LOS ANGELES — Britney Spears is asking a court to curb her father's control over her life and career. In documents filed Tuesday, Spears asked that her father not return to the role of conservator of her person, which gave him power over her life decisions from 2008 until 2019, when he temporarily stepped aside.According to the BBC, Spears is requesting that her manager, Jodi Montgomery, to permanently remain in charge of her affairs when the conservatorship comes up for an extension on Aug. 22.The issue will be discussed at a Wednesday hearing. The documents give a rare public glimpse of the wishes of the 38-year-old pop superstar. Spears last toured in 2018, and sources say she has no plans to return to performing anytime soon.In recent years, some of Spears' fans have said that they believe the singer was forced into the conservatorship arrangement, prompting a social media campaign to #FreeBritney. An email seeking comment from James Spears' attorney was not immediately returned. 1003

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Voters who hate resetting their clocks twice a year took the first step Tuesday to making daylight saving time year-round in California. With nearly 4.5 million ballots counted, Proposition 7 led by more than 62 percent. The measure permits the state Legislature to establish permanent daylight saving time. However, a change in federal law would be required before the initiative can take effect. The time-change issue was fresh on voters' minds when they went to the polls. California and most of the rest of the nation reset clocks last Sunday, falling back on standard time and seeing the day get dark one hour earlier.Democratic Rep. Kansen Chu of San Jose said last month that he sponsored Proposition 7 after his dentist called him to complain about springing forward when clocks are moved up an hour every March. That switch takes away an hour's sleep in the middle of the night as it shifts an hour of sunlight from the morning to the evening.Chu said he investigated the issue further and learned the original reason for implementing daylight saving — to save energy during World War I— no longer seemed to apply to the modern world.Chu said he also came across studies showing an increased risk of car accidents and heart attacks following the spring change when people lose an hour of sleep."It's a public safety measure," Chu said. "And I don't know anybody who really enjoys doing this adjustment of their schedule twice a year."Opponents argued that even if California voters and the Legislature approve year-round daylight saving, the hurdle of getting the federal government to agree is too high given the state's tense relationship with Washington.RELATED CONTENT 1706

Lockdown has been been the way of life for many months at the Central Union Mission. No residents are allowed in or out, as part of an effort to keep COVID-19 out of this homeless shelter.“That was a difficult choice for us, but our goal from the beginning was to provide a safe place for homeless men to be fed, sheltered and be COVID-free,” said Joseph Mettimano, president of the Central Union Mission. “And so not allowing new folks come in, that was heartbreaking.”It was heartbreaking but effective.Since the start of the pandemic, there have been no cases of COVID-19 at the shelter. It’s a feat they weren’t sure would be possible at the start of the pandemic.“We started working on this process very early with the same countermeasures that everybody else was doing: handwashing, sanitizing hand railings, all those types of things,” Mettimano said. That also included regular health screenings for residents and staff, all of which combined to create a coronavirus-free zone.“I think we've gotten close. The guys that are here in the facility over the last six months and encouraging one another to try to follow the protocols that the mission has [in] place,” said Jonathan Moncado, a resident at the shelter. While the shelter lockdown hasn’t been ideal for him and the other 100 or so men there, Moncado said there is a sense the sacrifice has been worth it.“We just are thankful to the staff that they've kept us safe for all these months,” he said. “There hasn't been one confirmed case or any deaths.”The same can’t be said everywhere.Across the country, people who are homeless haven’t completely avoided COVID-19.The most recent numbers show 400 of the 12,000 people who are homeless in Seattle tested positive for the virus, with at least two deaths. COVID-19 has infected 1,300 of the 66,000 people who are homeless in Los Angeles, with more than 30 deaths. Meanwhile, in Phoenix, about 500 of the estimated 7,400 tested positive, with at least 9 deaths.Yet, the numbers available may not be the most accurate. COVID-19 testing for those who are homeless isn’t widespread. In addition, the recorded deaths from coronavirus often don’t list someone’s housing situation, all of which could be skewing the numbers.Back at the Central Union Mission, there’s an even more pressing situation: a change in the weather.“With winter coming, we want to make sure that we can do all we can to help folks to prevent them from getting hypothermia,” Mettimano said. “So, we're going to have some difficult decisions coming our way.”It is a potential for tough decisions that may need to be made in the face of a devastating pandemic and unforgiving mother nature. 2675

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former business manager of Stan Lee has been arrested on elder abuse charges involving the late comic book legend.Los Angeles police say Keya Morgan was taken into custody in Arizona early Saturday on an outstanding arrest warrant.Morgan was charged earlier this month with felony allegations of theft, embezzlement, forgery or fraud against an elder adult, and false imprisonment of an elder adult.Authorities say Morgan sought to manipulate and exert control over Lee even though he didn't have authority to act on Lee's behalf.Lee died in November at the age of 95.Attorney Alex Kessel has said Morgan has never abused or taken advantage of Lee. An email was sent Saturday to Morgan's attorneys.Bail has been set for 0,000. Morgan will eventually be extradited to Los Angeles. 811
