KEARNY MESA (CNS) - A man armed with a BB gun robbed a Korean restaurant in Kearny Mesa, San Diego police said.The robbery took place just before 10 p.m. Friday at Woomiok, located in the 3800 block of Convoy Street, SDPD said.The thief, allegedly a former employee of Woomiok's, stole 0 from the register, SDPD said. While reaching over to grab the money from the register, the employee he threatened with the gun, grabbed it. During the struggle for the gun the suspect dropped it and ran from the restaurant heading southeast through the parking lot.The robber was described as Hispanic. KATHMANDU, Nepal — China and Nepal have jointly announced a new official height for Mount Everest, ending a discrepancy between the two nations that share a border on the world's highest mountain. The new height of the world's highest peak is 8,848 meters (29,032 feet), slightly more than Nepal's previous measurement and about four meters (13 feet) higher than China's. It's also higher than the 29,029-foot-height commonly used dating back to a survey conducted by India in the early 1950s. The new height was agreed on after the two counties sent surveyors from their respective sides of the mountain in 2019 and 2020. The teams used a combination of old-fashioned trigonometry and the latest technology that relies on readings from satellite navigation systems and models of sea level, according to the Washington Post. “We can be confident that this is the most accurate height of Everest that we have ever had,” said Susheel Dangol, Nepal’s chief survey officer, who headed the project. “It was a huge responsibility on our part. It is a moment of great pride for us.”There had been debate over the actual height and concern that Everest might have shrunk after a major earthquake in Nepal in 2015. (KGTV) – A man who reportedly tried to hit his girlfriend with a pickaxe was taken into custody after a standoff at a La Jolla Shores home.At around 10:40 a.m. Thursday, San Diego police officers were called to a house in the 2500 block of Ellentown Road after receiving reports of a domestic violence incident.10News learned a man inside reportedly threatened his girlfriend with a pickaxe, prompting her to leave. The unidentified man remained inside and refused police orders to come out."When we first got here, he was not communicating with us, he was just inside the house, yelling and screaming and banging against the wall," said SDPD Captain Tina Williams.While officers tried to persuade him to surrender, sections of Ellentown Road were shut down due to the police activity.At times the man appeared in the windows of the home holding the ax and knives, according to Williams. He also started a debris fire on top of his stove, sending smoke billowing from the house. Shortly after 1 p.m., the man went to the backyard, where police took him into custody without incident, according to Williams.The man was booked on suspicion of attempted assault with a deadly weapon and felony domestic violence battery.The victim was not seriously injured.Williams said the incident was not the first time police had been called to the house. "Earlier this week, we did respond out here... he was out in the middle of the street causing an altercation," she said.
