President Donald Trump cast doubt on his planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will occur on schedule, saying Tuesday the talks "may not work out for June 12."He was speaking alongside his South Korean counterpart, who is in Washington to shore up confidence ahead of the historic meeting.Trump said preparations were "moving along" for the diplomatic encounter with Kim, but suggested there may not be enough time for the two sides to agree on the parameters for talks."If it doesn't happen, maybe it will happen later," he said.In his meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Trump hoped to gain clarity on North Korea's nuclear intentions. Some US officials believe Moon oversold Pyongyang's promises when his government relayed Kim's invitation to Trump for talks in March. At the time his envoy said North Korea was "committed to denuclearization," but recent statements from the North have cast doubts on Kim's willingness to negotiate away his nuclear weapons. That in turn has led to skepticism the summit between Trump and Kim, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore, will proceed. White House aides have grown pessimistic in recent days that the talks will occur, even as Trump has shown no signs he's ready to withdraw.Moon, who has urged a diplomatic path in the belief it could forestall war, hopes to bolster confidence that the Singapore meeting will be a success. He met with Kim himself last month to great fanfare along the Korean Demilitarized Zone, a historic encounter that Trump hopes to replicate in his own talks. Those plans were complicated last week when North Korea issued a series of harsh statements condemning joint US-South Korea military exercises and threatening to pull out of the Trump summit if the US continues to call for nuclear abandonment.US officials were prepared to press Moon on the recent shift in tone, hoping to determine whether it is a signal of changing intentions or whether the North is simply trying to test Trump's willingness to negotiate ahead of the summit."We believe there is a 99.9% chance the North Korea-US summit will be held as scheduled," Chung Eui-yong, Moon's national security adviser, told reporters on the flight from Seoul to Washington. "But we're just preparing for many different possibilities."The two leaders were set to meet in the Oval Office at noon before joining a larger working lunch with aides. There was no joint news conference on the schedule, and Moon was only expected to be at the White House for roughly two hours. He was expected to meet with some of Trump's aides earlier in the day, however, as questions about the administration's approach to the summit continue to mount.National security adviser John Bolton, who has been outspoken in his hawkish views toward North Korea, drew Pyongyang's ire when he suggested Trump use a so-called "Libya model" to rid the country of its nuclear weapons. The US brokered a deal with Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in 2003 to abandon his nuclear weapons, but he was overthrown and killed in 2011.The Libya suggestion raised eyebrows in Seoul, where Bolton's comments were deemed unhelpful at best and deeply damaging to the potential for diplomacy at worst. Trump later clarified that he wasn't pursuing the Libya model in North Korea, but speculated things could end poorly for Kim if he doesn't agree to a deal.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has meanwhile adopted a more diplomatic approach, saying an agreement with Kim to abandon nuclear weapons could lead to economic assistance. Pompeo has met Kim twice in North Korea but didn't emerge with any specific commitments toward dismantling the nuclear program."Plans continue to go forward for a summit. We remain open to it, we remain hopeful," Vice President Mike Pence said on Fox Radio Tuesday. "But let me very clear: nothing has changed about the policy of the United States of America. There have been no concessions offered and none given."The-CNN-Wire 3968
PORT RICHEY, Florida — A toy that’s already on Christmas wish lists led to an x-rated surprise for a Florida family. "It’s extremely popular, you almost can’t find them on the shelves,” Shari Leveille said. Inside the colorful Poopsie Slime Surprise case is a poopsie keychain, container and ingredients to make sparkly slime. "My daughter, my sons, they all play with these toys,” John Corbett said. After Leveille and Corbett bought one from Target last week, they found a detail meant for adults only — a phone number printed on the milk carton that came with the collectible Bessi Cowpie. The number connects you straight to a sex line. “Want me to send you a sexy pic of me?” the message says in part. WFTS television station blurred the number because of its inappropriate nature.“It’s very disturbing,” Corbett said. They’re even more concerned about kids dialing it. We dialed the number too and got the same result."Maybe they call, maybe they wouldn’t but if they did all they have to do is press a couple buttons and it sent directly to their phone,” said Leveille. We reached out to the toy maker, MGA Entertainment. It’s the same company that makes LOL surprise dolls. Officials there tell us they’re working to remove the number from the product: 1332

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) — A group of demonstrators gathered in Poway to call for justice for George Floyd and against police brutality, in unison with other protests around the nation.About 75 people gathered with signs and marched along Poway Road with signs reading "Black Lives Matter" and "Stop the Hate, Build the Love."Some businesses, worried that scenes from La Mesa on Saturday night could happen in their city, boarded up doors and windows to deter any possible looting activity.A curfew has been enacted in Poway starting at 8 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. Monday. In a statement, the City of Poway said:"To our Poway community: The safety of our community is our number one priority. The City of Poway, alongside the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, is aware of and monitoring this afternoon’s peaceful gathering along Poway Road.We recognize and support every individual’s first amendment right to free speech and to voice that speech in public. But we have also witnessed the scenes playing out in communities across America once the sun goes down. To protect our city – and to deter unlawful activity in Poway – we are enacting an emergency curfew this beginning this evening, May 31 at 8 p.m. until Monday, June 1 at 5:30 a.m." 1237
President Donald Trump addressed the graduating class at the U.S. Military Academy against a backdrop of urgent questions about the role of soldiers in a civil society. Tensions between the White House and the military have escalated since protests over Floyd's death swept the nation. 582
POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) — Poway officials unanimously approved the use of outdoor space for fitness classes and religious services, after the state banned indoor activities at gyms and placed of worship this week.Wednesday, Poway City Council leaders voted to allow Poway park space to be reserved for fitness- or religious-related activities as part of the city's Sharing Outdoor Spaces, or "SOS," initiative. Reserving spaces will not come at a cost, according to Poway Mayor Steve Vaus.RELATED: Newsom shuts down indoor activities across CaliforniaEffective Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all indoor activities to close at fitness centers, worship services, offices for non-critical sections, personal care services, hair salons and barber shops, and malls across the state amid rising coronavirus cases."In Poway we often think outside the box, this time we’re thinking outside the walls," said Mayor Vaus. "Last week we offered restaurants a lifeline through the simple act of loaning picnic tables and the outpouring of support in Poway was overwhelming. Given the current mandates, we need to look for creative and safe ways to help keep more ‘doors’ open in Poway. We’ve got the space at our parks to offer this, at no cost, with minimal impact on other park users."RELATED: Vista businesses allowed to take services outdoorsThe reservation of park space would be limited to Poway-based houses of worship, and fitness organizations with a current Poway business certificate and commercial insurance, the city says. The county's COVID-19 guidelines must also be adhered to, including mandates on face coverings and physical distancing.Councilman Barry Leonard said the initiative is "a common-sense approach" in response to the rollback of openings for these businesses."This is beneficial to our community," Leonard added. "We're not forcing people to do anything. We're not telling people they have to come out and be uncomfortable."Poway's decision comes the same day as a similar move by the City of Vista to allow similar businesses "to temporarily relocate their existing business operations to an adjacent outdoor area during the COVID-19 pandemic."City News Service contributed to this report. 2219
