, responding to national disasters and addressing civil unrest. The data is incomplete and causes of suicide are complex, but Army and Air Force officials say the pandemic is adding stress to an already strained force. The numbers vary by service. The Army’s 30% spike pushes the total up because it’s the largest service. 626

WASHINGTON (AP) — A speaker who had been scheduled to address the second night of the Republican National Convention has been pulled from the lineup after directing her Twitter followers to a series of anti-Semitic, conspiratorial messages.Trump campaign spokesperson Tim Murtaugh says, “We have removed the scheduled video from the convention lineup and it will no longer run this week.”Mary Ann Mendoza had been scheduled to deliver remarks Tuesday night to highlight the president’s fight against illegal immigration. Mendoza’s son was killed in 2014 in a head-on collision by a man who was under the influence and living in the U.S. illegally. She and and other parents whose children have been killed by people in the country illegally have labeled themselves “Angel Moms” and have made frequent appearances at the White House and Trump campaign events.Mendoza had apologized for the tweet, writing that she “retweeted a very long thread earlier without reading every post within the thread” and said it “does not reflect my feelings or personal thoughts whatsoever.”A Republican familiar with the plans who spoke on condition of anonymity cited controversy as the reason for pulling Mendoza. The Republican wasn't authorized to speak about the matter publicly. 1273

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Michael Yager says he was outraged after learning his son, Jacob, bullied multiple classmates at New Smyrna Beach Middle School in Volusia County, Florida. "I figured I would teach him a lesson that would embarrass him and make him feel the way kids feel," he said.Wanting to teach his 13-year-old a lesson the frustrated father took an unorthodox approach. "I wrote the sign, I'm a bully. Honk if you hate bullies." Yager drove his son to nearby State Route 442 and parked him on a busy corner. His son had to hold the sign high."Embarrassed and kind of nervous," Jacob admitted. He says it did not take long for people to start honking.  Some even stopped to talk to father and son."I had Edgewater Police stop by, I had Volusia County Sheriffs. I had a good response from the neighborhood," Jacob's father said. But he acknowledged not everyone agrees with his parenting. "I had one woman come up and call me every name in the book. "How do you respond to parents who say putting your son out on the road is, in fact, bullying your own son?" he was asked."In my mind, I was doing the right thing, but I guess you cannot please everybody," Michael Yager said. A recent staggering statistic shows one out of every five students report being bullied. Jacob said he has learned a valuable lesson. "You never know what someone can be going through. Like, if you want to be the bully and if you have something inside you to tell someone go to a guidance counselor or something," he said.  1574

Voters were polarized after learning of Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation as a Supreme Court Justice. Both Republicans and Democrats who spoke with 10News on camera said they are frustrated with the way Doctor Christine Blasey?Ford's accusations were handled.READ RELATED:Brett Kavanaugh sworn in as Supreme Court justice"I'm truly just disgusted with the outcome and I'm just really disappointed with in our nation and what we stand for today," College Student Ngozi Egeonu said."It's very disappointing, I think it's very hurtful," Republican Ana Assaf said."He didn't give straight answers to me it seemed, then again I didn't see the whole interview, only saw bits and pieces," San Diegan Melvin Zelaya said.Egeonu said she's now concerned about Dr. Ford, "Now I'm worried about her own safety, and her own image knowing that she put herself out there and knowing this is something very traumatic that she's having to recall."They all agreed the FBI investigation felt rushed and inconclusive."I think it was disrespectful to the ladies who accused him and I don't think the whole, they didn't have enough time to investigate," Assaf said."I was surprised that that wasn't enough for them to be like hey, no we shouldn't nominate him," Zelaya said. Some believe the accusations are false and the timing is inappropriate, calling it a smear campaign. Zelaya says the past is relevant, "I think it is important because you know being on the Supreme Court is a really big deal, you're going to be on there the rest of your life and you're going to be making decisions that affect every citizen in this country's life."With the highly publicized hearings, some hope it will bring change."With this experience maybe he'll be open and fair, but I mean if he's already been sworn in there's nothing we can do now," Assaf said."I don't know if it will be enough to make an impact on how he stands as a person, I wish it would but I don't see that being much of a change for him," Egeonu said.Kavanaugh's confirmation tips the court in favor of Conservatives, concerning some voters. Zelaya said it is better to have an even and fair court. He said he was fond of Antonin Scalia because he was the wild card.An issue many women are concerned about is abortion and how Kavanaugh will vote on those cases."We have all these issues that are recycling from the past and I don't feel like anything is getting better, I hope with this people are able to wake up," Egeonu said.Kavanaugh's first cases are next week and focus on immigration, asbestos and firearms. 2639

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Two people were arrested this week after a pursuit took authorities from Valley Center into unincorporated Escondido.San Diego Sheriff's Department says the pursuit began just after 9 p.m. near State route 76 near Pala Mission Rd. after a deputy spotted a stolen truck.
