According to police, the incident happened around 9:30 a.m. at the Mills Building on Imperial Avenue downtown. The building houses San Diego County government offices. Police say the man threatened an employee on the 5th floor of the building before damaging computer monitors in the office. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego couple is challenging a luxury carmaker after their BMW SUV suddenly caught on fire. The Pearsons said they bought a BMWx5 in August 2018 because they thought it would be safe and reliable. In December, they replaced the battery at BMW of Escondido. The next month, Lisa Pearson was driving on Interstate 15 when she noticed a warning light showing an airbag and parking brake error. She pulled over and noticed smoke coming from the back of the car.“It happened so fast,” Lisa said. A fire had started from the rear of her vehicle. A passing tow truck driver stopped to help put out the smoke and flames. Firefighters told her it could have been a different story if her children were inside in their car seats. “It was really nerve wracking,” Lisa said. “I was really thankful since I saw that the fire was happening in the back of the car that the kids weren’t there.”They said their SUV was a total loss. It was after the fire that the Pearsons ran into even more problems. When BMW of North America inspected the vehicle, they blamed it on “an improperly secured connection of the battery cable." In the letter to the Pearsons dated February 29, 2019, Executive Customer Care Representative Michael Pigoncelli wrote, “BMW NA cannot accept responsibility for any damage, injury, or loss associated with the fire…” BMW of Escondido disagreed with corporate’s allegations, writing to the Pearsons that “the repair was done as per the BMW guidelines.” “It just seems that they’re pointing fingers at each other. Nobody cares about us or the consumer,” said Ryan Pearson. “It was still under factory warranty,” Lisa added, saying they hadn't even had it for five months. “What’s it going to take? Does someone need to die?” The Pearsons are not the only local couple to have their BMW catch fire. In October 2017, Laura Ohme said her parked BMW started a fire at the Torrey Hills homes where she lived with her family.She was in the shower when she heard a strange noise. “I just hear this really really weird popping kind of noises,ll ” Ohme said. With her two kids asleep in their rooms, she threw on a towel to find out what was going on. She went downstairs and saw smoke. “The door itself [was] literally black and glowing.”Ohme grabbed her two children and ran outside the house. “The fire, it was raging at that point,” she said.Fire investigators determined her recently purchased 2014 BMWx5 started the fire. It was a certified pre-owned vehicle she bought just a few months before. Ohme said the vehicle was sitting in the garage and turned off at the time of the fire. "I didn’t even put 5,000 miles on the car,” Ohme said. She said BMW has had a “non-response” to the situation. “BMW is not taking responsibility,” she added.While the Ohmes and Pearsons’ fires started under different circumstances, they shared things in common. Both BMWx5s were recently purchased just a few months before the fires. They both had warranties and neither vehicle was under a recall.ABC News started investigating mysterious BMW fires in 2017. Like the Ohmes, dozens involved vehicles that were parked and turned off. Since then, about 1.6 million BMWs have been recalled for fire risk. A BMW spokesperson told Team 10: "BMW notifies owners of vehicles affected by a recall via registered mail to advise them that their vehicle is part of an upcoming recall campaign and what the next steps are. BMW recently expanded its recall notification system for vehicles built after 3/2016 to allow owners to also be notified through the BMW Connected App on their smartphone. A vehicle recall may require that a part be replaced or software be updated." A spokesperson for BMW of North America told Team 10 they could not comment on the Ohme’s situation “due to litigation.” The Ohmes' attorney told me they are preparing a class-action lawsuit for the damages caused by the BMW fires.“I was able to get myself and my children out safely, but at some point someone is going to die,” she said.Regarding the Pearsons, BMW of North America wrote on March 22nd that they still believe the Pearsons’ vehicle caught fire because of “an improperly tightened battery terminal after a recent battery service.” The spokesperson added: “BMW is currently working with the dealer and the owner to resolve the matter.”In an email on March 22nd, a few days after Team 10 first contacted BMW of Escondido, the service manager wrote he “sent the Pearsons claim and contact info for [their] insurance company” and instructed their insurance to settle her claim as quickly as possible. They still disagree with BMW of North America’s findings. “We can’t let this go on and hurt other people,” said Ryan.“You are saying you are a very high quality company that sells very luxury cars, and yet your cars are catching fire. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy SEAL was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to molesting his relative in California.Gregory Kyle Seerden pled guilty to seven counts of molestation following a preliminary hearing in which the victim testified. According to the court, the abuse happened while Seerden was a Navy SEAL stationed in San Diego. "We can start healing today by making him answer for his crimes every day for the rest of his pathetic existence," Alicia Reppert said, reading a prepared testimony.Reppert is Seerden's ex-wife. She said on the stand, that her daughter endured abuse from her father, starting from when she was five years old. The Deputy District Attorney said the girl mustered up the courage to report her father's crimes in 2015. At the pretrial hearing in May, the now 12-year-old testified in front of a judge. The testimony was so powerful, Seerden pleaded guilty to seven of the nine counts of molestation, without going to trial. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison. Seerden is already serving a 27-year federal sentence for manufacturing child pornography. In 2017, Seerden was accused of of raping a woman while serving in the Navy in Virginia. When authorities searched his cell phone, they found child pornography, including a video of him abusing another 5 year-old relative, while she slept. "In California, you can use that evidence to corroborate molestation in this case," Deputy DA Amy Colby said. Seerden was arrested on April 3, 2017, for the case involving child pornography. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man has been sentenced to more than six years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple gun charges in a Tucson, Arizona federal court.Joshua Pratchard came to the FBI's attention after a short-lived attempt to join what prosecutors call a border militia group in Arizona in January 2018. The group kicked Pratchard out after just a few days, saying he did not want to follow their rules, including repeatedly asking to get physical with detainees and demanding to put a silencer on his weapon. He was also deemed eager for confrontations with criminal bandits known as "rip crews" who seek to steal drug loads in the desert.Pratchard continued to be involved in activity in Arizona, leading to contact with a member of the group who was a FBI informant. Pratchard revealed that he manufactured and sold weapons. The informant reported this to the FBI, which led to an investigation. Eventually, Pratchard was arrested after selling firearms to the informant. A search of Pratchard's apartment in Pacific Beach led to the discovery of a "gun factory." Along with the machinery to build firearms and bullets, agents found four homemade guns and enough gunpowder for 9,000 rounds of ammunition.The FBI investigation also discovered Pratchard's criminal history, which includes a conviction for having ecstasy when he was serving in the Marine Corps, and a 2007 felony assault conviction.Although he has been sentenced on the gun charges, Pratchard's legal trouble may not be over. During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors made multiple references to a non-profit organization Pratchard ran in San Diego which could see fraud charges filed in the future. 10News uncovered Pratchard's involvement leading a charity known as "Second Chance Fields," which is dedicated to rebuilding or refurbishing athletic fields at San Diego schools. His website touts to significant projects, including renovation of the baseball field at Mission Bay High School and a large-scale renovation of football and lacrosse facilities at Del Norte High School. For the latter project, Pratchard recruited former San Diego Padres star Adrian Gonzalez, who appeared at a press conference with Pratchard at the school and whose foundation donated ,000, according to the Second Chance Fields website.10News asked the FBI if there was an investigation underway into Pratchard and Second Chance Fields. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A political kingmaker is using his fortune to shake up the San Diego race for District Attorney.The first television ads are hitting airwaves now, little more than a month before the election.The element of surprise surrounds the tone of an ad paid for by billionaire George Soros. He’s known for backing progressive candidates and shaking up elections, usually with controversial ads.The ad lays out Geneviéve Jones Wright’s qualifications to be San Diego County’s next District Attorney. It does not attack her opponent Summer Stephan, which is what most politicos expected.Jones Wright told 10News she had not seen the ad.Stephan’s campaign manager said he’s surprised the ad is more of an introduction than an attack. Jason Roe also said there is no doubt in his mind the gloves will come off, based on what he called Soros’ pattern of negative and dishonest ads.Jones Wright filed a complaint with the attorney general claiming Stephan was basically campaigning on the job and using photo ops with law enforcement in her campaign materials.Stephan’s campaign manager called it a distraction. 1128
