AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Orders by the governors of Texas and Ohio to stop all non-essential surgeries in those states have unleashed a new battle over access to abortions during the coronavirus pandemic. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statewide order Sunday to curb the use of medical supplies hospitals will need as they prepare for escalating infections in the spreading of COVID-19. The order bars hospitals from performing surgeries unless the patient faces an immediate risk for “serious adverse medical consequences or death." An Abbott spokesman confirmed that would cover abortion in most cases. In Ohio, clinics, abortion rights groups and some state lawmakers pushed back, saying abortions are both essential and time-sensitive. 748

Authorities say three people were fatally shot and nine others injured at a home in Long Beach, California. The Los Angeles Times 141

Authorities say a Florida deputy fatally shot an armed man several hours after a stolen pickup truck he was riding in ran over a police detective in another county. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd says 31-year-old Aaron Phillips was killed Wednesday while fighting with a deputy at a mobile home park near Mulberry. A woman who had been with Phillips, 36-year-old April Thompson, was hospitalized with two gunshot wounds. In neighboring Hillsborough County on Wednesday morning, a Plant City detective was run over while trying to approach Phillips and Thompson's truck. Judd says nearby law enforcement agencies were told about the pair after they carjacked another truck. 684

BBC radio broadcaster Danny Baker has been fired after posting a racist tweet about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's new baby.On Wednesday, the BBC Radio 5 Live presenter tweeted a black and white photo of a man and woman holding hands with a chimpanzee in a suit and a top hat, with the caption, "Royal baby leaves hospital."Amid widespread accusations of racism, Baker deleted the tweet and said he was sorry the "gag" had "whipped some up." He claimed the connotations had not occurred to him because his "mind (is) not diseased."In a second message, Baker said that the tweet was "supposed to be a joke about Royals vs circus animals in posh clothes but interpreted as about monkeys & race, so rightly deleted. Royal watching not my forte." On Thursday, the broadcaster said he made an "enormous mistake."A BBC spokesperson said: "This was a serious error of judgment and goes against the values we as a station aim to embody. Danny's a brilliant broadcaster but will no longer be presenting a weekly show with us."Baker responded defiantly to the decision, saying on Twitter that the calls for his dismissal were a "masterclass in pompous faux-gravity" and that the BBC "literally threw me under the bus."Prince Harry and Meghan's newborn son, 1265
